  • 02:14 He is an archaeologist who has been unearthing the artifacts and the relics
  • 02:18 of the first century and beyond
  • 02:21 and really bringing to light the life and reality of the Jewish presence in the Land.
  • 02:26 And so let's go to Shimon Gibson in Jerusalem.
  • 02:33 The name is Shimon Gibson.
  • 02:35 I'm an archaeologist who has been working in the Holy Land now for some 40 years
  • 02:39 which is quite a track record.
  • 02:42 I've been digging here since I was a teenager
  • 02:45 and in fact this excavation that I'm standing in at the moment
  • 02:48 was excavated in 1975 and I was brought along,
  • 02:53 I was only 12 or 13 at the time to make all the measurements,
  • 02:57 do the surveying within the site
  • 03:00 and subsequently I then became an archaeologist
  • 03:03 and today I'm digging here.
  • 03:05 But I have worked in different parts of Israel
  • 03:10 digging different sites in different periods
  • 03:12 and in the year 2000 I came across a remarkable cave west of Ein Karem,
  • 03:19 west of Jerusalem, the cave of John the Baptist.
  • 03:22 And that brought me to the whole subject of early Christianity
  • 03:27 and how developed the Jesus Group...
  • 03:29 Jesus and John the Baptist, all these other subjects.
  • 03:33 And these excavations were news in 2000
  • 03:38 and we've been digging here off and on for a couple of years
  • 03:42 but recently substantial excavations are now being undertaken here.
  • 03:47 And it turns out that there's a mansion here,
  • 03:49 a priestly mansion from the time of Jesus
  • 03:52 and its in the traditional area of the House of Caiaphas
  • 03:56 as we hear about it from the Gospels
  • 04:00 So this link between Jesus and Jerusalem
  • 04:04 is something which I've been interested in
  • 04:06 especially since the excavations which I'm working on for publication
  • 04:10 which are next to the Critorium, the place of the trial of Jesus.
  • 04:14 And also I wrote different publications,
  • 04:18 one with a colleague on the Temple Mount
  • 04:22 all the underground spaces,
  • 04:23 and another one on
  • 04:26 the Church of the Holy Sepulcher
  • 04:28 on the original topography and the archaeological remains below
  • 04:30 So I keep on coming back to Jesus in my archaeological researches.
  • 04:37 Now the "Dung Gate" is referred to originally in the book of Jeremiah
  • 04:42 but today it refers to the fact that this gate was the main access point
  • 04:49 for those who have come in and then take out the refuse, the rubbish, the garbage;
  • 04:54 all of the household stuff which was being discarded
  • 04:59 It was taken out of the city and then dumped.
  • 05:03 And this of course is wonderful for archaeologists.
  • 05:05 We love excavating fills with broken pottery and animal bones and so forth.
  • 05:13 And indeed just behind me here you can see this thick layer of soil.
  • 05:18 This is rubbish that was dumped here in the Byzantine period
  • 05:23 and it was not needed and it includes a lot of archaeological finds
  • 05:29 which can tell us about the ancient cultures that existed here through time.

  • 07:14 We're going to go take you now to the "Dung Gate"
  • 07:17 despite its different name its the only gate that leads directly to the Holy of Holies.
  • 07:24 So let's go learn more about the "Dung Gate"
  • 07:31 We're here at the "Dung Gate" which is in the southern part of the city.
  • 07:35 And its historically the place where the ash and the refuse
  • 07:38 would come out of the city towards the Valley of Hinnom and be deposited there.
  • 07:43 It's the southern most part of the old city.
  • 07:45 Behind me is the Western Wall
  • 07:47 and it is the holiest place for the Jewish people.
  • 07:50 It is the closet that they can get at this time to the Holy of Holies.
  • 07:54 That's right
  • 07:55 The Western Wall is the retaining wall
  • 07:57 that is built alongside where the Temple actually stood.
  • 08:01 It is the closest we can get to pray as if we were close to the Holy of Holies.
  • 08:08 Do you know the "Dung Gate" actually is a misnomer today
  • 08:11 because this is one of the cleanest areas in the City.
  • 08:14 And this is one of the places where you come in and out to get to the Western Wall.
  • 08:18 In 1948 the Jordanians had control of this
  • 08:21 but they opened it to traffic.
  • 08:23 And when the Israelis took it back in 1967
  • 08:26 you can see that there is still lots of life taking place here.
  • 08:29 You see many bar mitzvahs entering in through this gate.
  • 08:33 And it's the choice that we choose
  • 08:35 to stand with the pilgrims and the people of Israel
  • 08:38 to make clear the coming of the LORD.
  • 08:40 That's right
  • 08:42 When you are praying for this area pray for my Jewish people.
  • 08:45 Pray that we will have a revelation of our own God.
  • 08:48 That we'd get back into the scriptures,
  • 08:50 that we would be turned to the Book
  • 08:52 and that we would see Meshiach, we would be anticipating Messiah
  • 08:55 we will be looking for Him
  • 08:56 and that when He comes we will know Him.
  • 08:58 And even before then we will turn our hearts towards Him.
  • 09:01 As Zechariah has said, we will look to Him whom we've pierced
  • 09:05 and mourn as if for an only son.
  • 09:06 So pray for my Jewish people will you?
  • 09:41 In 586 the Babylonian captivity took place.
  • 09:44 We're here inside the "Dung Gate"
  • 09:46 which it was rebuilt by Nehemiah back in those days.
  • 09:49 When Nehemiah returned to rebuild the gates all the tribes worked together.
  • 09:54 There was resistance
  • 09:55 but it's a picture for us of the body working together.
  • 09:59 In Nehemiah 2:13 we hear about the rebuilt gate, the "Dung Gate"
  • 10:03 In Nehemiah 3:14 we hear specifically about this gate, the "Dung Gate"
  • 10:07 being really built under Nehemiah
  • 10:10 We're inside the Western Wall area.
  • 10:13 Right near here is the Western Wall, the holiest site in Judaism.
  • 10:17 It is the place that is closest to the Holy of Holies
  • 10:21 and therefore is revered.
  • 10:23 It's the place where people come and pray.
  • 10:25 It's where the bar mitzvahs take place on Mondays and Thursdays.
  • 10:28 It's a significant place in all of Judaism.
  • 10:31 And then also for Christian believers
  • 10:33 they come to support Israel from here.
  • 10:35 We're near the Southern Steps.
  • 10:37 We're near the City of David.
  • 10:38 The Pool of Siloam which was just rediscovered
  • 10:42 and uncovered in the last few years
  • 10:44 played this tremendous part in the Feast of Tabernacles.
  • 10:47 This area is almost a ground central,
  • 10:50 it's a very important area.
  • 10:52 The "Dung Gate" surprisingly is one of the cleanest areas in Jerusalem.
  • 10:57 This city is broken up.
  • 10:59 The Old City is broken up into four uneven quarters.
  • 11:02 The smallest quarter is given to the Jewish people.
  • 11:05 You know Psalm 122 says
  • 11:08 (Speaking Hebrew)
  • 11:12 Our feet shall stand within your gates, O Jerusalem!
  • 11:16 And that's what we're seeing today.
  • 11:18 The Jewish people are back.
  • 11:19 Our feet are standing within the gates.
  • 11:21 And now surprisingly and unexpectedly
  • 11:25 Christians are coming along side the Jewish people to support them.
  • 11:29 You know during the Six Day War this area was recaptured by the Jewish people
  • 11:33 after it had been under Jordanian rule from 1948 forward.
  • 11:37 When the army came through here,
  • 11:39 when the IDF came through
  • 11:41 3 different companies were going through this area and going to the Western Wall celebrating.
  • 11:46 And in the celebration the Jordanians were able to flee through this "Dung Gate".
  • 11:52 Shocking but true that during that time of celebration the Jordanians got away.
  • 11:58 And so be it.
  • 11:59 But today this area is under Israeli control, Israeli rule,
  • 12:04 and it sets up for the future when the 12 Gates will be seen in the New Jerusalem.

  • 14:11 You know we have with us next, Marty Waldman
  • 14:13 He's the Rabbi at Baruch HaShem Messianic Congregation
  • 14:17 And he is also one of the Executive Directors for the "Towards Jerusalem Council II"
  • 14:23 We first became aware of that, I don't know, maybe 15 years ago
  • 14:26 A long time ago we realized
  • 14:27 that there was a group of Messianic Jews and Evangelicals
  • 14:31 and Catholics, and Presbyterians and every kind of Christian.
  • 14:35 They were traveling the world together and seeking reconciliation
  • 14:39 by kind of "bookending" Acts 15.
  • 14:42 Remember in Acts 15 the great doctrinal decision was
  • 14:46 Do the Gentiles need to become Jewish to follow Jesus?
  • 14:49 The answer was "no"
  • 14:51 Thank God.
  • 14:52 Now at the end of the age the question is
  • 14:53 Do Jews become Gentiles when they follow Jesus?
  • 14:56 No!
  • 14:57 The answer is again "no".
  • 14:59 "Towards Jerusalem Council II" is promoting that reality
  • 15:03 that in fact we can work together,
  • 15:05 have a shared destiny while maintaining our distinctives.
  • 15:09 And so Marty is one of the leaders of that
  • 15:11 He took time away from his busy schedule to speak to us.
  • 15:13 Let's hear from Mary Waldman now.
  • 15:17 Today we are witnessing a prophetic phenomenon.
  • 15:22 That is we're witnessing the restoration
  • 15:25 of the Messianic Jewish community of the 1st century.
  • 15:29 Most people don't even know about this movement
  • 15:33 but there are two major miracles that have happened in my lifetime,
  • 15:37 many more, but two I would like to share with you.
  • 15:40 The first major miracle took place in 1948 when the people of Israel
  • 15:46 who had returned to the land of Israel,
  • 15:50 became the nation of Israel and received statehood.
  • 15:55 Now statehood is simply a reference to geopolitical entity
  • 15:58 but nonetheless it was recognized by the United Nations,
  • 16:02 by the world, the world community of nations
  • 16:05 that Israel would be a nation.
  • 16:08 And Ben Gurion who was the father of the nation at that time
  • 16:12 didn't say hallelujah, we've become a state;
  • 16:15 he said, thank you oh God
  • 16:17 for returning your people to our homeland and giving our home back to us.
  • 16:24 So the nation of Israel which is called "the Jewish State"
  • 16:28 is really our homeland to be considered above and beyond the actual geopolitical nationstate
  • 16:37 that so many people have issues with.
  • 16:40 That's the first miracle.
  • 16:42 The second miracle which is not as well known is the return of the Messianic Jews.
  • 16:49 That is the people of Israel that have returned to the Messiah of Israel.
  • 16:55 And I'm one among those people
  • 16:57 There are now a growing number of Jewish people who have trusted in the LORD
  • 17:05 by accepting Yeshua, or Jesus, as our Messiah,
  • 17:10 the Messiah that God promised to our people
  • 17:12 the Messiah that God promised to the Nation of Israel.
  • 17:17 And so we believe that that promised Messiah is Yeshua.
  • 17:22 That was his real Hebrew name.
  • 17:24 His name is known more commonly as Jesus.
  • 17:29 But know that we are here I don't want to sound arrogant
  • 17:33 but it's like we're back from the first century.
  • 17:35 It's a miracle.
  • 17:37 And it didn't take place via any committees in the church that said
  • 17:41 we need to reach the Jewish people and form a Messianic community.
  • 17:44 It was strictly the miracle of God, the power of God, the presence of God
  • 17:49 that has called us back into existence and into being.
  • 17:53 And because the Messianic Jewish community has returned
  • 17:57 the now worldwide church including every flow of the church
  • 18:02 from ancient churches, eastern orthodox, catholic
  • 18:06 all the way up to protestant and modern charismatic churches
  • 18:11 are now confronted with a reality.
  • 18:14 That reality is the Messianic Jewish community.
  • 18:18 Oh... the Jews are here
  • 18:19 and they want to stand up as Jews who believe in Jesus
  • 18:23 and proclaim our Jewish identity in the Messiah.
  • 18:27 And the church is saying,
  • 18:28 what do we do with them?
  • 18:31 So this is similar to the 1st century.
  • 18:33 So many Gentiles were coming to faith in Jesus, the Jewish Messiah
  • 18:37 the Jews had to decide whether or not these Gentiles needed to be
  • 18:41 converted to Judaism or to Jewish Messianic faith by circumcision.
  • 18:45 And the decision was "no".
  • 18:49 The decision of the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15 was let's be gracious, let's give grace.
  • 18:56 This seems to be good to the Holy Spirit and to us
  • 18:58 and they sent the letter accordingly.
  • 19:00 Now what we're dealing with
  • 19:02 and it sounds bizarre
  • 19:04 but the real question is
  • 19:05 when Jews come to faith in Jesus
  • 19:08 do we have to become uncircumcised?
  • 19:12 I know that physically that's probably impossible.
  • 19:15 but in a spiritual sense and in the sense of the community of believers
  • 19:20 that question has arisen.
  • 19:23 And so "Towards Jerusalem Council" is addressing
  • 19:26 that very ancient wound between Jews and Gentiles
  • 19:30 and the unity that was attacked and destroyed between Jews and Gentiles in the Body
  • 19:36 that we are now addressing and hoping
  • 19:40 that through our obedience to the LORD following this vision
  • 19:44 that God will once again restore the unity
  • 19:47 that the Apostle Paul describes in Ephesians Chapters 2 and 3 and also in Romans Chapter 11
  • 19:55 with the olive tree unity that is described there.
  • 19:58 So the miracles that we're seeing today are actually
  • 20:01 akin to the miracles that we're seeing in the 1st century
  • 20:06 I personally am extremely excited about this
  • 20:09 because I believe that one of the reasons
  • 20:11 that the Messianic Jewish community has been resurrected from the 1st century
  • 20:15 is because we are proclaiming the nearness of the coming of our Messiah Yeshua.
  • 20:24 Very exciting.

  • 24:20 that's taking place through the Messianic movement
  • 24:22 It's very encouraging to us.
  • 24:23 We've been on this trail for awhile.
  • 24:25 And you know it's not an ecumenical movement
  • 24:27 like you would see false ideologies coming together
  • 24:31 to agree upon that which is not agreeable.
  • 24:35 Unity for the sake of unity.
  • 24:36 Exactly, this is something else.
  • 24:38 It has to do with healing.
  • 24:40 It has to do with repentance and healing.
  • 24:41 In fact, we've seen that as well
  • 24:44 where Pastors will awaken to their ignorance of the Jewish part of the Gospel
  • 24:48 their ignorance of the Jewish identity of Jesus
  • 24:52 and how they've allowed us and embraced us.
  • 24:54 And we've been working for years along this trail.
  • 24:57 I remember when we first started going to Israel.
  • 24:59 Well and the rebirth of Israel is the key
  • 25:03 because it shows people that God is keeping His covenants with Israel and His people
  • 25:10 and that they're not replaced
  • 25:11 and the Church did not replace the Jewish people.
  • 25:14 There's something more that God is wanting to do
  • 25:16 that He's doing already in our midst.
  • 25:18 I know one of our signature scriptures is Ephesians 2.
  • 25:20 Right...He's broken down the middle wall of partition
  • 25:23 that which has caused us to have separation.
  • 25:26 And He's made us both one.
  • 25:28 Yes, we're prophetically linked
  • 25:30 but there's a distinctive between Jews and Gentiles
  • 25:32 and we get to keep that.
  • 25:34 And so it has been an incredible journey to see how God is doing that.
  • 25:37 Romans 9 through 11 speaks about all Israel being saved
  • 25:40 walks through that amazing picture of the olive tree
  • 25:44 and how the Gentiles are grafted in to the commonwealth of Israel.
  • 25:48 And really we're seeing that.
  • 25:49 We are seeing that in California
  • 25:50 We're seeing that around the world.
  • 25:52 There's this awakening taking place that's really...
  • 25:54 you can sense the coming of the LORD based on that.
  • 25:57 I love how you always said you didn't have to repent from being a Jewish
  • 26:00 but you repented from your sin.
  • 26:03 But God is restoring the Jewish people and their identity in their Messiah Yeshua.
  • 26:09 And it's growing
  • 26:10 It's growing every day.
  • 26:12 One of our works is in Napa, California known for its fine wine.
  • 26:15 Well there's new wine there.
  • 26:17 And the new wine is this understanding of the shared destiny of Jews and Christians
  • 26:22 coming together in Messiah.
  • 26:24 We had a woman come to our congregation.
  • 26:26 She said I have been waiting my whole life for this,
  • 26:29 I was raised Jewish but as a young girl I always wanted to know about this Jesus,
  • 26:34 and I felt like it was a forbidden thing.
  • 26:36 But she knew that Jesus was her Messiah.
  • 26:39 And so coming to our congregation she said,
  • 26:42 It's like a dream come true,
  • 26:44 you're answering the questions that I've had all my life
  • 26:47 that can I still be a Jewish person and believe in Jesus.
  • 26:52 That's what I love about this Gate Series.
  • 26:53 We're going to be going through each gate
  • 26:55 and as we do it's going to open up a wealth of information and understanding
