Episode: “Mission and Messengers”

In this program, we take a retrospective look at over 40 years of television ministry. What began with our founder, Zola Levitt, did not stop when he was called home in 2006. The ministry’s mission continues to this day, albeit with different faces. It is time to see the messengers who will not only continue the mission but take us into the future.

00:36 Jeffrey Seif: I am Jeffrey Seif.
00:37 Kirsten: And you just saw some footage from way back.
00:40 That was really fun.
00:41 It was some bass playing and funky music.
00:44 Jeffrey: Yesteryears.
00:46 Yeah, that was a little while ago, wasn't it?
00:48 David: We were all teenagers back then.
00:49 Right? A long time ago.
00:51 Forty years ago. Wow.
00:53 Jeffrey: Well, we're going to take a trip down
00:54 memory lane today.
00:55 Huh?
00:57 Kirsten: You weren't there when Zola started.
00:58 Were you--you weren't in the black and white days.
01:00 Jeffrey: No, no, no.
01:01 But I came in, you know, in the next season.
01:04 Kirsten: And it started in the '80s.
01:05 I mean, my gosh that's 40 something years ago.
01:09 Jeffrey: Most television programs don't last 4 seasons
01:12 never mind 40 years, and it lasts because people have gotten
01:17 behind us through all time and circumstance, you know, because
01:21 they like to see the good news through the eyes of the Jews.
01:26 They appreciated the messengers, but particularly the message.
01:30 Kirsten: And that as has been since the beginning so it will
01:33 be in the future as long as we air,
01:36 and we've been a weekly program.
01:38 Ken Berg--our producer Ken Berg has been doing this weekly
01:42 since, I believe, 1983.
01:44 Early '80s.
01:46 Jeffrey: Yeah.
01:47 Again, he's been--he really is in so many ways--I mean, the
01:50 Lord's the wind behind the sails, but he's been the sail
01:54 that the wind is kind of--to catch the wind
01:56 to kind of move it forward.
01:57 It's hard to, you know, overstate Ken's contribution.
02:02 David: I don't think he even had a chance back in the day to
02:04 see that we can watch this program on our phones now.
02:09 My--how times have changed, but the mission is still the same.
02:13 Correct?
02:14 Kirsten: As we'll talk about times changing, I want to jump
02:16 back a little bit and you can see some of the history of what
02:21 started out as "Zola Levitt Live," which became
02:24 "Zola Levitt Presents."
02:25 Let's take a look to the past right now.
02:30 Zola Levitt: Naturally I'm concerned about Israel.
02:32 The Middle East is a powder keg, and my homeland
02:35 is in the middle of it.
02:38 In Israel, the Wailing Wall serves as the place
02:41 for the Jew to pour out his spirit.
02:44 In fulfillment to prophecy, the Jews are once again able
02:47 to pray together as a nation.
02:50 Scattered about the world by wars and political unrest,
02:54 they've become a modern-day miracle proudly returning
02:58 in hope of peace.
02:59 male: Our little country has had enough war.
03:02 We've suffered terribly.
03:03 Our people have suffered.
03:07 All we want is peace.
03:11 Zola: When the Antichrist reveals himself to the world, it
03:14 will be the nation of Israel that needs him most.
03:18 The prophets tell us that he'll make a peace treaty with Israel,
03:21 guaranteeing peace throughout the land.
03:24 No nation will want to make war with him.
03:27 Zola: Well, there's the bedside table
03:29 of a bride of ancient Israel.
03:31 She would have had her veil and her oil lamp ready to leave at
03:35 midnight when the thief in the night came for her,
03:37 her bridegroom.
03:39 We're going to talk tonight about the feast of trumpets, and
03:42 that feast, of course, is when the king will come
03:44 for his bride the church.
03:47 And we've been doing a series of the seven feasts of Israel.
03:50 We're up to trumpets now.
03:51 We've done Passover and unleavened bread,
03:54 first fruits and Pentecost.
03:56 And so tonight is trumpets, and of course the trumpet of the
04:00 Bible is the ram's horn.
04:02 That's what I have here, is the horn of a ram.
04:04 And this was blown like a trumpet, and it sounds like a
04:07 trumpet when blown by somebody that can do it.
04:12 Benjamin Netanyahu: Today, the principal battle against
04:14 Israel is not the battle of bullets or even the battle of
04:18 bombs, although we have plenty of those
04:20 being launched against us.
04:22 The principal method applied by the enemies of the Jewish people
04:26 and of Zionism and of the Jewish state is slander and is lies.
04:32 That's what they do.
04:33 They've conducted a terrific campaign to reverse to--stamp
04:38 things on their head.
04:39 It is not the Arabs who attack the Jews but the Jews
04:41 who attack the Arabs.
04:43 It is not they who attacked us from Judea and Samaria and we
04:46 who defended ourselves and gain reentry into these territories
04:51 as a process, but we who sought out to attack them
04:54 in the first place.
04:56 Zola: Well, our location is Caesarea on the Mediterranean
04:59 coast of Israel where a number of civilizations established a
05:04 place to--for a harbor, a city, a trading post, and finally
05:10 castles like the one behind me fortified by the crusaders for
05:15 their adventures here in the holy land.
05:18 And our subject is peace, something being talked about day
05:23 after day, year after year, decade after decade in our time.
05:26 Peace in the holy land, Scripture indicates
05:29 that it's hard to come by.
05:31 1 Thessalonians 5, for example, "When they shall say peace and
05:36 safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail
05:40 upon a woman with child."
05:42 Zola: I mentioned Campus Crusade earlier.
05:44 They really were responsible for my salvation.
05:47 They used to tell a story of, you know, when you're driving
05:50 along the road, and it's for everybody, you see a hitchhiker.
05:56 Most people ignore the hitchhiker.
05:58 Some people see that it's Jesus.
06:00 He's standing by the road.
06:03 They pass him by.
06:05 So another group thinks he's interesting looking man or that
06:10 is Jesus Christ or--my goodness, "I'd love to meet him."
06:13 And they pull over and they--he gets in the car, and then they
06:19 drive and they talk to him and they listen to him.
06:22 Maybe they're saved. Still not the best way.
06:27 Best way is pull over, get out, let him drive, and then you go
06:32 straight to the kingdom.
06:33 Sandra Levitt: You know, I knew as a child I wanted to go
06:36 to Israel and I knew I would go one time,
06:39 and I am approaching my 30th trip to Israel.
06:43 God has blessed me in ways that only you know.
06:47 And I read the Bible and I--I'm from Texas and--you know, so I'm
06:52 thinking Israel is huge, and it's not.
06:55 It's this little piece of land; but everywhere you go there is
06:59 something that says Messiah was here, Messiah lived here,
07:03 Messiah walked here, Messiah talked here and taught.
07:07 Zola: You know, back in the '80s I had
07:09 a bypass operation. It's ironic.
07:12 I had a bypass operation this past year or two
07:14 and now lung cancer.
07:16 Had a tough year.
07:18 But when that first one happened I started to get real chest pain
07:23 afterward and that was pretty scary, and I thought, "Well,
07:29 didn't work out and it's not going to work out."
07:33 And thought I would go to heaven right then, and by the way this
07:38 faith sustains you through anything.
07:41 It was fine with me to go to heaven, and I was ready then.
07:46 And I sat at the piano one night and I wrote a song called
07:49 "Father, I'm Coming Home."
07:53 And it's really kind of emotional, but it's 25 years
07:58 later I suppose.
07:59 It's still a good song.
08:01 People still listen to it.
08:03 Let me play it for you now.

08:47 Sandra: As you know, Zola went on to be with the Lord
08:49 April the 19th.
08:50 He prepared us also.
08:52 I think God prepares us every single day of our lives to do
08:56 what he wants us to do.
08:58 I'm here with Dr. Jeffrey Seif today.
09:00 I thank you for coming and talking with us.
09:03 Jeffrey: It's a pleasure to be here albeit under trying
09:06 circumstances for everyone.
09:08 Sandra: You know, we were talking before we got going.
09:10 People love to hear how Jewish people were saved.
09:13 How were you saved?
09:14 Tell me how that all worked.
09:16 Jeffrey: It was during the early '70s initially when I had
09:19 made a decision.
09:20 Some fellow with long hair came up and started
09:22 talking to me about Jesus.
09:24 And I was into getting high and, you know, rebelling and, you
09:28 know, girls and rock and roll and all the rest, but I was
09:30 really very empty inside.
09:32 And he really pressed me and I made a decision for the Lord.
09:35 But then I went on for a while and backslid away from it all
09:38 and Jews for Jesus
09:39 really picked me up off the pavement.
09:41 You know, I'm 25, 26.
09:42 I was living in the YMCA in urban Chicago.
09:46 I'd never gone to college.
09:47 I flunked out of high school, and I was attending a--
09:49 Sandra: A Jewish guy flunking out of high school?
09:52 How can that happen?
09:53 Jeffrey: I wasn't in really good shape and--
09:55 you know, this Dr. Seif.
09:57 But for the grace of God, the God's honest truth I went
10:00 to--when I felt the call of God in my life, and I received it
10:03 when I was participating in the Jews for Jesus ministry in
10:06 Chicago, truth be known--when I went to go to Bible college,
10:11 they took me in on academic probation because
10:13 my grades were so bad.
10:14 They were all Ds and Fs and everything.
10:16 But what happened is the Lord called me and I got into
10:19 a--rolled up my sleeves and just had a love for the Word and the
10:22 love for the ministry, and I felt called and I pursued it and
10:25 wound up finishing with a masters and a doctorate at
10:27 Southern Methodist University here.
10:29 I'm just glad the Lord called me into the ministry.
10:32 Jeffrey: What a pleasure it is to be here in the holy land
10:34 to tell the greatest story ever told.
10:39 We're going to go back in time to the 8th century BC and look
10:45 at the greatest prophet in the Old Testament.
10:49 We're going to put a number of questions to the text.
10:52 We want to know did this prophet speak about the Mashiach,
10:56 about the Messiah.
10:58 Jeffrey: I want you to hear me for a second.
11:01 We live in precarious times, and I'm not just speaking about
11:07 world culture and individual nation states.
11:10 The world is a very precarious place and various nations are in
11:15 the throes of despair in so many ways.
11:17 When I think of household units that are basic building blocks
11:22 of any society--just like these pillars here are holding up this
11:25 house, so too the family is a basic building block.
11:28 The family is being assailed.
11:30 There are challenges today.
11:32 Well, who is or isn't president isn't as important, what social
11:36 programs are on the table isn't as important.
11:39 What's important is that we like David rise up with faith because
11:44 I believe that faith can and will pay dividends; faith in
11:49 Jesus, Israel's Messiah.
11:53 Jeffrey: We've spent some time looking at yesterday.
11:58 I don't know about you.
12:00 I have photo albums all over my house.
12:03 I like to look back at yesteryear to see
12:07 the way we were.
12:09 The reason why we're doing it here, however,
12:12 is a little different.
12:15 It's not just a case of nostalgia.
12:17 I wanted to look back at the past because I want to look
12:22 forward to the future.
12:25 I think all of us should be concerned with the future
12:27 because we're all going to spend the rest of our time in it, and
12:31 I hope you won't think the less of me for saying that after 10
12:36 years as the principal teacher in this ministry I am opting out
12:44 of the future to a certain extent to take much more of a
12:48 backseat in different ways as a consultant and the like.
12:52 But I want to here now introduce you to the future.
12:57 As we open up here a little bit, you'll see some
12:59 new faces on this set.
13:01 And with Joshua and Caleb I don't just want you to like
13:06 them, I want you to love them.
13:10 Great people, younger people, good heart, good head with the
13:16 names Joshua and Caleb.
13:18 These aren't stage names, by the way.
13:20 They come by way of mom and dad.
13:22 And inasmuch as Joshua and Caleb looked into the Promised Land
13:25 and carved out a path for the future; well, Joshua and Caleb
13:30 are leading us into a new generation as well.
13:33 So glad that you're here, guys.
13:35 Caleb Colson: Thank you, Jeff.
13:36 I appreciate it.
13:37 Joshua Colson: We're so honored to be here, Jeff.
13:39 Jeffrey: Yeah. It's like wow, you know.
13:40 It's--I've been following you behind the scenes for years.
13:44 Caleb: We've been sitting at your feet for 10 years listening
13:47 and soaking up your wisdom.
13:48 It's been awesome.
13:50 It's been amazing.
13:51 Jeffrey: You've got a lot going for you independent of me,
13:53 and you've been on screen too.
13:54 Some friends might recognize you in the Paul series.
13:56 You played Paul.
13:58 And you've been around too on a number of occasions.
14:01 Joshua: I got to play Samson.
14:02 I mean, if you had to choose Paul or Samson, I think he got
14:04 the better character.
14:06 But it was fun.
14:07 Jeffrey: You got the better build for Samson.
14:09 He's better with Paul.
14:11 But never mind the externals, the internals.
14:14 You guys, you love looking at the good news through the eyes
14:17 of the Jews and you have a real heart for that, and tell us what
14:21 you're all about please.
14:24 Joshua: We are honored to be here.
14:26 You know, it was funny the opening of this show we got to
14:28 see that episode from 1983, and I actually
14:30 lamented that as a child.
14:32 I missed it because I was at the hospital
14:33 while he was being born.
14:34 So it was good to finally get to see that episode.
14:36 We got to grow up watching Zola.
14:39 We are blessed that we were raised in a Jewish family that
14:43 believed in Messiah Yeshua from the very beginning.
14:46 So we didn't have to go through transitions that you see other
14:49 individuals go through in that process
14:50 of learning later in life.
14:53 And so our entire lives we were raised to believe in him.
14:56 Our godparents, who are like our grandparents, were missionaries
14:58 and so our heart from the beginning has been get out into
15:01 the mission field and share the good news of Yeshua.
15:04 Jeffrey: You guys have been blowing it up on social media,
15:07 haven't you, with the Bible brothers.
15:09 Caleb: Yeah.
15:11 That was an idea--our producer Ken Berg 5 years ago he said he
15:14 wanted to get us in front of the camera just because he knew our
15:17 heart for "The Jewish Roots," and we love
15:19 to just dig into the Word.
15:21 So he came up with the "Bearded Bible Brothers,"
15:24 and we just we go--
15:25 Jeffrey: He came up with that?
15:27 Caleb: Everybody--we kind of came together.
15:28 He said, you know, "Where do you want to--you know, where's your
15:31 heart for this?"
15:32 We said, "No one knows the Word anymore.
15:34 No one really digs into the Word of God."
15:36 And we wanted to make sure that people had that same hunger and
15:39 thirst that we did for the Word, and so we wanted to make it fun.
15:42 We're used to, you know, joking around and having fun.
15:45 And actually as kids when we were growing up, we would make
15:48 short films and videos for our youth group--for our youth
15:51 pastor to show before his message.
15:53 And so it was kind of--already God had prepared us, you know,
15:57 to just joke around and have fun.
15:58 And we're used to being behind the camera, but this is
16:00 more of a, you know, in-front-of-the-camera
16:02 situation.
16:03 Jeffrey: Okay. We're talking about change.
16:05 Let's talk about what's consistent.
16:08 The same vision looking at the good news through
16:10 the eyes of the Jews.
16:11 Correct?
16:13 Now, you'll be on camera in Israel going to the same land.
16:16 You'll be opening up a Bible or going to the same book.
16:20 Difference is, is that--I'm kind of like the eccentric professor.
16:24 We need to open up the windows and let some fresh air blow.
16:27 Welcome to the fresh air with your energies.
16:31 We're hoping that--and praying, believing that we'll not only
16:36 carry on in helping to educate the folk that have been with us,
16:40 but we want to find new friends in the younger generation.
16:43 Yes?
16:44 Joshua: I think it's too easy to overlook the concept
16:46 that--for generations of mentoring of looking to wisdom
16:50 and sitting under wisdom for years to be able to prepare
16:53 yourself for then it to be your turn.
16:55 And we've been blessed to be able to sit under you, to sit
16:58 under Zola for all these years.
16:59 And the time comes because the Father dictates it, but it's
17:03 only to share the same message that he shared
17:05 through everyone else before us.
17:06 And so that's why we're on here.
17:08 Jeffrey: And to that point, people need to sit under you
17:10 that can relate to you.
17:11 Younger people look at me as grandfatherly like.
17:15 You're young enough to be a mentor, you know, and old enough
17:19 to have something to say.
17:22 Caleb: Well, we want to--that's really where our
17:23 heart is, to reach the younger audience.
17:26 We know we already have the older audience.
17:28 We know they're going to be behind the ministry no matter
17:30 what, but we kind of have an ADD younger generation.
17:33 They're used to their phones.
17:34 They don't even tune in to the TV anymore.
17:36 They're used to social media.
17:38 And we have kids in that age and we know--how can we reach those
17:41 kids and--that flip through after they're watching 30
17:44 seconds at a time.
17:46 It has to grab them immediately.
17:48 You know, we have to--but it's still the anointing
17:51 that breaks the yoke of bondage.
17:52 It's still the presence of God that has to pull them in and
17:55 that's only if we're obedient to the message; and that's why
17:58 we're going to maintain that message of the Jewish roots, of
18:00 the Christian faith, preaching about prophecy.
18:03 Yeshua is coming soon, and it's all centered around Israel.
18:06 Our hearts still for Israel and the Jewish people, and we're
18:08 going to be preaching that message to the Jew first but
18:10 also to the Gentile.
18:12 Jeffrey: Okay.
18:13 Well, one question before we pivot out of this segment.
18:16 Do you think you can get used to these two?
18:19 Kirsten: To look at these two,
18:20 they're like my boys, my boys.
18:22 You guys are--yeah, I'll take the mama, the Ima.
18:24 I'm Ima.
18:25 David: I'm feeling the passion from these guys.
18:27 I'm so excited.
18:29 We've learned so much from you, and we're going to continue that
18:32 learning from you guys.
18:33 We're the students, and I--we know you have so much to share
18:37 with all of the viewers and with us.
18:40 Kirsten: Two new voices, same vision, same heartbeat.
18:43 We will continue on, and we love you.
18:48 Jeffrey: You're sweet.
18:49 Kirsten: I like when you said--talked about the grandpa.
18:50 I'll call you grandpa.

18:58 Myles Weiss: It's so wonderful to see so many
19:00 believers around the world--Gentile believers
19:02 beginning to start to understand the Jewishness of the feast and
19:06 their relationship to their Hebrew roots,
19:07 and Zola was a forerunner.
19:09 Sandra: He was one of a kind.
19:11 I will--he and Moishe.
19:13 You know, I read one of the obituaries when Moishe died, and
19:16 it said the two great men are gone and I thought that was a
19:19 real testimony to both of them.
19:21 Just--they did.
19:23 They both thought they were the only Jewish people
19:25 in the entire world.
19:27 Myles: And they affected--I think every Jewish believer
19:29 that's alive today has been touched by Zola and Moishe.
19:33 Sandra: God is--you know, we're talking about seasons.
19:35 You know, God raises up people for a season.
19:38 It's just some people have a little longer season
19:40 than others.
19:42 Myles: Just as the story began with exile from Bethlehem,
19:45 here we are back in Bethlehem near Manger Square in the
19:49 Shepherds' Field where the story began and where the story will
19:52 unfold when Yeshua will be born some years later.
19:57 What an incredible time. We're here.
19:59 It's a windy day, and I feel the wind of the spirit blowing
20:02 through the Middle East today in spite offenses,
20:05 in spite of the difficulty politically.
20:07 We see that the story of Ruth is the story for the future, for
20:11 all believers Jew and Gentile alike.
20:13 Eitan Shishkoff: The waters of the Haifa Bay are really a
20:15 perfect backdrop for the story of two kings in the Bible who
20:20 demonstrate the amazing relationship to which God has
20:24 called us as Jews and Gentiles.
20:27 When I discovered this story, I was really quite astounded to
20:32 find the degree of cooperation that existed between King
20:36 Solomon and King Hiram.
20:39 As a matter of fact, it was right along this bay.
20:42 These waters are where Hiram brought cedar trees from Lebanon
20:46 all the way to Jerusalem to help build the temple.
20:50 Dov Schwarz: In Romans 11 and Ephesians 2, we see the Gentiles
20:55 who believe in Messiah Jesus are grafted in to many of the
20:59 covenant promises given to Israel and become, in Ephesians
21:04 2, part of the commonwealth of Israel.
21:07 That's the new covenant.
21:09 It's made with the Jewish people and with any Gentile in the
21:13 world who will put their faith in the lamb of God, Messiah
21:18 Yeshua and he will be grafted into their promises.
21:24 Jeffrey: It's tragic sin made its entrance onto the stage of
21:27 that drama, and they were kicked out of Eden
21:30 and they made their way east.
21:33 When we walk through the biblical text not long after, we
21:37 one into--we run into an individual named Avraham who
21:41 feels an urge, a beckoning to make his way back to this land,
21:47 Eretz Kna'an, the land of Canaan.
21:50 Could it be that this land of promise, this land that's the
21:55 holy land, this land where God would make his name to dwell,
22:01 could this be that special place where God dwelt and walked among
22:05 men in the beginning of the biblical drama?
22:09 The answer is yes.
22:13 Jeffrey: But it's important the miracle that is you.
22:16 I want you to know that because he lives and if he lives in you,
22:22 if the Ruach Elohim, if the Spirit of God is in you and
22:26 dwells in you, that the prospects for your life
22:29 are immeasurable.
22:30 It's not even a question of where he found you initially or
22:33 where you find yourself right now, but there's great prospects
22:37 for the future for someone that can take choshech,
22:40 darkness, and bring forth life.
22:43 That's the Genesis story at the beginning of the older
22:46 testament, and that's the story here in the beginning of the
22:48 new; that God is in the miracle business, and he transforms
22:52 people like me and like you.
22:56 ♪♪♪
23:06 David: Kirsten and I have had such an amazing time at this
23:09 table for the last 5 years with you, Dr. Seif.
23:13 It's over for us at this table, but I think you're still going
23:15 to be seen for a little bit.
23:17 Correct?
23:18 Jeffrey: I've been in and around this ministry for years
23:20 and years, and like a bad dream I probably am not
23:23 going to go away entirely.
23:25 Kirsten: I think it's a good dream.
23:26 Jeffrey: Yeah.
23:28 And frankly, by the way, beyond just the professional banter
23:31 I've just come to enjoy you personally quite frankly.
23:35 I'm at a stage in my life I really only want to work with
23:37 friends and with Ken Berg and the crew and these guys.
23:41 I've known them for years, and I've gotten to know you recently
23:43 and you guys are just the best.
23:45 Kirsten: Well, thank you.
23:47 It's family, and you both have been family
23:50 with this ministry for years.
23:52 People are just starting to see you now on camera and--
23:56 but you've been doing "Bearded Bible Brothers."
23:58 People have seen you.
23:59 I just want you both to know as a person that edits the Levitt
24:03 Letter and Personal Letter people love you.
24:07 So welcome to this side of the camera.
24:09 You've been there, and you're going to be around.
24:11 I think you have a new title.
24:13 Right? Is it a theological consultant?
24:16 Those are big words.
24:18 Jeffrey: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:19 Well, you know, I'm always around if these guys ever want
24:21 to pick up a phone and--for the ministry as well.
24:25 You know, I am an academic to be sure.
24:28 In fact, I'm leaving here and, you know, I'm working on a PhD
24:32 at Cambridge University.
24:33 It'll be my third doctorate.
24:35 Guys like me can live in different worlds.
24:38 And these guys are no dummies, but you want the energy and the
24:43 enthusiasm that you don't necessarily get with an older
24:47 kind of eccentric philosopher kind of guy.
24:50 And so I look forward to the imprint that these guys are
24:56 going to make in the younger generation.
24:59 And by the way, everyone who's watching, if you have any
25:04 maturity under your belt you know at the end of the day
25:06 people at my age with these hearing aids, people at my age
