  • 00:10 Kirsten Hart: Welcome to "Our Jewish Roots."
  • 00:12 Today's program is gonna be a little different in its format,
  • 00:16 and I just might say you look a little different in your look
  • 00:19 today, usually have your jacket on.
  • 00:21 Look at you.
  • 00:22 David Hart: I'm just gonna say that I'm honored to wear this
  • 00:25 shirt with Caleb and Joshua.
  • 00:27 Did I get that right?
  • 00:28 Kirsten: Who's who?
  • 00:29 Joshua Colson: I'm glad you asked, I'm the old one.
  • 00:31 David: Yes, the Bearded Bible Brothers, you're at the table
  • 00:34 today, we're glad you guys are here.
  • 00:35 A lot to talk about today.
  • 00:37 Caleb Colson: Yes, we do.
  • 00:38 Joshua: I'll tell you, it's human nature for us to wanna
  • 00:40 earn things, you know.
  • 00:41 Kirsten: To earn this t-shirt.
  • 00:43 Joshua: Earn this t-shirt, like, Dave worked hard to earn
  • 00:44 that t-shirt, trust me on that one.
  • 00:46 But we want earn it, and so today, what we wanna talk about
  • 00:50 is how salvation is a free gift.
  • 00:52 It's not anything that you can earn, it is something that the
  • 00:54 Father has freely given to you.
  • 00:56 That's what love is.
  • 00:58 That's how a father should love.
  • 01:00 So, we want you to join us right now and learn more about
  • 01:02 this topic.
  • 01:07 Joshua: Ha-ha, nicely done.
  • 01:09 You know, I have a nemesis.
  • 01:13 Caleb: A nemesis?
  • 01:15 Joshua: That's right, a nemesis, someone who I am in constant
  • 01:19 opposition with in life, they just don't know it.
  • 01:22 Mine is...
  • 01:24 That's right, this particular person loves correcting my
  • 01:28 grammar, is type A.
  • 01:31 I am the furthest letter from A in the types.
  • 01:35 This person my entire life has been my nemesis.
  • 01:37 Do you have a nemesis, brother?
  • 01:39 Caleb: Let me think about that.
  • 01:41 The IRS, the HOA, MSG, pretty much any three letter
  • 01:46 acronym probably.
  • 01:48 That and toy Poodles.
  • 01:49 Joshua: How could MSG be a nemesis?
  • 01:51 It's so delicious and keeps you wanting more.
  • 01:53 Caleb: You know, in the Bible, come to think of it, Yeshua was
  • 01:57 the nemesis of the Pharisees because the Pharisees represent
  • 02:00 the law.
  • 02:02 Yeshua loved, Pharisees were under the spirit of legalism.
  • 02:05 Joshua: Legalism is a gnarly thing.
  • 02:07 Let's be honest with you, have you ever wondered why when you
  • 02:10 set a law or a rule for your kids, or someone else's kids,
  • 02:14 which I don't know why you would do that, but what's the first
  • 02:16 thing they do?
  • 02:17 I'll tell you, I used to be a camp counselor.
  • 02:19 I would put a nice tray of brownies that I made on the
  • 02:20 table, and I said now, whatever you do, don't eat
  • 02:23 these brownies.
  • 02:24 I couldn't get three feet to my left, these children were
  • 02:27 munching on my brownies.
  • 02:28 Caleb: Well, because legalism operates in areas of the flesh.
  • 02:32 If you tell someone not to do it, something, they want to do
  • 02:34 it because legalism is trying to achieve righteousness with a set
  • 02:37 of rules that God did not implement.
  • 02:40 Joshua: Romans actually says in Romans 7:7, "I would have not
  • 02:43 known sin except through the law.
  • 02:46 I would not have known covetousness unless the law had
  • 02:48 said, 'You shall not covet.'"
  • 02:50 It's so funny that mankind wanted law, they wanted a king,
  • 02:54 they wanted a system of rules.
  • 02:56 It wasn't until that system of rules was put in place that we
  • 02:58 asked for that we knew how to be jealous and how to have all
  • 03:04 these issues.
  • 03:05 Caleb: That's right, and Paul the problem with the Galatian
  • 03:06 church, that they were trying--they were a Gentile
  • 03:09 church that was trying to use the law to obtain righteousness.
  • 03:12 He said, "O foolish Galatians!
  • 03:14 Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before
  • 03:16 whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you
  • 03:19 as crucified?
  • 03:20 This only I want to learn from you, did you receive the Spirit
  • 03:23 by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
  • 03:26 Are you so foolish?
  • 03:28 Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by
  • 03:31 the flesh?
  • 03:32 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse,
  • 03:35 for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who does not continue
  • 03:38 in all the things which are written in the books of the law,
  • 03:40 to do them.'"
  • 03:42 What does that mean?
  • 03:43 Joshua: Legalism is a very slippery slope, okay?
  • 03:45 Because what it does is it says I can achieve something through
  • 03:49 my ability and my works.
  • 03:50 And if you'll look in the Bible, everything that the Word says
  • 03:54 shows how it was freely given through the acts of Yeshua.
  • 03:59 So, anytime we delve into this mentality of legalism, or doing
  • 04:04 something, or achieving something through works, not
  • 04:06 only are we stepping out in pride, because we're saying
  • 04:09 we're capable of doing that, which we're not capable of doing
  • 04:11 anything without the love of Yeshua, but we're also taking
  • 04:15 our focus off of the love, which was the intent of his gifts, and
  • 04:18 we're placing it on tiny details and minutia that he didn't
  • 04:22 intend for you and I to focus on.
  • 04:23 Caleb: And the Pharisees didn't love the people, and you can
  • 04:25 feel that someone loves you.
  • 04:26 Instead, they were wagging their fingers saying do this, do that,
  • 04:30 and they were being harsh, and Yeshua came with love and it
  • 04:33 changed everybody's hearts.
  • 04:35 And so, we see in the church today that, you know, people are
  • 04:39 trying works of the flesh, this carnal nature of a set of rules
  • 04:42 to get people to participate, to come to church, they're trying
  • 04:45 programs, and psychology, and eloquent speaking, and all these
  • 04:49 different ways of the flesh to keep people in through these
  • 04:52 programs, and they've forgotten to let God do his work, to
  • 04:55 function by the Spirit, to function by faith, to function
  • 04:59 by discernment, to function by that supernatural power that's
  • 05:02 sort of been removed in the church now.
  • 05:03 Joshua: We love you guys, we love the church, alright?
  • 05:05 We're not attacking anyone, we're not saying that any of
  • 05:08 your programs are no good, or this or that, we love
  • 05:10 your programs, I love programs--
  • 05:11 What we're saying is make sure that the intent of your heart is
  • 05:14 where Yeshua paid for it to be.
  • 05:16 Make sure that you have a heart of love towards others.
  • 05:19 Make sure that what is inside of you, that that gift of salvation
  • 05:23 is birthed out of the same love that paid the price for you to
  • 05:26 have it to begin with.
  • 05:28 That's all we're asking you guys to do today is to stop for a
  • 05:30 minute, put your own works aside, and let everything that
  • 05:35 comes to you be through his gift and his love.
  • 05:37 Caleb: That's right, and I'm gonna end with this story.
  • 05:39 Jesus was the greatest storyteller.
  • 05:41 He would make great movies.
  • 05:42 In Luke 18, Yeshua said two men went up to the temple to pray,
  • 05:46 one a Pharisee, one a tax collector.
  • 05:50 So, the Pharisee went up to the front of the temple, he prayed
  • 05:53 boldly, Thank you, God, I'm not like any of these other men.
  • 05:56 They're unjust, they're extortioners, they're
  • 05:59 adulterers, and I'm not like this tax collector here, burn.
  • 06:03 Joshua: Awkward.
  • 06:04 Caleb: He says I give a tenth of everything that I own, and I
  • 06:07 fast twice a week, but that tax collector, he stood in the back.
  • 06:11 He couldn't even look to heaven.
  • 06:13 He just--his head was sullen, sunken down, he beat at his
  • 06:16 chest, and he said, "Lord, have mercy on me, I'm a sinner."
  • 06:21 Yeshua said that tax collector went home justified, not the
  • 06:25 Pharisee, because whoever humbles himself will be exalted,
  • 06:29 but whoever exalts himself will be humbled.
  • 06:33 Joshua: Humble yourself at the sight of the Lord.
  • 06:34 That's what it says.
  • 06:36 All of us, every one of us has sinned and fallen short of the
  • 06:38 glory of God.
  • 06:39 Don't try to put yourself some place that you can't earn.
  • 06:41 He paid the price for you.
  • 06:43 It's a free gift, share it with others.
  • 06:44 Caleb: We love you. Join us next time.
  • 06:46 Joshua: I love him.
  • 06:48 He still hates touching, but that's why I do it so much.
  • 06:53 David: We are bringing you clips from our social media with the
  • 06:56 Bearded Bible Brothers, but we want you to know that we will
  • 06:59 always be "Our Jewish Roots."
  • 07:01 Kirsten: We are, and we will always obey the law.
  • 07:05 You're talking about legalism.
  • 07:09 Oh, I've got to say, and I'm not trying to throw you under the
  • 07:12 bus, but as a couple, there's always one that drives a little
  • 07:15 faster, and then there's one that I'm like, what is the speed
  • 07:19 limit, and I'll try to stay right there, right?
  • 07:22 Legalism is excessive obedience to law, correct?
  • 07:26 Did I listen right?
  • 07:27 Caleb: It's not only excessive obedience, it gets to a point
  • 07:29 where you are making your own laws instead of following
  • 07:32 God's laws.
  • 07:34 You're holding a higher standard for man than even God himself,
  • 07:37 and that's what the Jews were doing back then.
  • 07:39 It's a difficult concept for the church today, even for
  • 07:42 Messianic believers.
  • 07:43 They come out of the law, out of Judaism, and everything's free,
  • 07:47 this free gift, but then they're like, do I still keep kosher?
  • 07:51 Do I still follow the feasts?
  • 07:52 And that kind of weighs down on them, you know, where do I fit
  • 07:55 in all this as being a believer in Messiah?
  • 07:57 And legalism can set in if your--that desire to still try
  • 08:01 to earn things, because it is human nature, it honestly is.
  • 08:03 Joshua: Well, it's dangerous because of pride.
  • 08:05 If you can earn it, you can control it.
  • 08:09 We like the pride of saying I control my destiny and future, I
  • 08:12 earned that.
  • 08:13 Look what I sacrificed to be able to get my salvation.
  • 08:15 I know what Yeshua did, but I added this big part as well.
  • 08:19 But if we can control it, then it's because of us, it's no
  • 08:23 longer because of Yeshua.
  • 08:24 Caleb: That's right, now we're gonna switch gears on this
  • 08:27 subject and take it from a different perspective when we
  • 08:29 discuss in our next teaching the rich man and Lazarus.
  • 08:33 You're not gonna wanna miss this.
  • 08:37 Joshua: Hey, everybody, I'm Joshua.
  • 08:38 Caleb: And I'm Caleb.
  • 08:39 Joshua: We are brothers.
  • 08:41 Caleb: That's true, how many of you used to attend Sunday School
  • 08:44 as children?
  • 08:45 Joshua: Pick me?
  • 08:47 Caleb: You did?
  • 08:48 Okay, well, do you remember the flannelgraph?
  • 08:50 Joshua: Oh, it was the coolest thing ever.
  • 08:51 They took this material that only existed in the '80s and
  • 08:53 stuck it on top of each other and they told us about
  • 08:55 the Bible.
  • 08:56 Caleb: That's felt, Josh, it still exists now.
  • 08:59 Joshua: Am I older than flannelgraph?
  • 09:01 Caleb: Not by much, but it made the Bible come to life.
  • 09:04 You have these bright colors that illustrated Bible stories,
  • 09:06 and as a kid, man, that really got into your head.
  • 09:09 We looked everywhere for a modern day flannelgraph, didn't
  • 09:12 we, Josh?
  • 09:13 Joshua: And everyone laughed at us, just like that.
  • 09:15 No one knew what we were talking about.
  • 09:17 Caleb: So, we have decided ourselves to illustrate this
  • 09:20 Bible story today of a rich man and Lazarus.
  • 09:22 I will illustrate, and Joshua will narrate.
  • 09:25 Joshua: Thank you.
  • 09:27 Everyone, please join around the fire and turn to Luke 16:19-31,
  • 09:33 and please don't start a fire in your living room, it was just
  • 09:35 a metaphor.
  • 09:37 Joshua: Luke 16:19-31, "There was a certain rich man who was
  • 09:42 clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.
  • 09:47 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores,
  • 09:51 who laid at his gate desiring to be fed with the crumbs which
  • 09:54 fell from the rich man's table.
  • 09:56 Moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores.
  • 10:01 So it was that the beggar died and was carried by the angels to
  • 10:07 Abraham's bosom.
  • 10:10 Now the rich man also died and was buried.
  • 10:15 And being in torment in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw
  • 10:19 Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
  • 10:23 Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me and
  • 10:28 send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and
  • 10:32 cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.'
  • 10:37 But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you
  • 10:41 received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things,
  • 10:46 but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
  • 10:49 And besides all this, between us and you is a great gulf fixed,
  • 10:55 so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can
  • 11:00 those from there pass to us.'
  • 11:03 Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you
  • 11:07 would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers,
  • 11:11 that he may testify to them lest they also come to this place
  • 11:15 of torment.'
  • 11:17 Abraham said to him, 'They may have Moses, the prophets, let
  • 11:21 them hear them.'
  • 11:23 He said, 'No, Father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the
  • 11:27 dead they will repent.'
  • 11:29 But he said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets,
  • 11:34 neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'"
  • 11:40 Joshua: Whoo, that's a story.
  • 11:42 Caleb: It is pretty interesting.
  • 11:44 So, many of you are asking what is Abraham's bosom?
  • 11:47 Well, scripturally, Abraham's bosom, paradise, they're all the
  • 11:50 same thing.
  • 11:51 Before Yeshua's sacrifice and his resurrection, when people
  • 11:54 who believed on God, the saints, died, they went to a place of
  • 11:57 paradise, a place of consolation.
  • 11:59 Wicked people went to hell.
  • 12:01 And there was a great chasm, as you saw, between the two
  • 12:04 of them.
  • 12:05 Now, when Yeshua died he went to Abraham's bosom and he preached
  • 12:08 to the saints that were there that he was the Messiah.
  • 12:10 He was the fulfillment of the prophets.
  • 12:12 He also went to hell.
  • 12:13 He preached to those that were in bondage to hell so they would
  • 12:16 know the truth also, and he placed all the enemy, every
  • 12:19 demon, under subjection to his feet.
  • 12:20 Everybody saw this as an open display, so that when Yeshua was
  • 12:24 resurrected, all the saints in Abraham's bosom believed and
  • 12:27 they came out of their graves, as it says in Matthew 27, and
  • 12:30 went to Jerusalem.
  • 12:31 Joshua: Now guys, this is a story that is really for all
  • 12:34 people, but in context, Yeshua is actually preaching to the
  • 12:37 Jews at that exact moment.
  • 12:38 The rich man was self-sufficient.
  • 12:40 He was awesome.
  • 12:41 He was living his best life with his best posts on social media,
  • 12:45 and he had everything that he needed, but Lazarus was
  • 12:48 exactly opposite.
  • 12:49 He had nothing.
  • 12:50 He was desperate, he needed food, he needed health, he
  • 12:53 needed all forms of provision, and because of that, he turned
  • 12:55 to God as his source.
  • 12:57 Caleb: Yeah, he made it into paradise but the rich man
  • 12:59 did not.
  • 13:00 Joshua: Did not, and we see that as this was a result that today
  • 13:08 we face the same issue here in America.
  • 13:12 We see people who mentally assent, I believe that the
  • 13:15 message of Yeshua is right, I believe that everything that the
  • 13:18 Bible says is true, but because we have our backup plans,
  • 13:21 because we're self-sufficient, because we always know that we
  • 13:24 don't really have to rely on him, we see less action from our
  • 13:28 belief and just more hyperbole.
  • 13:31 Caleb: That's true, the Jewish people, they missed Messiah.
  • 13:35 They said even if you see a resurrection, a man come back to
  • 13:38 life, you still won't believe.
  • 13:39 Well, they saw this.
  • 13:41 Yeshua came back and they still didn't believe upon him because
  • 13:43 they were looking for some physical way of earning that
  • 13:46 salvation, and people are still doing that today.
  • 13:48 They're still trying to find a workspace system in which they
  • 13:51 can receive salvation, but even like Josh said, in America we
  • 13:54 have this mental sin society where we don't really need
  • 13:57 anything, do we?
  • 13:58 We're self-sufficient. We're like the rich man.
  • 14:00 And there's not very many desperate people like Lazarus in
  • 14:02 America, even though there are, that are just desperate for God
  • 14:07 to redeem them and to save them.
  • 14:09 Joshua: I've had the opportunity to travel all over the world,
  • 14:10 almost 40 countries now, and I've seen so many miraculous
  • 14:14 things happen in so many impoverished places.
  • 14:16 And when you go to these other countries where you see that
  • 14:19 they have dirt, death, disease, and you tell them that Yeshua
  • 14:23 loves them, that he died for them, that he bore their
  • 14:25 sickness and infirmities, they have no other option but to
  • 14:28 believe, and you see true belief happen, which true belief
  • 14:31 requires action, and they act on that word, and they grab it, and
  • 14:34 they take it to heart, and they see the miraculous happen
  • 14:37 because they have yield their consent to Yeshua, as opposed to
  • 14:42 holding on to control.
  • 14:44 Caleb: So, we need to be like that in America today.
  • 14:46 We need to put our belief to action and we need to be
  • 14:48 desperate for God instead of looking at ourselves as a
  • 14:51 provision, our job gives us money, our doctors give us
  • 14:55 health, our 401K gives us, you know, income for when we
  • 15:00 get older.
  • 15:02 We need to look at God desperately thinking, no, God, I
  • 15:04 need you for everything, to feed my family.
  • 15:06 I need you to heal us.
  • 15:07 I need you to give us life.
  • 15:09 When we return to that sense of desperation on the Lord, then
  • 15:12 we're gonna see amazing things in our lives.
  • 15:14 We're gonna see revival.
  • 15:16 We're gonna see breakthroughs.
  • 15:17 We're gonna see a great awakening, because the Lord will
  • 15:19 work through us.
  • 15:20 Joshua: All these things are fantastic provision, but we're
  • 15:22 not looking to them for our source, we're looking to
  • 15:24 the Father.
  • 15:25 Caleb: And join us next time, thank you.
  • 15:31 We have an audience.
  • 15:33 Joshua: Greatest stick beard ever.
  • 15:37 Kirsten: I listened to your teaching, we listened to your
  • 15:39 teaching, Mr. Bearded Bible Brothers Shirt listened, but
  • 15:45 we're church babies.
  • 15:46 When we hear the name Lazarus, we think it's the Lazarus come
  • 15:51 forth that Jesus called out.
  • 15:52 Not what you're teaching about.
  • 15:54 Completely different, right?
  • 15:55 Caleb: Different story, yes, that Yeshua was giving.
  • 15:57 It is a parable, you know, it didn't actually happen, but
  • 16:01 there was an important meaning to all that.
  • 16:02 There's nothing really wrong with doing good works, but we're
  • 16:06 never enough.
  • 16:07 We're never gonna be enough.
  • 16:08 We're never gonna be enough to provide for our family.
  • 16:10 Never gonna be enough to be righteous.
  • 16:12 Never gonna be enough to proclaim Yeshua's words unless
  • 16:17 his Spirit flows within us.
  • 16:20 It's a free gift that God has given us and we can't earn it,
  • 16:24 we're not worthy of it, but that's the whole point.
  • 16:26 If we were worthy of it, then we would be God, wouldn't we?
  • 16:28 And we don't wanna take on that role of being God.
  • 16:31 He's the only one worthy.
  • 16:32 Joshua: Before everybody gets angry, Romans 3:10 backs this up
  • 16:34 with Scripture, saying, "As it is written, 'There is none
  • 16:37 righteous, no, not one.'"
  • 16:38 So, the hyper focus is not you're a terrible, horrible
  • 16:41 person, it's saying you are dependent on the Father, and
  • 16:44 that dependency is a perfect place to be in, because his
  • 16:47 all-powerful love for you, not just power, his powerful love
  • 16:51 for you, is more than enough.
  • 16:53 Powerful love desires all the best things for its children,
  • 16:56 and that's why you know you're safe.
  • 16:58 So, we are about to talk about a different system, the system of
  • 17:02 rewards based versus love.
  • 17:04 What's the difference and which one's better?
  • 17:10 Joshua: Hey, everybody, I'm Joshua.
  • 17:12 Caleb: And I'm Caleb.
  • 17:13 Joshua: And that guy right there is my brother.
  • 17:16 Caleb: That's true.
  • 17:17 Joshua: You know, Caleb, I have found that one of the easiest
  • 17:20 ways to commit to something, to do it right, is to ensure that
  • 17:26 you will get a reward at the end if you do what's good.
  • 17:29 Caleb: Okay, explain.
  • 17:30 Joshua: I'll explain.
  • 17:31 I have been into health, and fitness, and nutrition for over
  • 17:34 20 years.
  • 17:35 Working out in the gym, eating on very specific diets to get
  • 17:38 specific body goals, and so, when I would start a new diet
  • 17:41 program, I had to give myself a period of time where I was
  • 17:44 eating super strict, okay?
  • 17:46 So, let's say I went for 30 days without one single mistake of
  • 17:48 my diet.
  • 17:50 Well, on that 31st day, because I was so good, I decided to
  • 17:54 reward myself with what is called a cheat day.
  • 17:57 Now, people have changed that to refeed day and other things, but
  • 18:00 basically on that day, I'd let myself have any of the things
  • 18:02 that I wanted that I didn't get beforehand.
  • 18:07 Caleb: Like the donut.
  • 18:08 Joshua: Like the donut on my cheat day right now.
  • 18:09 Caleb: Oh, that's very good.
  • 18:11 Joshua: Well, here was the problem, okay?
  • 18:13 So, I got in a good habit for 30 days, and then I calculated
  • 18:17 out my day to get every single thing I wanted,
  • 18:18 from like, 5:00 a.m. until, like,
  • 18:20 literally every restaurant closed, and it
  • 18:22 usually equaled out to about 20,000 calories and at least a
  • 18:24 couple hundred dollars worth of food.
  • 18:26 Well, by the next day, I was addicted to sugar again, deep
  • 18:30 fried foods, I had so many calories in my system that I was
  • 18:33 sick and couldn't go to the gym, and I usually fell off the wagon
  • 18:36 and was back into eating bad again.
  • 18:38 So, when you give yourself, thank you, get that out of here,
  • 18:42 a reward every time you do something good, and the reward
  • 18:45 is the opposite of it, it doesn't really make a lot
  • 18:47 of sense.
  • 18:48 Caleb: I wanna talk the science behind this.
  • 18:50 Joshua: Ooh, you wanna go science, okay.
  • 18:51 Caleb: So, back in the 1950's, there was two guys, James Olds
  • 18:55 and Peter Milner, and they implanted electrodes into the
  • 18:59 brains of rats.
  • 19:01 So, they set up these little rat-sized levers, and when the
  • 19:04 rat would press the lever, they would get a mild electrical
  • 19:07 stimulant to their brain.
  • 19:09 So, they started moving around, you know, those electrodes, and
  • 19:12 they started figuring out that the area under the front end of
  • 19:16 the corpus callosum was a pleasurable experience to get
  • 19:19 the electrical shock.
  • 19:20 So, the rats were pressing it, pressing it.
  • 19:22 One rat, Josh, hit it 7,500 times in the span of 12 hours.
  • 19:26 Joshua: I'm that rat.
  • 19:27 Caleb: That's called a junkie rat.
  • 19:28 Joshua: That's why my diets didn't work.
  • 19:30 I hit it 7,500 times in 12 hours.
  • 19:31 Caleb: It's because they received an electrical response,
  • 19:36 a neurotransmitter called dopamine when they pressed that.
  • 19:39 Basically, guys, scientists discovered reward learning.
  • 19:43 So, association happens.
  • 19:46 Let's say for example, alcohol.
  • 19:47 The first time you try alcohol, if it is a pleasurable
  • 19:50 experience, you have this stimulus, this reward, then
  • 19:54 every time you see alcohol, think about alcohol, it's going
  • 19:57 to release that dopamine, you know, that reward system
  • 20:00 is activated.
  • 20:01 It can also work in reverse, negative effects to
  • 20:04 negative people.
  • 20:06 Scientists propose that dopamine allows for the learning of new
  • 20:09 associations between stimulus and pleasure, and is involved in
  • 20:12 the acquisition of new habits dedicated to obtaining the
  • 20:15 rewarding stimulus again in the future.
  • 20:17 In the case of addictive drugs though, these habits can become
  • 20:20 especially persistent, generating patterns of
  • 20:23 compulsive behavior that persist long after the value of the
  • 20:26 reward has diminished.
  • 20:28 Joshua: Now, we're not saying that all rewards are evil, what
  • 20:30 we're saying is that we know how the brain is wired, how humans
  • 20:34 work, and so does the enemy.
  • 20:35 So, if Satan knows how we're wired, he knows that he can use
  • 20:39 that reward system to try to enslave us, to get us caught up
  • 20:42 in addiction.
  • 20:43 Caleb: In drugs, alcohol, pornography, all these things,
  • 20:47 because we like the dopamine release.
  • 20:48 I mean, it's different for different people, is it not?
  • 20:52 But John 3:16, obviously, "For God so loved the world that He
  • 20:57 gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should
  • 20:59 not perish but have everlasting life."
  • 21:02 God loves us, it's that simple.
  • 21:04 We didn't earn it.
  • 21:06 So, y'all heard the Scripture, why is it important that Satan
  • 21:10 uses the reward learning?
  • 21:11 It's because it is an act that you have to perform to receive
  • 21:15 something good, and so it works in our perception and how we
  • 21:19 view our heavenly Father.
  • 21:21 We think if we do something good, we should get rewarded.
  • 21:24 We think we need to earn salvation, but there's nothing
  • 21:28 we can do to receive salvation, it's a free gift.
  • 21:31 But you notice that every other, let's say religion, every
  • 21:36 religion throughout history, you have to earn your salvation,
  • 21:38 whether it's Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism, you have to be
  • 21:45 christened, you have to pay penance, you have to do
  • 21:47 these acts.
  • 21:49 Even Jews in the past, in Judaism, they understood the act
  • 21:52 of sacrifice that you had to perform in order to receive
  • 21:56 your forgiveness.
  • 21:57 Modern Jews, they can't sacrifice animals anymore, Josh,
  • 22:00 they honestly can't.
  • 22:02 So, during the fall seasons of Rosh Hashanah, they believe that
  • 22:05 the books of life are made empty, they're cleared, and you
  • 22:09 have a ten-day window period called the Ten Days of Awe until
  • 22:11 you get to Yom Kippur, which you have to afflict your souls and
  • 22:16 really perform penance in order to get your names written in the
  • 22:18 book of Life again.
  • 22:20 It's very stressful to Jews.
  • 22:22 Joshua: Ooh, that's a tough time.
  • 22:23 Caleb: It's still an act that you have to do.
  • 22:25 Joshua: And also, he wanted you to know that if there was
  • 22:27 something that you could work for to get salvation, then you
  • 22:30 could possibly earn it, and then one individual could earn and
  • 22:33 deserve salvation more than another, and that was another
  • 22:36 reason for why that it was not a reward for your works, it was a
  • 22:39 free gift that was given to you, because every person, every
  • 22:44 person had to accept Yeshua and just believe, not work to
  • 22:47 get it.
  • 22:48 Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
  • 22:50 God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
  • 22:53 Gift, our sin equal death because of Adam.
  • 22:55 Caleb: That's true, but God's gift was free.
  • 22:57 It wasn't God, he's trying to be mean, take away our fun,
  • 23:00 he just gave us a free gift.
  • 23:02 Joshua: Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved
  • 23:04 through faith, and not that of yourselves.
  • 23:07 It is a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone
  • 23:09 should boast."
  • 23:10 Caleb: So, we really need to rewire our brains, our way of
  • 23:13 thinking, because we have received faulty data from the
  • 23:16 god of this world, Satan, and how he wants us to act and
  • 23:19 think, and when we think the way he thinks, then we don't have
  • 23:23 that free gift, that we have to receive a salvation.
  • 23:27 We can't receive our healing, we can't receive the miracles and
  • 23:31 all the promises and the provisions that God has given us
  • 23:33 because we're still trying to earn it.
  • 23:35 Joshua: Begin to shift your mindset.
  • 23:37 Even as a parent, as a spouse, whatever your relationships with
  • 23:41 others are, begin to change your mindset to where you are not
  • 23:45 including fear as the reason for doing or not doing something.
  • 23:49 Begin to shift your teaching and how you are an example to others
  • 23:53 through doing things purposed out of love and desire, purposed
  • 23:56 for the right reasons.
  • 23:58 Encourage your kids, look, we wanna do what's right because it
  • 24:01 honors God.
  • 24:02 You want to obey me because I'm your father and I love you and
  • 24:04 you want to honor that love.
  • 24:06 And as we begin to shift that, then sin doesn't have this hold
  • 24:08 on us.
  • 24:10 Then this reward system where we are or are not good enough based
  • 24:13 on us, then we don't fall every time we slip, you know, because
  • 24:16 we pick ourselves back up.
  • 24:18 And instead of living in shame and in condemnation, those of
  • 24:20 you who have had a cheat day and then immediately went back off
  • 24:23 your diet, you know why you did?
  • 24:24 You said, oh, my goodness, I can't believe this, I just ate
  • 24:27 one thing that was terrible.
  • 24:28 I might as well eat the rest of the week this way.
  • 24:30 I might as well do this. That's how that works.
  • 24:32 The enemy uses that to enslave you, telling you you're not good
  • 24:35 enough, you can't, no matter how hard you try, get your goal or
  • 24:39 earn his love.
  • 24:41 And that's why we don't want to live in that system, we want you
  • 24:43 guys to know that you are loved, that God gave his Son for you
  • 24:48 because he loves you, no other reason.
  • 24:51 And all you have to do is accept it, it's a free gift.
  • 24:53 Caleb: And we love you guys and we thank you for watching.
  • 24:56 Please join us next time.
  • 24:58 Joshua: Hey, guys, I did good on that episode, can I finish
  • 24:59 that donut?
  • 25:01 Caleb: Yeah, yeah, why not? He earned it?
  • 25:05 David: I am a father, I am a grandfather, and guys, I have a
  • 25:08 little confession to make.
  • 25:10 I probably shouldn't say it because of what you're teaching,
  • 25:12 but I've used money, I've dangled money as a reward for my
  • 25:16 children before.
  • 25:17 Kirsten: I gotta say just last week our little ones went to
  • 25:20 soccer camp, or whatever, and Dave was like, I'll take you to
  • 25:23 the Dollar Store if you do everything, and we did, we did.
  • 25:26 So, we're guilty of that.
  • 25:27 Caleb: We all are, we're all learning, we're all growing, it
  • 25:29 is true.
  • 25:31 Joshua: It is true.
  • 25:32 Now, this topic that we've been discussing today, it all boils
  • 25:35 down to one simple concept, accepting a free gift.
  • 25:39 I think we fear accepting a free gift because we feel like
  • 25:42 there's strings attached if we accept it, we have less control
  • 25:45 if we accept it, but even in general as human beings, we try
  • 25:48 to overcomplicate the gospel.
  • 25:51 The gospel is a very detailed, complicated thing, but it was
  • 25:54 made as simple as a child can understand.
  • 25:56 And we too often forget that the Father doesn't want you to have
  • 26:00 to wonder about how you get saved, to be in question of his
  • 26:03 love and when the other shoe might drop of his anger and
  • 26:05 his wrath.
  • 26:07 He wants you to accept that his love for you comes strings free,
  • 26:10 the price has been paid, and even if you get a dollar to go,
  • 26:13 you know, do well in soccer, he was gonna love you if he didn't
  • 26:16 give you the dollar.
  • 26:18 David: They got $2.
  • 26:19 Caleb: You're the grand pappy.
  • 26:21 Kirsten: And I agree, salvation is the free gift.
  • 26:25 We want to give you the free gift of this program.
  • 26:28 Unfortunately, it costs us a lot of money to get this out to you
  • 26:32 on television stations throughout the world.
  • 26:35 Please give to this program so we can give people the good
  • 26:41 news, especially through the eyes of the Jews.
