Caption transcript for “Olive Branches”

  • 00:01 Why are 2 Gentiles the new Studio Host of Zola Levitt Presents?
  • 00:05 How did that happen?
  • 00:07 Stay tuned and find out.
  • 00:14 Brethren, My heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel
  • 00:18 is that they might be saved,
  • 00:21 for there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek,
  • 00:24 for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.
  • 00:38 Welcome to Zola Levitt Presents.
  • 00:39 I'm Kirsten Hart.
  • 00:41 And I am David Hart
  • 00:42 Today's a special day.
  • 00:43 We have the Producer and the Director of
  • 00:46 Zola Levitt Presents,
  • 00:47 Ken Berg, with us today.
  • 00:49 This is probably the first time in a while
  • 00:52 you've been sitting in front of the camera.
  • 00:54 You're usually behind the camera.
  • 00:55 It's the first time in fact.
  • 00:57 I have interviewed people before on camera
  • 00:59 but I really much prefer being behind the camera,
  • 01:03 not in front of the camera.
  • 01:04 Well, you look good on camera - welcome.
  • 01:06 Thank you, thank you, welcome to you both.
  • 01:08 Thank you for being new members of our team as you are.
  • 01:11 You've come in and done one little series so far.
  • 01:14 You did well.
  • 01:16 And I know each program is going to get even better.
  • 01:17 Thank you.
  • 01:19 We're loving the new series coming up too - it's great.
  • 01:21 Yeah, it will be.
  • 01:23 We're going to have some repeats for a while,
  • 01:24 which we'll introduce.
  • 01:26 Then we're going to get into a brand new series.
  • 01:29 And looking forward to that.
  • 01:30 We are too.
  • 01:31 You met Zola in the 70's?
  • 01:35 In the 70's.
  • 01:36 I was but a child.
  • 01:38 I even have notes in front of me cause
  • 01:40 how do you remember 38 years of highlights
  • 01:44 just within the few minutes that we have?
  • 01:46 How did you meet him?
  • 01:47 WOW - You know it started back in 1978
  • 01:50 when I had written a little script,
  • 01:53 a little movie script,
  • 01:54 very low budget, shoe string project
  • 01:57 that I called "Wonder Man".
  • 01:58 It was based on the anti-Christ
  • 02:00 and the end times and so forth.
  • 02:02 And I was wondering who could really be on camera to host this program.
  • 02:05 And at the time I had been listening to Zola Levitt on radio.
  • 02:08 He had a daily radio show called..
  • 02:11 Out of Dallas?
  • 02:12 Out of Dallas called "The Heart of the Matter"
  • 02:14 The "Heart" - [Hart]
  • 02:16 And I was so taken by his ability to
  • 02:18 speak to extemporaneous issues,
  • 02:20 to speak to vital issues.
  • 02:22 People would call in and he would have answers just like that.
  • 02:24 And I said, this guy is so great I'd love to meet him one day.
  • 02:26 So I called him and said, Zola, I've written this script.
  • 02:29 Would you be the on-camera person for this?
  • 02:32 He said, Sure!
  • 02:34 Had he ever done TV before?
  • 02:37 He'd never done TV before.
  • 02:38 So he was just a radio man.
  • 02:39 No, no no.
  • 02:41 All this is a "God Thing", it really is as the story goes along.
  • 02:44 And so in one day, just a couple of hours,
  • 02:48 he knocked it out really well.
  • 02:50 And we got to know each >>other pretty well during >>the course of that filming.
  • 02:53 It was literally "film", 16 mm film at the time...
  • 02:57 before video tape.
  • 02:58 Soon thereafter in the course of doing that
  • 03:01 that Channel 39 came to him at about that same time
  • 03:05 and said, Zola, we have a one hour slot for a Christmas Special.
  • 03:10 Would you like to be the host on this one hour TV Special?
  • 03:14 And Zola came to me and said, Ken Channel 39...
  • 03:18 the CBN network station at that time.
  • 03:21 said, They've come to me. Would you like to produce this program?
  • 03:24 I said, Why not? We had a great time with the WONDER MAN,
  • 03:26 why not do this?
  • 03:28 And we did.
  • 03:29 We had a great time.
  • 03:30 I even had Zola up on a rooftop putting up a star on top of his chimney
  • 03:33 to the tune of "Fiddler on the Roof".
  • 03:35 So that kind of launched our video time together.
  • 03:41 It went very well.
  • 03:44 And soon thereafter Zola came to me and said,
  • 03:46 Well you know, that went so well, why don't we try this on a weekly basis?
  • 03:50 And I've got to give all the credit to Zola
  • 03:52 cause out of his own pocket he had to take the money, the funding
  • 03:55 to get us rolling on the weekly program.
  • 03:58 And it was soon thereafter,
  • 04:01 after we had been on the air
  • 04:03 maybe a couple months I think,
  • 04:04 CBN Network came to us and said, We like what you're doing.
  • 04:07 Kirsten - Out of Virginia Beach.
  • 04:09 Out of Virginia Beach.
  • 04:09 It was national.
  • 04:11 They said, we'd like to air your program on our network.
  • 04:14 So that's in fact how we started it.
  • 04:17 The national following to this day
  • 04:19 has been very important to us.
  • 04:21 And some of the viewers can even remember those early days.
  • 04:24 I hear from them occasionally,
  • 04:26 saying, I remember when we started with Zola way back when.
  • 04:28 Was there any other program out at that time doing what Zola did?
  • 04:32 Not certainly in the way that we did it.
  • 04:34 I think we were one of the first
  • 04:36 where we would bring the Messianic teachings,
  • 04:38 the Jewish roots of Christianity
  • 04:41 and address it in a different way.
  • 04:43 We would take Zola out on location
  • 04:46 and put him in Biblical robes.
  • 04:48 Nobody else was doing.
  • 04:49 And He looked great with the beard.
  • 04:51 And he was a musician.
  • 04:53 And he loved music.
  • 04:54 He was so proud of his music.
  • 04:56 He'd write a new song...
  • 04:57 Ken, I wrote this new song - what do you think of it?
  • 04:59 I'd always say it was great and eventually
  • 05:01 it would wind up being on the program.
  • 05:03 Any idea how many songs?
  • 05:04 Oh - hundreds, hundreds.
  • 05:06 And to this day people enjoy
  • 05:08 listening to his music.
  • 05:09 We love it.
  • 05:10 We do.
  • 05:11 At this formative years I have to point this out
  • 05:13 that Dr. Thomas McCall, a Christian Gentile,
  • 05:19 was very important to the beginning of the ministry.
  • 05:23 And I bring this up because
  • 05:25 you being Christians and Gentiles
  • 05:27 some people would say,
  • 05:28 What's this all about?
  • 05:30 Jewish and Gentile?
  • 05:32 Well it was formative at these early years.
  • 05:34 It was very important then.
  • 05:36 And it remains important to this day.
  • 05:38 Dr. Thomas McCall helped Zola write many of his books.
  • 05:40 He went on location with us to Israel.
  • 05:43 And we really did have a great time together.
  • 05:47 We did musicals.
  • 05:49 "Beloved Thief" and others.
  • 05:50 And this carried on for 25 years.
  • 05:53 It was a remarkable run that I cherish to this day.
  • 05:57 David- We've loved watching some of
  • 05:59 his videos of his teaching.
  • 06:01 And we're just so sad that we didn't get to meet him
  • 06:04 before he passed in 2006 I believe
  • 06:06 from cancer - is that correct?
  • 06:08 Yes, I believe that was the year.
  • 06:09 I'm pretty bad on days, but I think that was correct.
  • 06:11 And it left us wondering,
  • 06:13 could this program really continue.
  • 06:15 And thankfully, his wife, Sandra, came in and helped for a period of time,
  • 06:21 just on her own.
  • 06:22 Another Gentile Christian.
  • 06:25 And soon thereafter,
  • 06:28 Dr. Jeffrey Seif came in to help Sandra
  • 06:31 in telling the stories.
  • 06:33 We went to Israel together,
  • 06:35 we went to Greece and so forth,
  • 06:36 and continued the teaching of the Jewish roots of Christianity.
  • 06:39 What's Jeff's background?
  • 06:41 Jeff has been a professor of a number of Christian Universities - Institutes.
  • 06:47 Christ for the Nations here in Dallas.
  • 06:49 And we have worked together.
  • 06:51 In fact, I did a series for Christ for the Nations many years ago and
  • 06:56 understood his ability to communicate on camera.
  • 07:00 And I said, Jeff, would you take over this program?
  • 07:03 Just yourself, and carry on.
  • 07:04 And he did.
  • 07:05 Big shoes to fill.
  • 07:06 Big shoes to fill.
  • 07:08 So we had a great time together on a number of series.
  • 07:10 We were in jeeps traveling around Israel together.
  • 07:13 You can put us in jeeps.
  • 07:15 We don't mind.
  • 07:16 [all laughing]
  • 07:17 That might happen.
  • 07:18 That might happen in time.
  • 07:20 How many times have you been to Israel?
  • 07:22 I've been to Israel now 68 times.
  • 07:25 WOW!
  • 07:26 Unreal.
  • 07:28 And you know, it's like going home for me every time.
  • 07:30 I love it.
  • 07:31 Personally, I'm not Jewish, I'm a Christian.
  • 07:34 I was raised a "PK" as they >>say, a "Preacher's Kid".
  • 07:37 Yes, me too.
  • 07:39 And the fullness and the understanding
  • 07:41 of the whole Messianic element
  • 07:42 did not become real in my own life
  • 07:44 until being around Zola and Jeff and those who followed.
  • 07:47 And I'm still learning as you guys will be learning too.
  • 07:50 How's you Hebrew?
  • 07:52 Very bad.
  • 07:54 I don't mean to put you on the spot.
  • 07:56 There's no excuse after all these years
  • 07:57 why I don't speak Hebrew.
  • 07:59 Can you communicate in Israel?
  • 08:00 I can find my way to the bathroom.
  • 08:01 Nice!
  • 08:02 " Ha Sherutim "
  • 08:04 And I can order a cup of water.
  • 08:06 As you know " Ken " in Hebrew means "Yes".
  • 08:09 Which can be very problematic because
  • 08:11 I think people are talking to me - and they are just saying "yes".
  • 08:14 But I love going to Israel.
  • 08:17 I really, really do.
  • 08:19 So after Jeff Seif,
  • 08:21 Katharine and Myles.
  • 08:23 Katharine and Myles I had worked with
  • 08:25 on another project for Rosemary Schindler,
  • 08:27 the Schindler family.
  • 08:29 We had done a video together over there.
  • 08:31 And Katharine and Myles were on that tour.
  • 08:35 And I saw that they too, just like Jeff
  • 08:38 were able to communicate on camera so very well.
  • 08:42 So I asked them after a period of time,
  • 08:43 Katharine, Myles would you join us on the program
  • 08:47 and be the hosts of the program
  • 08:48 and travel to Israel?
  • 08:49 And they said, Yeah.
  • 08:50 And they welcomed it and they jumped on board
  • 08:52 and did a great job
  • 08:54 and I appreciate the time they spent with us.
  • 08:55 Were they 6 years?
  • 08:56 It was about 5 or 6 years.
  • 08:57 And we still have them on now
  • 09:00 Yes, yes, we'll continue to see repeats for awhile.
  • 09:02 And we just so do appreciate to this day.
  • 09:05 They have a Messianic Synagogue in the San Francisco area and
  • 09:09 I would encourage anybody in that area
  • 09:11 to visit their Synagogue
  • 09:13 and see Myles and Katharine.
  • 09:14 Can I say this also,
  • 09:16 that every time that we see a video in each program
  • 09:20 which are so great...
  • 09:22 Every video that you do from Israel with the Jewish actors,
  • 09:26 that's Ken producing those.
  • 09:28 They're so good.
  • 09:30 How do you put all of that group together
  • 09:32 and they're so good in their acting?
  • 09:35 Well, thank you so much.
  • 09:37 It's got to come from the Lord.
  • 09:39 I don't pat myself on the back saying
  • 09:41 how great this or that was or whatever.
  • 09:46 I have a great team
  • 09:47 that's with me even here in the studio with me today.
  • 09:50 And the Lord just brought all the pieces together miraculously.
  • 09:52 Hosts, such as yourself
  • 09:54 and the crew members here as well as in Israel
  • 09:57 just kind of show up at our door.
  • 09:59 What you have done, what you do
  • 10:01 especially with the dramatic videos.
  • 10:04 And they're not videos but
  • 10:05 presentations, reenactments.
  • 10:07 That sets this program apart.
  • 10:09 So this is who has done all of that.
  • 10:11 Bravo!
  • 10:12 Well thank you.
  • 10:14 We've not stopped.
  • 10:16 Because after Myles and Katharine
  • 10:17 now we have David and Kirsten Hart.
  • 10:20 And we thank you so much for...
  • 10:22 We're honored.
  • 10:23 Very much so.
  • 10:25 You know, it really is a God thing.
  • 10:28 I go back to this Jewish Christian element for those
  • 10:32 who wonder at home, Well why are you doing this Christian element?
  • 10:36 It was here from the very beginning with Dr. Tom McCall,
  • 10:40 Sandra Levitt comes in,
  • 10:41 I myself a Christian,
  • 10:43 and you know we're all learning together.
  • 10:46 You look at the Gospels for instance.
  • 10:48 It's all the same story about Yeshua.
  • 10:50 But you got Matthew, Mark, Luke, John...
  • 10:54 All these different aspects,
  • 10:55 different perspectives
  • 10:57 of who this Messiah was.
  • 10:59 So that's what we're doing.
  • 11:00 We're taking different elements.
  • 11:02 We will continue to have this Messianic teaching
  • 11:04 from those in Israel who...
  • 11:06 And that's our passion also.
  • 11:08 Yeah!
  • 11:09 We love it!
  • 11:09 It's so rich.
  • 11:10 I mean we are learning so much.
  • 11:12 And our eyes have been opened so much more.
  • 11:14 I come from a background like
  • 11:15 you did, as a Pastor's son.
  • 11:18 And we thought we knew it all about the Bible.
  • 11:20 But our eyes even as we learn and
  • 11:22 we are dedicated right now to this program
  • 11:24 and learning more about Zola Levitt and how he taught.
  • 11:28 But our eyes have been opened and
  • 11:30 we love the teaching that we've experienced.
  • 11:32 Once you get a taste of it, at least for myself,
  • 11:34 you just want to know more...
  • 11:36 you want to know more.
  • 11:37 Because the New Testament takes on such new life
  • 11:39 when you understand the types and shadows
  • 11:42 of Yeshua in the Old Testament.
  • 11:44 And so I'm learning to this very day.
  • 11:47 So the Messianic element will continue
  • 11:51 on this program perhaps even more so.
  • 11:54 We're going into a little bit more of a "Magazine" format
  • 11:58 to include multiple Messianic teachers.
  • 12:01 But all Yeshua again is always the center of what we are doing.
  • 12:05 Right - great people who will be teaching.
  • 12:07 Absolutely.
  • 12:08 We're excited to meet them
  • 12:09 and to hang with them in Israel.
  • 12:10 Absolutely - Yeah.
  • 12:12 Thank you again for joining us.
  • 12:14 Thank you Ken.
  • 12:15 Now coming up
  • 12:16 Wayne Fornier will be with us in the studio.
  • 12:19 He will be asking David and me about our stories.
  • 12:21 That's coming up.
  • 12:24 We live in a topsy turvy world where news events
  • 12:27 are sometimes twisted often leading to untruth.
  • 12:31 Here at Zola Levitt Presents we believe it's
  • 12:33 important to tell the truth of God's Word, the bible,
  • 12:36 and we believe it should be proclaimed to
  • 12:39 Israel and the nations.
  • 12:42 If you believe the same way,
  • 12:43 please consider us in your monthly giving support.
  • 12:46 Thank you.
  • 12:54 For many a trip to the Holy Land is the dream of a lifetime.
  • 12:58 The bible truly comes alive as you see the sites
  • 13:02 where so many biblical events happened; where the
  • 13:05 teaching is always from a Messianic perspective.
  • 13:08 Come on a Zola tour in the spring to see Israel and Petra,
  • 13:11 or in the fall to add a cruise to Greece and Ephesus.
  • 13:16 See the land of the bible for yourself.
  • 13:19 Contact us to reserve your dream of a lifetime.
  • 13:25 Wayne Fournier is in the studio with us now and
  • 13:28 I think we're about to have some questions.
  • 13:30 You're exactly right.
  • 13:31 You know earlier the two of you were interviewing
  • 13:33 Ken Berg, the executive producer of Zola Levitt Presents
  • 13:36 asking him all sorts of questions.
  • 13:38 We did.
  • 13:39 Well, now it's time to turn the tables.
  • 13:40 Uh oh, here we go.
  • 13:41 And that's why I'm here exactly.
  • 13:43 Kirsten, I'd like to begin with you first.
  • 13:45 The last time we were together you were telling
  • 13:47 me and all of us how you came to faith in God and in Jesus.
  • 13:50 I want to explore a little bit more about the Jewish roots.
  • 13:54 When did you become involved?
  • 13:56 Well, I grew up in the east, the east coast.
  • 13:59 Born in New York and raised in New Jersey.
  • 14:01 I went to public school.
  • 14:03 There were synagogues on every corner.
  • 14:05 Here in Dallas there are churches on every corner.
  • 14:08 Back east there are synagogues on every corner.
  • 14:10 So it wasn't foreign to me.
  • 14:12 I went to school with a girl that was Jewish.
  • 14:16 She was one of my best friends.
  • 14:18 I see.
  • 14:19 I remember going to her house around Passover time.
  • 14:22 I walked in and the whole house was covered in foil.
  • 14:26 That was new to me.
  • 14:27 I'd never seen anything like that before and realized...
  • 14:29 You know, now, I understand that they were
  • 14:32 cleaning all the leaven out of the house.
  • 14:34 So I grew up going to Seders.
  • 14:37 It wasn't foreign and it was something that I loved.
  • 14:41 My parents, I was just talking to them,
  • 14:43 and my Mom said, "Oh my gosh, we loved watching Zola Levitt!"
  • 14:46 back in the 70's and early 80's.
  • 14:49 Uh huh.
  • 14:50 So it's not foreign to me.
  • 14:52 It's very comfortable.
  • 14:54 And I love the Jewish lifestyle.
  • 14:56 You grew up around Jewish friends in New Jersey.
  • 14:57 I did.
  • 14:58 Yeah.
  • 15:00 A lot of us, when we find ourselves
  • 15:01 in a situation like you just described,
  • 15:03 we don't necessarily ask questions
  • 15:05 especially when we're younger.
  • 15:07 I don't know if you asked many questions of your
  • 15:09 Jewish friend when you were a teenager.
  • 15:11 I didn't.
  • 15:12 I remember thinking - that's really weird
  • 15:14 to have a whole house filled with foil,
  • 15:16 but she explained a little of it and I thought - Okay,
  • 15:18 that's just they did.
  • 15:21 So you saw Judaism as a separate religion from Christianity,
  • 15:24 which it is,
  • 15:26 but you never really thought about the fact
  • 15:28 that Christianity came out of Judaism.
  • 15:30 I didn't think it applied to me.
  • 15:32 I understood what they were doing and it was
  • 15:36 kind of like, well, that's what they do
  • 15:38 and we do something different.
  • 15:40 I know that sounds horrible,
  • 15:41 but so many of us have been raised that way
  • 15:44 and taught that that's for the Jewish people
  • 15:46 and this is for the Christians.
  • 15:48 We didn't even have the word "gentile."
  • 15:50 It wasn't even in, do you know what I mean?
  • 15:52 It wasn't even in my vocabulary.
  • 15:54 It was Christians and Jewish people
  • 15:56 and there was a separation.
  • 15:59 Is that horrible?
  • 16:00 Not really.
  • 16:01 When did you come to think of it differently though?
  • 16:04 When did you say to yourself, I want to know
  • 16:06 more about the Jewish roots of Christianity?
  • 16:08 I attended Bible College back in 1984.
  • 16:12 That will date me.
  • 16:13 I'm fifty-one.
  • 16:14 There, there world, I'm fifty-one.
  • 16:16 And proud of it.
  • 16:17 I love it!
  • 16:19 But when I went to Bible College,
  • 16:20 one of my first classes
  • 16:22 I had a professor and he told us, he said...
  • 16:25 And this was literally the first class.
  • 16:27 He said, "I want you to forget about everything that you've learned.
  • 16:31 Everything that a bible teacher or Sunday school

  • 19:58 I was going to say, that's an exaggeration, right?

  • 20:30 a little bit about your growing up and coming to
  • 20:32 faith in Christ, in Yeshua.
  • 20:35 Tell us about that.
  • 20:36 Sure.
  • 20:37 I grew up in southern California.
  • 20:39 At a young age, I believe I was two years old, when

  • 20:48 You're a preacher's kid?

  • 21:42 And let's see, his piano player, our accompanist
  • 21:45 every week was Sandy Patty.
  • 21:47 So I grew up with some really great musicians.
  • 21:50 So you learned a thing or two about music?
