Episode: “Kidron Valley”
The Kidron Valley lies between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. From the valley, Myles and Katharine give us the history of Jerusalem. Archaeologist Shimon Gibson speaks from the Golden (Eastern) Gate, where Messiah will enter when He returns.
Series: “Zion Forever”
This long-awaited, nine-part series looks back at Israel’s history and forward into prophecy while remembering the present status of the Temple Mount, the most contested real estate on Earth. Throughout the series, we hear from Our Man in Haifa Eitan Shishkoff, and Zola Levitt’s music complements the narrative and scenes of Israel.

Caption transcript for Zion Forever: “Kidron Valley” (4/9)

  • 00:04 And so, in a parallel way
  • 00:06 the Jewish people are looking for
  • 00:08 "Yemot HaMashiach"
  • 00:09 "The Day of Messiah"
  • 00:11 It is amazing, this parallel yearnings of
  • 00:14 the Christian believers and the Jewish people
  • 00:16 looking for the day of Messiah.
  • 00:45 For Zion's sake I will not hold my peace,
  • 00:48 and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest,
  • 00:53 until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
  • 00:57 and her salvation as a lamp that burns.
  • 01:10 Shalom, and welcome to our program.
  • 01:12 I'm Myles Weiss
  • 01:13 And I'm Katharine Weiss
  • 01:14 And we want to welcome you to our series "Zion Forever"
  • 01:18 We're talking about the City of David and the Temple Mount.
  • 01:21 The most contested real estate on the planet I would say.
  • 01:24 And not without cause
  • 01:25 because Jerusalem from God's point of view is the center of the earth.
  • 01:30 It's the center of the center
  • 01:32 because God chose it to be the apple of His eye.
  • 01:35 Israel is only 8,000 square miles.
  • 01:40 You can drive from east to west in about an hour and 45 minutes
  • 01:45 from north to south in about 8 hours roughly.
  • 01:49 And the surrounding nations surrounding...
  • 01:53 they have what? 5 million miles?
  • 01:55 5 million miles - the Muslim world.
  • 01:58 And we need you to know
  • 01:59 that does not just mean the Arab world.
  • 02:01 Many Arabs are Muslims but not all Muslims are Arabs,
  • 02:05 they're also made up of the Iranians who are Persian,
  • 02:07 the Turks who are Turkish,
  • 02:09 and even into Africa - Sudanese and the Somalians
  • 02:12 they are from...
  • 02:14 they have received and taken the Muslim religion ideology
  • 02:19 but they are not Arabs.
  • 02:20 So we are talking about a huge number of people
  • 02:23 and a tremendous amount of land surrounding this little place.
  • 02:27 And I always like to go back to Psalm 2...
  • 02:37 ...or bring down Israel.
  • 02:39 But God sits in the heavens and laughs.
  • 02:41 And as His believers we need to be that strong in our faith
  • 02:45 and not waiver, that God is in control.
  • 02:48 You know, we're really seeing the beginning of the time
  • 02:51 when the nations are pointing against Jerusalem,
  • 02:54 they're tilting towards Jerusalem.
  • 02:55 And Zechariah speaks very strongly about that,
  • 02:58 the stumbling block that Jerusalem becomes.
  • 03:01 And really Joel tells us in Joel 3...
  • 03:11 which is really the Kidron Valley.
  • 03:12 And so our first segment
  • 03:14 we'll be speaking to you from the Kidron Valley.
  • 03:16 So let's go there now.
  • 03:23 King David established Jerusalem 3,000 years ago.
  • 03:27 He made it the capital of the Jewish people.
  • 03:30 No other people,
  • 03:32 no other nation in the world
  • 03:33 has made it their capital,
  • 03:35 no monarchs, no Muslims,
  • 03:37 no Turks...no one Myles.
  • 03:39 It's really true.
  • 03:40 You know, it's said that
  • 03:42 Israel is 85 miles wide
  • 03:43 but 50 centuries deep.
  • 03:45 And we're really seeing that.
  • 03:47 Standing here we recognize that
  • 03:48 it's like the archaeological tells throughout the nation,
  • 03:51 the archeological sites.
  • 03:53 They're layered one on top of the other,
  • 03:55 one culture on another.
  • 03:56 Think about this.
  • 03:58 This area was held 3,000 years ago by the Canaanites,
  • 04:01 in particular, the Jebusites.
  • 04:03 At 1,000 BC,
  • 04:05 that's 3,000 years ago,
  • 04:07 King David took it over
  • 04:09 and made it the capital of Israel.
  • 04:11 Then in 586 the Babylonians came
  • 04:14 and took the Jews into captivity.
  • 04:17 At 538 BC the Persians came,
  • 04:20 conquered the Babylonians, and took over.
  • 04:22 And they lasted here until 332 when Alexander the Great came with the Greeks.
  • 04:28 In fact, there's a great story
  • 04:30 about Alexander the Great coming into Jerusalem
  • 04:32 and laying prostrate before Shimon Ha'Sadik, the High Priest at the time.
  • 04:38 And the Greeks, they were scandalized that their emperor
  • 04:43 would lay face down before the High Priest of Israel.
  • 04:46 But you know why?
  • 04:47 Because he had seen him in a dream.
  • 04:49 Several times before a battle, a decisive battle,
  • 04:53 Alexander the Great saw the picture,
  • 04:55 the picture of the High Priest of Israel in his dreams.
  • 04:59 And so he lay prostrate before him,
  • 05:01 a phenomenon in history.
  • 05:03 And the Greeks were here until 63 BC
  • 05:05 when the Romans took over.
  • 05:07 The Romans were in charge here until 70 AD.
  • 05:10 They destroyed Jerusalem as Yeshua had predicted that they would.
  • 05:14 And then in 324 AD Constantine came
  • 05:18 and made it a so-called Christian nation.
  • 05:21 He made the Roman empire a Christian empire in name only.
  • 05:26 And that lasted until 638 when the Muslims came up
  • 05:29 from Baghdad through Jordan and into Israel.
  • 05:33 And they ruled here until the Crusaders came slashing and dashing in 1099,
  • 05:39 a tremendous slaughter between the Crusaders and the Muslims.
  • 05:42 Many Jewish people were killed as well.
  • 05:44 And the Crusaders were here until 1266 AD when the Mamluks,
  • 05:50 the Muslims from Cairo came up and took over here for a short time.
  • 05:55 They ruled here until the Ottomans came in 1517,
  • 05:58 the Ottoman Turks.
  • 06:00 And they were here until the British with the white horsemen of Australia
  • 06:04 marched into Jerusalem in 1917, World War I,
  • 06:08 and began the British Mandate
  • 06:11 in which they divided up the Middle East according to their own likes
  • 06:15 and gave a small section to Israel which became a state in 1948.
  • 06:20 And in 1948 the prophetic clock started ticking.
  • 06:25 And we're looking forward from Ezekiel 36:37
  • 06:29 the rising from the graves and coming into the Land
  • 06:33 to the season we're in now.
  • 06:34 And God is sprinkling clean water on His people
  • 06:37 and calling us back to Himself.
  • 06:39 And we're looking forward to the Book of Revelation.
  • 06:42 Absolutely!
  • 06:43 You know, the Book of Revelations in 20 it says
  • 06:46 that the LORD Himself shall return and conquer Jerusalem.
  • 06:50 The King of Glory,
  • 06:52 the One and Only Jesus our Messiah
  • 06:54 will return to this place, this HaMakom
  • 06:58 and He will establish His Kingdom rule for 1,000 years.
  • 07:02 And you...
  • 07:03 if you are a believer will be with Him.
  • 07:06 I want to invite you
  • 07:07 to say "yes" to Yeshua
  • 07:09 and meet us here for the Millennial Kingdom.
  • 07:12 Your financial contributions to Zola Levitt Ministries
  • 07:15 enable us to bring you...
  • 07:17 our weekly television series,
  • 07:19 our monthly newsletter,
  • 07:20 and our website.
  • 07:22 But you may not know
  • 07:23 that your gift of funds also
  • 07:25 makes a difference in Israel
  • 07:26 through our support of...
  • 07:27 the Jerusalem Archaeology fund,
  • 07:29 Bridges for Peace,
  • 07:31 and the Lone Soldier fund.
  • 07:33 We welcome your donations
  • 07:35 to Zola Levitt Ministries
  • 07:37 as we serve together
  • 07:38 until the Messiah returns.
  • 07:43 (Myles speaking) Further up Mount Moriah
  • 07:44 I met with Dr. Shimon Gibson
  • 07:46 an expert on the 2nd Temple period.
  • 07:48 He is the author of "The Final Days of Jesus: The Archaeological Evidence"
  • 07:54 Shimon, you have been writing about
  • 07:56 this famous area since the early 90's.
  • 07:58 Tell us a little bit
  • 07:59 about the discoveries and the history,
  • 08:02 the research that you've done here.
  • 08:03 Well, since the beginning of the 20th century
  • 08:06 archeologists haven't been
  • 08:07 permitted to research
  • 08:09 the underground subterranean
  • 08:11 parts of the Temple Mount.
  • 08:13 So, we have to base ourselves on archival materials.
  • 08:17 And I was given the opportunity
  • 08:19 of looking at all of the cisterns, channels and tunnels
  • 08:25 which exist beneath the Temple Mount
  • 08:27 in an archive in London.
  • 08:29 And as a result, I wrote a book
  • 08:30 with a colleague of mine, David Jacobson.
  • 08:32 And really it's a ruin of subterranean spaces.
  • 08:36 And all of the these areas tell us a story
  • 08:39 about how the Temple Mount developed
  • 08:42 all the way from the Biblical period,
  • 08:46 but especially for that time which existed
  • 08:49 in the 1st century, at the time of Jesus.
  • 08:53 And here we are at the Golden Gate.
  • 08:55 This is on the east side of the Temple Mount.
  • 08:59 And it's here, according to Jewish and Christian belief,
  • 09:03 the Messiah will return.
  • 09:05 Exactly so.
  • 09:06 Now, there's a Muslim cemetery here which,
  • 09:09 allegedly precludes the Messiah, Mashiach coming through here.
  • 09:13 But I think that he can probably take care of that.
  • 09:15 And you've written about the Via Dolorosa
  • 09:17 and the challenges, basically to that pathway to the crucifixion,
  • 09:23 and tell us about that as well.
  • 09:25 I decided at some point to write a book called "The Final Days of Jesus: Archaeological Evidence"
  • 09:33 concentrating on all the archaeological facts
  • 09:36 that we know about
  • 09:37 Jerusalem at the time of Jesus,
  • 09:39 and also in terms of
  • 09:40 the movements of Jesus
  • 09:41 within the city and outside as well.
  • 09:44 And piecing it all together,
  • 09:47 it's quite amazing the results which have come out of that.
  • 09:51 And one of them is that as a result of
  • 09:55 the Crusaders hard way of dealing with the inhabitants of Jerusalem
  • 10:00 when they conquered Jerusalem in 1099.
  • 10:03 They simply killed everyone in site
  • 10:05 whether or not they were Jewish, Muslim or local Christian.
  • 10:10 As a result, the whole tradition of the Via Dolorosa
  • 10:13 from the place of the trial to the place of the crucifixion
  • 10:17 was shifted from one side of the city to the other.
  • 10:19 Wow, so what is your belief about the actual findings,
  • 10:23 what you saw there and where the pathway would really be?
  • 10:26 Well, the trial can now be placed in the old palace of Herod the Great
  • 10:32 which is situated on the west side of the city.
  • 10:35 And 99% of all scholars all over the world would agree on that.
  • 10:40 And so the Via Dolorosa, the path that was taken
  • 10:45 when Jesus was taken by the Roman soldiers
  • 10:48 from Pontius Pilate to the place of crucifixion
  • 10:51 would have led from the west side of the city
  • 10:55 towards the north, through the city
  • 10:57 to the Gennath Gate.
  • 10:58 He was then led outside to Golgotha which is now
  • 11:01 beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
  • 11:04 And indeed, together with another colleague of mine, Joan Taylor,
  • 11:07 I wrote a book about the archeology of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
  • 11:11 And what's interesting is that they used to be
  • 11:13 an enormous cavity there, a quarry.
  • 11:15 So Golgotha wasn't really consisting of crosses
  • 11:21 which were on top of a knoll, a kind of little hillock,
  • 11:26 but actually was within a basin-like area
  • 11:29 which had been quarried out for stone in antiquity.
  • 11:32 So, it was very much a public display, not a hill far away
  • 11:35 as we hear in the hymns.
  • 11:37 Yes, I mean you would be passing along the road
  • 11:40 which would come out of the city
  • 11:42 and you could then see on right as you came out of the city,
  • 11:45 you would see this large quarry area
  • 11:48 with tombs which had been cut into the scarps;
  • 11:51 little gardens below because the water would have come down from the large pool which was there.
  • 11:58 Hence, we hear in the Gospel of John regarding the Garden which
  • 12:02 was in the area close to the tomb of Joseph of Aramathea
  • 12:07 where Jesus was brought for burial.
  • 12:10 And so, regarding the current availability
  • 12:13 of artifacts from these sites,
  • 12:16 how do you...
  • 12:17 I know there's a Temple sifting project
  • 12:19 and there are people that are trying to find things that are here.
  • 12:22 But it's really limited isn't it, as to what you can do.
  • 12:26 As an archaeologist, I would love to excavate in the Temple Mount area.
  • 12:30 But there are religious sensitivities.
  • 12:33 It is a Muslim place of worship.
  • 12:37 The Haram al-Sharif in Arabic,
  • 12:39 the Splendid Enclosure
  • 12:43 and that's where, according to tradition,
  • 12:45 Muhammed alighted to the heavens.
  • 12:47 And so on that basis, there's no possibility of excavating within.
  • 12:52 However, you can do a lot of research
  • 12:54 based on even the examination of the external walls,
  • 12:58 here on the left of this gate you can see the remains of large stones at the base of the wall
  • 13:05 which can be dated all the way back to the Hasmoneon period,
  • 13:09 to the late Hellenistic period
  • 13:11 and perhaps even earlier.
  • 13:12 And on the far left you can see a little gate there which is
  • 13:15 blocked up just behind the tombs over there.
  • 13:18 And what's interesting is, at the base of this Gate,
  • 13:21 that might be the Shusan Gate
  • 13:23 which is referred to in the texts.
  • 13:25 Through which the sunlight would have then fallen through the gate,
  • 13:29 straight through in the direction of the Temple itself,
  • 13:34 the House of God.
  • 13:36 It would have, because of all the gold which is on the exterior of the Temple,
  • 13:39 it would have made this the most amazing monument.
  • 13:43 And so you can imagine when Jesus comes into the City
  • 13:46 coming from the direction of Bethany
  • 13:50 surrounded by His followers,
  • 13:52 it must have been an amazing view to see this golden Temple,
  • 13:56 the House of God beckoning Him from a distance.
  • 14:06 What lies ahead for Jerusalem?
  • 14:08 This City, so precious to God,
  • 14:11 has been at the center of Bible history
  • 14:13 for more than 4,000 years.
  • 14:15 And its future?
  • 14:17 Zola Levitt reveals the answer in this week's resource.
  • 14:21 A booklet entitled "Jerusalem Forever"
  • 14:24 Zola writes about the history of this great city
  • 14:28 and its future for believers.

  • 15:03 And as always, thank you very much.
  • 15:07 As a scientist you are majoring in what is, not speculation,
  • 15:11 theological prejudices, or a mind set.
  • 15:15 You've mentioned before that you're looking for objective evidence.
  • 15:20 And I believe you found some and you've really opened the door for other scientists as well.
  • 15:25 I have no problem in describing myself as a Biblical archeologist.
  • 15:28 But I'm looking at the science.
  • 15:31 And we have to be very exact about how we interpret
  • 15:36 the evidence that comes out of the ground.
  • 15:39 But here, we can bring together Biblical texts, information that comes from alternative sources
  • 15:47 such as the writings of Josephus Flavius
  • 15:50 who was a Jewish historian of the first century.
  • 15:52 And put that together with archaeology
  • 15:55 and it allows us to re-create Jerusalem at the time of Jesus.
  • 15:59 And it tells us about the difficulties that Jesus had
  • 16:03 getting His message across in this very important city.
  • 16:07 Because the streets were narrow.
  • 16:09 There were a lot of houses built up one against the other.
  • 16:13 The public spaces available to Him were quite pagan,
  • 16:17 you know, the Hippodrome and the Theatre.
  • 16:20 It was not the sort of place He would go to.
  • 16:22 So, the only place that He could really get His message across
  • 16:25 was either within the area of the Temple itself, within the outer courts
  • 16:31 or within the two pools close to the Temple,
  • 16:35 the Bethesda and Siloam pools
  • 16:37 where He could then also deal with aspects relating to healing
  • 16:42 which of course were so important in terms of His mission.
  • 16:46 And that's what I was just thinking.
  • 16:48 That there were only two miracles in Jerusalem,
  • 16:50 one at Beth Hesed, the Bethesda pool;
  • 16:53 and the other at the Pool of Siloam.
  • 16:56 Yes, both stories are recounted in the Gospel of John.
  • 17:00 What's interesting, I've done research on the Bethesda pool
  • 17:05 which is just in this direction just beyond the Temple Mount.
  • 17:09 And I found something really quite interesting
  • 17:11 because in the Gospel of John in chapter 5 we hear about
  • 17:15 the murmuring on the water
  • 17:17 Yes
  • 17:18 when the invalid is taken in and Jesus takes him in;
  • 17:21 there's something really interesting.
  • 17:23 We found the steps and landings,
  • 17:25 another flight of steps and landings.
  • 17:27 Landings of course, so that the beds could be placed there for
  • 17:30 those who are unable to walk down into the water themselves.
  • 17:34 And the murmuring is because there you have a reservoir,
  • 17:38 the so-called Northern Pool
  • 17:41 and through a little tunnel at the base of the wall there
  • 17:45 water was brought into the Southern Pool.
  • 17:48 Whenever water came through then you get the bubbling up of the air which is being expelled
  • 17:55 And that is the murmuring on the waters.
  • 17:57 Some translations say the "stirring" of the water.
  • 17:59 Exactly
  • 18:00 But there's an interface between supernatural and the natural
  • 18:03 perhaps at those places.
  • 18:06 (Katharine speaking) From the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem
  • 18:08 we take you to the north of Israel
  • 18:11 to hear from "Our Man in Haifa"
  • 18:13 Eitan Shishkoff
  • 18:16 Shalom
  • 18:17 I'm sitting right next to the Haifa Bay.
  • 18:20 And really, the Haifa Bay lies in the shadow
  • 18:23 of Mount Carmel just to the south of us.
  • 18:26 I know most of you will remember the story of Elijah the Prophet
  • 18:30 who called down fire on to Mount Carmel.
  • 18:32 I just want to remind you what it says in the scriptures
  • 18:35 in I Kings, Chapter 18
  • 18:58 This was quite a major event
  • 19:01 during a time when Israel was far from God.
  • 19:05 It's really interesting
  • 19:07 because today if we were able to see it,
  • 19:11 the entire slope of Mount Carmel
  • 19:13 is covered with high-rise apartments.
  • 19:15 There'a a huge, modern international harbor.
  • 19:18 And behind me you can even see an ocean freighter
  • 19:22 which is bringing commercial goods
  • 19:25 from the ports of the world
  • 19:27 into Israel through Haifa.
  • 19:29 This tremendous influx of population
  • 19:34 was not there in Elijah's time.
  • 19:36 In Elijah's time we're talking about a mountain
  • 19:39 and we're talking about people having come from the neighboring area.
  • 19:44 Just up the coast is where Jezebel was from.
  • 19:46 Jezebel and Ahab, you will remember were queen and king at that time
  • 19:50 and the spiritual struggle was immense.
  • 19:54 Interestingly, now...
  • 19:56 what should we say?
  • 19:57 more than 2 1/2 millennia later
  • 20:01 there is still a struggle on Mount Carmel and in this area
  • 20:05 because, of course, the present-day residents of Israel
  • 20:09 are not all worshipping the God of Israel.
  • 20:11 Many are worshipping material things.
  • 20:14 Other are worshipping, actually, eastern gods
  • 20:21 and all kinds of false idols.
  • 20:24 So this battle continues until today
  • 20:27 and I want to bring you into this battle in the way of prayer.
  • 20:30 It was in the book of James that we read the statement
  • 20:40 And Elijah has given us an example
  • 20:42 because it didn't rain for 3 1/2 years.
  • 20:44 But as soon as Elijah appealed to God;
  • 20:46 called down fire from heaven,
  • 20:48 then they saw the cloud the size of a man's hand
  • 20:51 over these waters.
  • 20:53 And then the rain began to fall.
  • 20:55 The rain of the Holy Spirit will come on this Land.
  • 20:57 But it's really depending
  • 20:59 on our prayers... yours and mine.
  • 21:01 Thank you, so much.
