Episode: “The Jewish Wedding”
In Matthew 25:1–13, Messiah speaks in terms of Jewish wedding customs, including a midnight cry and marriage feast. He advises us to be like the five wise virgins, commanding that we “watch therefore and be ready.”
Series: “Watch Therefore and Be Ready”
Watch Therefore and Be Ready encourages this generation to be aware of prophetic fulfillment, live expectantly, and be ready for Messiah’s return. David and Kirsten Hart present this eight-part series that features teaching from Dov Schwarz, guest analyst Dr. Mark Hitchcock, reports from Israel with Chaim Malespin, Hebrew lessons, and music written by Zola Levitt.

Caption transcript for Watch Therefore and Be Ready: “The Jewish Wedding” (6/8)

  • 00:05 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved,
  • 00:11 for there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek,
  • 00:15 for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.
  • 00:39 Hi, I'm David Hart.
  • 00:40 Welcome to Zola Levitt Presents.
  • 00:41 And I'm Kirsten Hart.
  • 00:43 We are in our series, "Watch Therefore".
  • 00:46 It's all about prophecy.
  • 00:49 Today's program is about the Groom, our Bridegroom,
  • 00:53 that is coming to get us.
  • 00:55 Today, on location in Israel
  • 00:57 Dov Scwarz will be teaching,
  • 00:59 as well as our good friend Chaim.
  • 01:01 We'll have our weekly Hebrew Lesson, "Shalom Haverim",
  • 01:04 and Dr. Mark Hitchcock will be right here at this desk.
  • 01:08 All of our segments today,
  • 01:10 all of the teaching,
  • 01:11 is filmed on location in Israel.
  • 01:15 Dov will be teaching on Matthew 25,
  • 01:18 the return of the Bridegroom.
  • 01:20 Right now let's go to the Sea of Galilee with Dov.
  • 01:28 What an amazingly beautiful place,
  • 01:31 the Sea of Galilee.
  • 01:33 The water where our Savior once walked.
  • 01:36 It's from this place I'd like to share a teaching with you,
  • 01:39 Matthew Chapter 25.
  • 01:41 But to understand this I'm going to share a little bit
  • 01:44 about the Jewish Wedding Ceremony.
  • 01:46 This is an actual spot where they would have today,
  • 01:49 a Chuppah with a Groom and a Bride here in Israel.
  • 01:55 Now, the 1st Century Jewish Wedding...
  • 01:59 It begins like this.
  • 02:02 The father of the groom and the groom
  • 02:04 go to the father of the bride and the bride.
  • 02:07 And they make an agreement.
  • 02:10 The groom and the father agree to pay the bride price.
  • 02:14 Messiah Yeshua, He paid the bride price,
  • 02:18 His precious blood for our sins.
  • 02:21 He was buried, and hallelujah on the 3rd day he rose from the grave.
  • 02:26 Now the groom would go back to the father's house
  • 02:30 and he would build a suitable place onto the father's house
  • 02:33 and then he would go back and get his bride and take her to it.
  • 02:37 Now, Messiah Yeshua said,
  • 03:06 But when? What's the hour or the day of that taking place?
  • 03:10 Messiah Yeshua said,
  • 03:11 "Nobody but the Father knows the hour or the day."
  • 03:13 That's because in a Jewish Wedding
  • 03:16 the father would inspect the work of his son.
  • 03:21 And only the Father knew when he would say, "Now go and get your bride."
  • 03:25 What was the bride to be doing?
  • 03:27 She was to be purifying herself.
  • 03:28 Let me ask you this.
  • 03:29 Was she to be hanging out with other guys?
  • 03:32 Was she to be just complacent, and he'll come when he comes.
  • 03:36 No, no, no.
  • 03:38 You see this is the blessed hope.
  • 03:40 The Bride was to be preparing herself, purifying herself
  • 03:43 The Bible says in I John
  • 03:50 Well the groom would come often times at midnight unannounced
  • 03:56 and the bride, she was to be ready.
  • 04:00 "Watch therefore and be ready." Amen?
  • 04:03 We'll be right back.
  • 04:13 We are hearing in this series
  • 04:14 to live in expectation of our Lord's return.
  • 04:17 Much like that of a bride
  • 04:19 waiting for her groom to come.
  • 04:21 He could come at any hour.
  • 04:22 Can you imagine that expectation?
  • 04:24 When is He coming, when is He coming?
  • 04:26 Yes.
  • 04:27 Right now let's go to Israel
  • 04:28 and hear more from Chaim Malespin.
  • 04:37 Here we are in one of my favorite places in our nation's Capital.
  • 04:40 That's right, Jerusalem,
  • 04:42 the undivided capital of Israel.
  • 04:43 God looks at this Land
  • 04:45 from the beginning of the year to the end,
  • 04:47 But we know He sees the whole world with an Israel lens.
  • 04:52 Do you know what I mean?
  • 04:53 It says, Israel is the Apple of His eye,
  • 04:55 the pupil of His eye.
  • 04:56 And this is the core of, you know,
  • 05:01 since Abraham came here
  • 05:02 as it says in Genesis Chapter 22, Verse 2,
  • 05:05 and brought his son Isaac here to the mountains of Moriah, or Mount Zion.
  • 05:09 We know that much later on the Temple was built here by Solomon,
  • 05:13 it says, in II Chronicles Chapter 3, Verse 1,
  • 05:17 and we know that the story is not over
  • 05:20 because, as we're uncovering the history
  • 05:23 we're also looking forward to when the
  • 05:26 Messiah will return to this very spot.
  • 05:28 Down below is a 1st Century Road.
  • 05:32 Yeah, Yeshua probably walked on this road.
  • 05:34 We know that 3 times a year
  • 05:36 Jewish people come from all over
  • 05:38 to bring their offerings in through those gates
  • 05:40 to where the Temple would have stood,
  • 05:42 and of course somewhere along there we would have heard the trumpeters
  • 05:46 trumpeting when the Shabbat begins and ends.
  • 05:49 It's just amazing to see so much all together.
  • 05:54 There's the Muslim prayers,
  • 05:55 there's Christian bells,
  • 05:57 and there is Jewish life once again here in the City of Jerusalem,
  • 06:02 as prophecy foretold.
  • 06:04 Let's continue to move together as One,
  • 06:07 Jew and Gentile in the flow of the Spirit.
  • 06:17 Our Resource this week,
  • 06:18 the series "Watch Therefore And Be Ready" on DVD.
  • 06:23 This 8 program series points to...
  • 06:31 Each program includes location teaching,
  • 06:34 Reports from Israel,
  • 06:35 in studio analysis,
  • 06:37 plus music from David and Kirsten Hart.
  • 06:40 Contact us and ask for the DVD Series
  • 06:43 "Watch Therefore And Be Ready"
  • 06:48 We'll return to the program in just a moment,
  • 06:50 but first I wanted to ask if you've ever thought
  • 06:52 about what it takes to put this program together.
  • 06:56 I can assure you it's a lot more than just lights, camera, action.
  • 06:59 There's a lot of prayer and planning,
  • 07:02 and our family is a lot like yours.
  • 07:05 We pray and we plan,
  • 07:07 and we hope that you'll be praying for us,
  • 07:09 and planning to help support us too.
  • 07:25 Jesus in the Olivet Discourse
  • 07:27 gave His prediction of the End Time events.
  • 07:30 And He said in Luke 21:24
  • 07:41 That's the only place in the New Testament in the Bible
  • 07:44 where the phrase "Times of the Gentiles" is found.
  • 07:47 Now my personal view on the "Times of the Gentiles"
  • 07:50 is it started in 586 BC
  • 07:53 This is when Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians came and destroyed Jerusalem.
  • 07:59 From 586 BC all the way through our present time
  • 08:04 there has been no Davidic King sitting
  • 08:07 on the Throne of David ruling Israel.
  • 08:10 When Israel comes to fulfill it's destiny when Messiah comes,
  • 08:14 He will reign from Jerusalem on a throne
  • 08:17 which is connected with the Temple Mount.
  • 08:19 We see this in Isaiah Chapter 2, Verses 2-4
  • 08:22 That's the culmination of all the great promises,
  • 08:25 just as Moses went to Mount Sinai to receive the Law, and said,
  • 08:30 Israel's to be a Light to the nations,
  • 08:32 ultimately to get the revelation to them,
  • 08:34 one day Messiah will come on Mount Zion,
  • 08:37 bringing the Law through Israel to the Gentile nations,
  • 08:41 and reigning in that place as well.
  • 08:44 So all of these come full circle with the
  • 08:46 prophesies in the Old Testament.
  • 08:49 Listen, we are the family of God.
  • 08:52 As we go further into the End Time,
  • 08:54 we will be together,
  • 08:56 I'm looking forward to the day
  • 08:58 when we step into the millennial kingdom together.
  • 09:00 It's going to be wonderful, you know?
  • 09:02 And we ought to spend that time with our Savior,
  • 09:05 Jew and Gentile family of God.
  • 09:08 Listen, I thank God for what the Word of God predicts for our future.
  • 09:13 And again, I'm grateful.
  • 09:14 That gives me such a peace in these End Times,
  • 09:18 as I see all the chaos and everything that goes on.
  • 09:21 But, my safety is in the authority of this Book,
  • 09:26 and I judge everything I see and hear, based on the authority of this Book.
  • 09:30 And if you do that, you won't go astray.
  • 09:40 Our great Messiah Yeshua is speaking in Matthew 25.
  • 10:01 In the Bible oftentimes oil is a picture of the Holy Spirit.
  • 10:07 Now if you were to look at these 10 virgins,
  • 10:10 all of them look the same,
  • 10:11 but 5 did not have the oil and 5 did.
  • 10:44 So these 5, they weren't prepared.
  • 10:46 They weren't eagerly waiting for the Bridegroom to come in that they were not ready.
  • 10:52 And that's what we see here,
  • 10:54 how significant it is to be ready.
  • 11:09 You know what this makes me think of?
  • 11:12 In Noah's time I'm certain that his neighbors
  • 11:16 would have mocked him and that were laughing at him
  • 11:18 all those years he was building that boat.
  • 11:21 My goodness, it had never rained before on the earth.
  • 11:24 But it started raining and the waters rose.
  • 11:29 And I'm confident that those people were beating on the door of that ark
  • 11:34 wanting their lives to be spared.
  • 11:38 No way to get away from the rain.
  • 11:42 But there was no way even Noah could have opened the door.
  • 11:45 Why?
  • 11:47 Because it was the Lord who shut it.
  • 11:50 And so it will be at the marriage ceremony in heaven.
  • 11:56 Now the 5 who were wise were ready.
  • 12:01 Are you ready for the Bridegroom to come?
  • 12:05 It continues.
  • 12:19 When we come back in just a moment
  • 12:22 I'm going to share with you from another passage in the Gospel of Matthew,
  • 12:26 when our Messiah said the same thing,
  • 12:30 and exactly what that means.
  • 12:32 Now more than ever, this is the time
  • 12:35 to be ready for the Bridegroom.
  • 12:45 I really do believe that faith comes by hearing,
  • 12:46 and hearing by the Word of God.
  • 12:48 I cannot argue anyone into the faith.
  • 12:50 I love apologetics, I teach apologetics
  • 12:52 I appreciate and value the importance of
  • 12:55 evidentialism and rationalism and those fields,
  • 12:58 and I think they have their place
  • 13:00 for opening a door for the Gospel,
  • 13:02 but at the end of the day, you know,
  • 13:04 "My 37 Reasons for the Resurrection"
  • 13:07 isn't going to get someone saved.
  • 13:09 It might provide a hearing for the Gospel,
  • 13:13 but it's the Spirit of God doing a work of God in their heart
  • 13:15 and when they respond by faith to the Gospel, they'll be saved.

  • 15:06 overlooking the Sea of Galilee,
  • 15:08 and we didn't know that whole area
  • 15:10 around the Sea of Galilee
  • 15:12 is called "The Galilee".
  • 15:14 I think its one of your favorite spots in Israel.
  • 15:16 It is!
  • 15:17 Well, its not developed.
  • 15:19 You can still walk on the rocks next to the Sea of Galilee,
  • 15:21 much like Yeshua did.
  • 15:23 It's just a beautiful place.

  • 15:34 Now let's learn some Hebrew.
  • 15:43 Shalom Haverim
  • 15:44 One of the words we use in Israel every day is the word Toda .
  • 15:48 It means "Thank you"
  • 15:50 So as somebody gives you something,
  • 15:52 or as you request something
  • 15:54 you can say the word Toda , "Thank You"
  • 15:57 Now if somebody gives you something really special
  • 15:59 like a beautiful gift that means a lot to you,
  • 16:02 You can add the word Raba , which means "Great".
  • 16:06 So,"Great Thanks", Toda Raba
  • 16:09 So next time somebody gives you something
  • 16:11 or you ask for something and you receive it,
  • 16:14 you can say, Toda or Toda Raba
  • 16:20 This is a great, almost Hebrew 101 easy learning words.
  • 16:24 Love this word.
  • 16:26 Toda is "Thank you"
  • 16:28 and Toda Raba is Thank you
  • 16:30 very much.
  • 16:32 and Raba actually means "very much",
  • 16:34 and if you are going to go to Israel
  • 16:36 you just need to learn this.
  • 16:37 We need to show that
  • 16:38 people coming in to the Land of Israel
  • 16:41 are polite and are thankful.
  • 16:43 That's right.
  • 16:44 You know, as you're saying that
  • 16:45 I'm thinking about Yeshua.
  • 16:47 If nothing else we just need to say
  • 16:48 Toda Raba to Yeshua for all He's done for us in our lives.
  • 16:53 That's good.
  • 16:54 Let's go back to our teaching in Israel.
  • 16:56 Here's Dov.
  • 17:03 The 5 foolish virgins are shut out
  • 17:05 of the wedding ceremony in heaven.
  • 17:08 And they say, "Lord, Lord open to us!
  • 17:12 But He answered and said, 'Assuredly I say to you I do not know you.'
  • 17:16 In Matthew Chapter 7 Adonai Yeshua , our Lord Jesus says,
  • 17:45 And here's a question.
  • 17:46 Where will they go when He says depart from me?
  • 17:49 They'll go to " Gehinnom " - "Hell".
  • 17:54 The same place the 5 foolish will go.
  • 17:59 What's the answer?
  • 18:00 How do I know for sure that I'm going to be at the Wedding Ceremony?
  • 18:04 It's a very good question.
  • 18:06 And the Lord gives us a answer in Verse 13 of Matthew 25.
  • 18:16 Watch therefore.
  • 18:18 Be ready.
  • 18:19 What does it mean to watch for Him to come?
  • 18:22 It means to love Him more than this world.
  • 18:25 To love the next life in Messiah Yeshua,
  • 18:27 the Eternal Life He gives us, more than this life.
  • 18:31 It means that I want Him to come for me.
  • 18:34 I want to go to be with Him.
  • 18:36 I love Yeshua.
  • 18:38 I love Jesus the Lord.
  • 18:41 Right?
  • 18:42 And He said the first commandment is to love the Lord your God
  • 18:44 with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength,
  • 18:47 to love your neighbor as yourself.
  • 18:49 To watch for Him is to love Him and to be preparing yourself
  • 18:54 to spend eternity with Him.
  • 18:57 It's kind of a foreign concept today in this kind of "Me-ism" Christianity.
  • 19:02 Right?
  • 19:04 And so, to watch for Him and to be ready,
  • 19:08 that my thinking, speaking and living
  • 19:11 is under the Lordship, the Headship of Messiah Yeshua.
  • 19:16 It's to live a Holy life.
  • 19:18 Now that doesn't mean floating around on a cloud.
  • 19:20 What it means is to be set apart for Him.
  • 19:24 Isn't that what a bride is to be?
  • 19:26 Set apart for the groom?
  • 19:29 To be set apart for Him and to be living a life
  • 19:33 that says to a lost and dying world.
  • 19:35 Come and go with me to my Father's House.
  • 19:39 I'm waiting for my Messiah to come.
  • 19:42 I'm saying no to other things that are temporal
  • 19:47 and I'm saying yes to things that demonstrate
  • 19:50 I believe He's coming for me any time.
  • 19:54 And I'm watching and I'm ready.
  • 19:56 Put your faith in Messiah Yeshua,
  • 19:59 He died on the Cross for your sins,
  • 20:01 was buried and rose again,
  • 20:03 and follow Him until He comes.
  • 20:05 Watch therefore
  • 20:06 and be ready.
  • 20:14 Well all I just want to say is
  • 20:15 Folks, we are indeed living in the Last Days,
  • 20:18 and Jesus Christ, I believe is
  • 20:19 coming sooner rather than later.
  • 20:21 We must, Number 1, share the Gospel with people
  • 20:24 that are perishing all around us.
  • 20:26 Number 2, we must pray for the Peace of Jerusalem
  • 20:28 as talked about in Psalm 122.
  • 20:30 Reach out to the Jewish people and show them how much that we love them,
  • 20:33 and that we will stand behind them
  • 20:35 until the King of kings and LORD of Lords returns.
  • 20:40 I'm sure you've heard this before
  • 20:41 that we are living in the Last Days of the Last Days.
  • 20:44 Dr. Mark Hitchcock is here to give us
  • 20:47 some great insight on that topic.
  • 20:50 And we've been speaking about the Bride
  • 20:53 getting ready preparing for her Groom.
  • 20:55 The "Bride" is the "Church"
  • 20:57 but are we just kind of getting tired of waiting?
  • 20:59 Is that what you see?
  • 21:00 Well, I think sometimes that's true with a lot of people.
  • 21:02 In fact, I've heard people years ago say,
  • 21:05 I've been hearing all my life that Jesus is coming back,
  • 21:07 and He hasn't come back yet.
  • 21:09 So when's He going to come?
  • 21:10 I think that's what we see in that parable in Matthew 25 about
  • 21:14 the Bridegroom coming and these 10 virgins who are there waiting.
  • 21:17 The Bridegroom in that day would go
  • 21:19 and get his bride from her family,
  • 21:22 and she would be presented to him,
  • 21:24 and he would go back to his father's house.
  • 21:26 That pictures Jesus coming and getting us
  • 21:28 and taking us to His Father's house in heaven.
  • 21:31 But it pictures these 10 virgins or 10 bridesmaids,
  • 21:36 and they're all bridesmaids,
  • 21:37 they're all virgins,
  • 21:39 they all go out to meet Him,
  • 21:40 but there's one difference between them,
  • 21:41 and that is 5 of them have oil in their lamps,
  • 21:44 and 5 of them don't.
  • 21:45 I think the main point of that parable is,
  • 21:47 5 of them were ready and 5 of them weren't.
  • 21:50 What's interesting too, they all fall asleep.
  • 21:52 That's also interesting.
  • 21:54 All of them fall asleep,
  • 21:55 but some of them when they hear the cry,
  • 21:57 "Behold the Bridegroom comes!"
  • 21:58 they wake up and they're ready
  • 21:59 because they have oil in their lamps.
  • 22:01 I don't think we have to look very far in the Church today
  • 22:04 to see a lot of believers are asleep.
  • 22:07 Do you think our Pastors are preaching that?
  • 22:10 To be ready?
  • 22:11 To be ready.
  • 22:12 Well, I don't think a lot of them are.
  • 22:14 There's just a lot of lethargy I think, a lot of sleep.
  • 22:16 I Thessalonians 5:6 says, Don't sleep as others do.
  • 22:20 We need to be called and we need to be roused,
  • 22:22 and we need to be awakened.
  • 22:23 Again, I think the coming of Jesus Christ,
  • 22:25 and talking about prophetic truth,
  • 22:27 and what's happening in our world today
  • 22:28 is one of the ways that people are awake.
  • 22:31 We don't want to just talk about prophecy all the time.
  • 22:33 There's a lot of doctrines we need to talk about,
  • 22:36 a lot of truths in the Bible.
  • 22:37 I always say, the sheep need a good well balanced diet,
  • 22:40 but I think today in many, many churches
  • 22:43 the prophetic is really downplayed,
  • 22:46 if not just neglected all together.
  • 22:48 I think that really fits in, or really kind of plays to
  • 22:54 this lethargy that we see in the Church today,
  • 22:56 and people need to be aroused and know that Christ is coming,
  • 22:58 and be ready.
  • 22:59 And its exciting because in Israel
  • 23:01 I think there's so much prophecy coming about right now.
  • 23:04 Don't you believe that?
  • 23:05 Well there is.
  • 23:06 And so we have every reason today
  • 23:07 to be more awake than any generation.
  • 23:10 That's exciting!
  • 23:11 But yet I think we see maybe
  • 23:12 more people asleep than at any time.
  • 23:14 So it's kind of a strange irony.
  • 23:16 Which I think is the reason
  • 23:17 that Yeshua Jesus said, Watch!
  • 23:20 Cause the Groom is excited too!
  • 23:22 Oh, He is.
  • 23:23 The Groom is saying I'm ready,
  • 23:24 Okay Father, is the room ready?
  • 23:26 Can I go get my Bride now?
  • 23:28 And it would be so horrible for the Groom
  • 23:30 to come back and He's like,
  • 23:31 Oh, my Bride fell asleep.
  • 23:33 She couldn't wait long enough for me,
  • 23:36 and He's excited to come back.
  • 23:38 No, that's right,
  • 23:39 and I just think the whole picture here
  • 23:41 is one we picture the Church as a Bride.
  • 23:43 If there's one thing...
  • 23:45 I do quite a few weddings at our church.
  • 23:47 There's one thing with the Bride and with her mother,
  • 23:49 they're getting for a wedding.
  • 23:51 They're planning it, every detail,
  • 23:53 and its strange to see a Bride who
  • 23:56 is apathetic about what's taking place.
  • 23:58 And sleeping.
  • 23:59 That's right, and so I think
  • 24:01 here in this parable that Jesus gives to us
  • 24:04 is these Brides maids that are asleep.
  • 24:07 But I think we actually see the Bride asleep
  • 24:09 in many ways today.
  • 24:10 Again, we can't wake people up on our own.
  • 24:14 We can't make them come awake,
  • 24:15 but the Holy Spirit can do that
  • 24:17 through worship,
  • 24:18 through the Word of God,
  • 24:20 through fellowship together,
  • 24:21 and all the things that we do as we
  • 24:22 gather together every Sunday as God's people.
  • 24:24 And that's why we're doing these programs
  • 24:26 on Zola Levitt Presents
  • 24:28 because we want to tell everyone,
  • 24:29 Wake up, He's coming soon!
  • 24:31 We need to wake the Bride.
  • 24:32 Right.
  • 24:33 Right now, let's go to a Zola song.
