Episode: “The Restored Temple”
Ezekiel prophesied a restored Earth and a new Jerusalem Temple from which miraculous healing waters will spring forth. Ultimately, God’s ways are known on planet Earth. (Ezekiel 47)
Series: “Ezekiel and the MidEast “Piece” Process (2023)”
Dr. Jeffrey Seif, David, and Kirsten take viewers into one of the Bible’s most mysterious and fascinating books. Ezekiel prophesies Israel’s re-emergence as a nation-state at “day’s end,” and also warns that neighboring nation-states will marshal military resources as they seek to annihilate the fledgling state.

  • 13:28 "It was a river that I could not pass over,
  • 13:32 for the waters were risen, waters to swim in,
  • 13:36 a river that could not be passed through."
  • 13:41 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Judea was an agrarian society.
  • 13:44 And Judah's rabbis envisioned that the messianic era would
  • 13:47 come replete with verdant pastureland,
  • 13:51 that gardens would be overflowing with enormous fruit,
  • 13:55 and that's just not the wild imaginations of Judaism sages
  • 13:58 because Ezekiel envisioned that at day's end,
  • 14:02 here from Jerusalem, the temple would be rebuilt and he said
  • 14:07 that water would flow from the temple and streams would gush
  • 14:11 forth and the banks would be lined by trees that would bring
  • 14:16 forth fruit not just seasonally but monthly,
  • 14:21 big, plump, juicy fruits.
  • 14:24 And this reflects an era where God's house is rebuilt,
  • 14:27 where God's will and his ways are manifest afresh on the earth
  • 14:32 and, as a result, there's bounty plenty.
  • 14:35 Ezekiel told that story, and he wasn't alone.
  • 14:38 Isaiah in his own way, in the 2nd chapter,
  • 14:41 said, "In the latter days, the Lord's house would be made
  • 14:45 glorious," on this mountain.
  • 14:48 And after that, there's something Isaiah said that's
  • 14:50 repeated in synagogues every week all over the world:
  • 14:55 "[speaking in Hebrew]
  • 15:01 that the law will go forth from Judah and
  • 15:07 the Word of the Lord will go forth from Zion
  • 15:11 from Judah as well."
  • 15:12 What a story.
  • 15:14 Isaiah saw it in his day and told it in his way,
  • 15:18 and Ezekiel saw it as well.
  • 15:21 But before Ezekiel saw the good news,
  • 15:25 Ezekiel saw bad news. And why is that?
  • 15:29 Because Ezekiel began as a refugee.
  • 15:33 He was exiled.
  • 15:35 He was a displaced person.
  • 15:37 And if you've ever experienced divorce and you've looked at the
  • 15:40 world with uncertainty, if you've lost a job,
  • 15:44 you've looked at the world with uncertainty,
  • 15:46 if you've lost limb, you've lost health,
  • 15:49 and you've looked at the world with uncertainty,
  • 15:51 then you know what it is to be in despair.
  • 15:54 Ezekiel in his own way was there.
  • 15:57 He was taken away from Judah with some 10,000 others,
  • 16:01 displaced, taken off into captivity.
  • 16:04 And why is that?
  • 16:06 Because for a lengthy season, Judah was sinning.
  • 16:11 Judah had turned their back from God, and prophets came to tell
  • 16:16 them to mend their ways, but the people wouldn't hear it.
  • 16:20 The net result is that judgment was decreed.
  • 16:24 And so, Ezekiel was swept up in forces beyond his control,
  • 16:29 taken off in the judgment.
  • 16:31 But there, hundreds of miles away from Judah,
  • 16:37 though he was away from God's land,
  • 16:39 he wasn't away from God, and God wasn't away from him.
  • 16:43 And why do I say that?
  • 16:44 Because he says that.
  • 16:46 In Ezekiel chapter 1, verse 1: "I saw visions of God.
  • 16:54 And the hand of the LORD was upon him."
  • 16:59 He saw visions of God.
  • 17:01 God's hand was on his life, and God took him places,
  • 17:04 he caused him to see things and know things that were
  • 17:08 hidden from humans' eyes.
  • 17:11 And hence, Ezekiel was a prophet, a great prophet.
  • 17:16 He didn't just speak to his generation.

  • 23:33 And God is able to overcome the greatest of trials.
  • 23:36 That's why when we turn on the news today,
  • 23:38 we hear of Israel, God restores.
  • 23:42 Kirsten: And he restores, and I also believe and I think it
  • 23:46 was--sometimes mentioned in the book, that he
  • 23:49 wants his people and the world to know that he is Lord.
  • 23:55 He wants them to know that you may know me.
  • 23:58 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: That's true, and it's so clear
  • 23:59 in the biblical testimony.
  • 24:01 I think it's obscured a lot in the church 'cause people don't
  • 24:03 stand behind Israel because there are traditions in church
  • 24:07 that obscure that story.
  • 24:09 But in no uncertain terms, God loves the Hebrew people and he
  • 24:11 has a plan and he's watching over his Word to perform it.
  • 24:14 And it's a testimony to the world of God's
  • 24:16 strength, his keeping power.
  • 24:18 David: I think about the word that God gave Ezekiel to his
  • 24:22 people and they didn't wanna hear it.
  • 24:25 I don't know if I could do that.
  • 24:26 I'm not a prophet.
  • 24:28 Could you handle that for years, with nobody
  • 24:31 listening to what you had to say?
  • 24:32 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: I mean, when you sing a song in church
  • 24:34 or a conference, you like to see hands raised,
  • 24:37 hearts raised, and a smile on a face.
  • 24:39 You wanna know people are receiving what you're saying.
  • 24:41 It's hard to lead in worship and everyone's just sitting there,
  • 24:44 cold, never mind being explicit and telegraphing disapproval.
  • 24:48 In Ezekiel's day, they weren't just indifferent toward him.
  • 24:51 People were out and outright hostile.
  • 24:53 It's tough to keep your position emotionally,
  • 24:56 intellectually, and spiritually in that tough environment.
  • 24:59 David: When you're called, you're gonna keep going--
  • 25:01 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: You know, you've just gotta press on and
  • 25:03 keep at it and, tough assignment,
  • 25:05 yes, but God'll give us tough assignments.
  • 25:07 It's not all easy, but we know who wins at the end of the day.
  • 25:10 God is gonna make it happen, and that's good news for Jews,
  • 25:13 it's good news for yous, it's good news for all of us.
  • 25:16 Kirsten: He endured through those trials,
  • 25:18 through laying and bound and eating these cakes and doing all
  • 25:22 these crazy things, because, and I just gave myself goosebumps,
  • 25:26 because he had the vision to give to the world and to even to
  • 25:31 us today of the restoration of Israel,
  • 25:34 the restoration of humans to him,
  • 25:38 and the restoration of the earth.
  • 25:41 I mean, even animals and the land itself.
  • 25:43 So he had a huge message to give the world.
  • 25:47 He had to endure incredible trials
  • 25:49 to get that message out there.
  • 25:51 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: It's true. The message is beautiful too.
  • 25:53 I've accentuated some of the pain associated with it,
