Episode: “The Exodus”
On this program, we see the Lord as our Deliverer in both the Old and New Testaments. From the Judean wilderness and Nehemiah’s wall in the City of David, Dr. Seif illustrates how God is interested in building and rebuilding lives. The Lord can deliver you from whatever you are going through.
Series: “The God of Miracles”
We can’t go far in the Bible without encountering a miracle. When the universe was created, the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2). When all seemed hopeless, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day (Matthew 28:6). In this nine-part series, we show our miraculous God at work from Genesis to Revelation, with teachings from the Holy Land by Dr. Jeffrey Seif. We also hear testimonials from those who have experienced the Lord’s supernatural hand in their own lives.

  • 01:16 It's--certainly that whole Exodus story is the biggie in

  • 01:50 David: We're gonna hear from you right now,
  • 01:52 all the way from Israel.
  • 01:53 Here's Dr. Seif's teaching.
  • 01:56 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Sure, you're familiar with the word
  • 01:58 "Arab."
  • 01:59 I have a number of Arab friends.
  • 02:02 The word "Arab" itself derives from a word "Arabah,"
  • 02:05 which speaks of the dry lands.
  • 02:07 You can imagine why I'm mentioning that at the outset.
  • 02:10 Look at where we are.
  • 02:12 We are, indeed, in the Holy Land.
  • 02:16 We are in the Middle East, and we are in some dry land.
  • 02:22 Even in desolate places like this, in the Bible the Lord is
  • 02:27 known to do miracles.
  • 02:30 In fact, you might recall, it's noted in Exodus 17, verse 6,
  • 02:34 you can look it up, the people were crying out.
  • 02:36 Why?
  • 02:37 Because in the dry lands, they had parched thirst.
  • 02:41 Their tongues were dry and they cried out, and Moses made water
  • 02:46 to come out of a rock.
  • 02:47 Now, by the way, I'm not claiming that's the rock.
  • 02:50 In fact, I'm not even here to talk about the rock, though I do
  • 02:52 want you to know that God can bring grace and refreshment to
  • 02:56 you in difficult times.
  • 02:59 But I'm looking at the beginning of the story, not something in
  • 03:01 the middle of it.
  • 03:03 In fact, earlier in Exodus, therein we're told that Moshe
  • 03:08 Rabbeinu was tending flocks in a place like this,
  • 03:12 in the wilderness.
  • 03:13 Now, there's different gradations of dry lands.
  • 03:17 There's the absolute dry, the desert lands.
  • 03:20 Wilderness goes by another word, "midbar."
  • 03:23 The landscape is very difficult, but there are resources there.
  • 03:28 You just have to know how to survive in the land: something I
  • 03:31 couldn't do very long out here.
  • 03:33 But Moses knew the world out here and, once upon a time, he's
  • 03:38 out here, and I'm thinking of the story in Exodus chapter 3,
  • 03:44 where he's out in the wilderness.
  • 03:46 And there was this bush.
  • 03:48 Not only am I not claiming that's the rock behind me
  • 03:51 the water came out of, I'm not claiming
  • 03:53 that's the bush back there.
  • 03:55 You can see some green behind me which means
  • 03:57 there's some water source there.
  • 04:00 Moses had seen a lot out here.
  • 04:03 He needed to survive but he saw something he never saw before:
  • 04:06 a miracle.
  • 04:07 Again, a miracle is, in effect, a suspension of the laws
  • 04:10 of nature.
  • 04:11 He sees a bush that's burning, but it is not consumed.
  • 04:17 Now that would get anybody's attention, never mind the fact
  • 04:20 when you look at the story, there's a voice that comes out
  • 04:23 of the bush.
  • 04:24 We're told in the Bible in Exodus chapter 3, verse 2, that
  • 04:28 "the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from
  • 04:33 within a bush."
  • 04:35 Angel, the word "malach" from a ergative verb "lech," to send.
  • 04:40 There's a dispatch to him, and there's a word that's spoken,
  • 04:45 that's representative of the Lord, in effect, the Lord in the
  • 04:48 bush speaking to him, calling to him.
  • 04:51 And what is it that got Moses's attention?
  • 04:53 It was what we call miracle.
  • 04:58 And miracle really changed the trajectory of that man's life.
  • 05:06 It took him into things he'd never imagined.
  • 05:09 And you know, that's not just something that God does for
  • 05:12 Bible people way back then on the pages.
  • 05:16 It's done throughout the ages.
  • 05:18 People have an experience with the divine, a message of the
  • 05:22 Lord, associated with supernatural.
  • 05:25 You find it in Genesis, all the way through Revelation.
  • 05:29 And beyond the pages of Revelation, we find it in the
  • 05:32 world today as God is watching over his Word to perform it and
  • 05:37 doing signs and wonders in the process.
  • 05:40 It's all about miracles, and I want you to know that God may
  • 05:43 have a miracle for you even yet.
  • 05:49 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Our viewers send me to fascinating places.
  • 05:52 Here, just south of the City of David, across from the Kidron
  • 05:56 Valley, where here, a remnant of Nehemiah's wall.
  • 06:02 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: "Stony the road we trod," is the theme song
  • 06:07 for the NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement
  • 06:12 of Colored People.
  • 06:13 I mention that here 'cause I thought of it just getting to
  • 06:16 this place right here.
  • 06:17 Stony is the road our camera crew trod.
  • 06:21 And it's very precarious, by the way.
  • 06:23 It's not on camera right now but there's a precipice just right
  • 06:26 next to me.
  • 06:28 I don't wanna get anywhere near it 'cause it's a long drop to
  • 06:30 the bottom.
  • 06:31 Well, I didn't bring you here to tell you about my problems.
  • 06:34 I wanna talk to you about that wall because, behind me, is
  • 06:37 proof positive that supports a biblical narrative.
  • 06:42 And Nechemia, Nehemiah, whose name means God comforts,
  • 06:46 returned to the ancestral homeland many years ago and
  • 06:49 built a wall, against all odds.
  • 06:52 And there were all kinds of obstacles,
  • 06:53 but he got to the task.
  • 06:55 It's right behind me.
  • 06:57 Isn't that fascinating?
  • 06:59 It's one of the beauties of biblical archeology.
  • 07:01 It was a field that was under-developed 'til 150 or so
  • 07:05 years ago, and now you can come to the land and dig it all up.
  • 07:09 Not just in Israel, but Greece and Turkey and elsewhere, and
  • 07:13 there are different ways that it corroborates the Bible story.
  • 07:17 Well, in this series, in particular, I'm interested, as
  • 07:19 you know, in talking about miracles and I like the Nehemiah
  • 07:24 text in part because there's an example of getting on board with
  • 07:29 the miracle that God is doing.
  • 07:31 Nechemia, in his day, going back to the beginning of his book,
  • 07:35 was chagrined because God had providentially afforded an
  • 07:38 opportunity for Judeans to return to the ancestral
  • 07:42 homeland, but he was chagrined because things were in a
  • 07:45 deplorable state.
  • 07:47 There was a miracle, but it wasn't being developed.
  • 07:49 He came back and got to developing it, and foremost of
  • 07:53 his tasks, at least initially, was constructing this wall
  • 07:56 behind me.
  • 07:58 Nehemiah's exemplary for a variety of reasons, one of which
  • 08:01 is his servant leadership.
  • 08:03 This is noted in chapter 2, by the way, in verse 17 when he
  • 08:10 gives voice to the fact at the outset: "Things are really in a
  • 08:13 bad situation.
  • 08:15 Don't you see it?"
  • 08:16 And indeed, they did.
  • 08:18 And he says, "[speaking in Hebrew]
  • 08:19 Come!
  • 08:21 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 08:22 Come, build the wall."
  • 08:26 And there was a miracle that God had afforded the opportunity for
  • 08:29 them to return to the ancestral homeland, but there was still
  • 08:33 work to be done once they got there.
  • 08:38 I think that's where people trip up in part.
  • 08:40 Even those of us that believe in miracles, sometimes neglect the
  • 08:43 fact of our own participation in what God, in fact, is doing.
  • 08:49 The verse begins in verse 17, he says, "Come on, you see the bad
  • 08:55 situation we are in."
  • 08:58 Well, from their vantage point, you know, the city was in ruins
  • 09:02 and there were enemies round about, you know, that something
  • 09:04 needed to be done.
  • 09:06 And the problem was, is that even those who'd returned under
  • 09:09 Zerubbabel and Ezra, the initial returnees, they kind of
  • 09:15 neglected the things of the Lord and got busy building
  • 09:17 up their own business.
  • 09:19 The capital city was in ruins still,
  • 09:22 certainly the wall around it.
  • 09:24 There was no protection.
  • 09:25 And he says, "Look, c'mon, you see the bad situation we're in,"
  • 09:29 and there's that leadership, "C'mon, let's build."
  • 09:33 It's one of the things, by the way, I like about Peter.
  • 09:35 I like Peter because he's, "C'mon, guys."
  • 09:38 He's, "Let's go." It takes that, you know.
  • 09:42 C'mon, bringing someone to church, you know, someone's in a
  • 09:45 bad way, they need to turn around in their life, it's not
  • 09:49 just telling them, "You need to turn around in your life,"
  • 09:52 it's, "C'mon, come with me. Come."
  • 09:54 Lead 'em to a place of prayer or just lead 'em to prayer.
  • 09:58 I mean, don't be ashamed to do that.
  • 10:00 He says, "Come, let's do this," and he finishes, "So that we may
  • 10:04 no longer be a disgrace."
  • 10:09 Again, people can find themselves in abysmal
  • 10:12 circumstances, but God works through
  • 10:15 that entrepreneurial spirit.
  • 10:17 He's watching over his word to perform it, and he's working
  • 10:22 through people in the performance.
  • 10:25 I think, by the way, when I look at those wall blocks behind me,
  • 10:30 I'm glad I wasn't around to build 'em back then.
  • 10:32 It's tough work, arduous work.
  • 10:35 It's hot out now, just sitting in the sun, telling the story,
  • 10:38 never mind making the story behind me that was made
  • 10:41 thousands of years ago.
  • 10:43 But sometimes, it takes that rolling up the sleeves and get
  • 10:45 to work, and take this as a little chiding, if you need it.
  • 10:49 I want you to know that God blesses but he's more prone to
  • 10:54 work with people that are active in the enterprise as opposed
  • 10:58 that are passive.
  • 11:00 To underscore the point, it's not just a dogged determination
  • 11:03 and human enterprise.
  • 11:05 We're told in verse 18 of chapter 2, he says in the
  • 11:08 Hebrew, "[speaking in Hebrew]
  • 11:11 And I told them," that is Nehemiah speaking,
  • 11:13 "[speaking in Hebrew]
  • 11:16 that the hand of my God [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 11:19 which was for good [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 11:22 was upon me."
  • 11:24 He gives voice to the fact it's the hand of the Lord that was
  • 11:30 upon him.
  • 11:32 Now that's what's called an anthropomorphism, that is to say
  • 11:33 anthro, man, morphe, God, you know, the hand of God is a
  • 11:38 poetic figure of speech.
  • 11:40 But that's what we want.
  • 11:42 A miracle comes from that.
  • 11:45 We're told in the Bible that the Lord reached out
  • 11:48 and touched them.
  • 11:50 There's a miracle touch.
  • 11:52 The hand of God involved in the enterprise.
  • 11:56 And by the way, the hand of God isn't just involved in stones
  • 11:59 and sticks and bricks and construction.
  • 12:02 Even more than all that, he's interested in building and
  • 12:05 rebuilding human lives.
  • 12:12 And I want you to know whoever you are, wherever you are,
  • 12:14 there's nothing that can't get turned around when the hand of
  • 12:18 the Lord is upon.
  • 12:21 Bear with this brief word from Nechemia, Nehemiah, who said,
  • 12:24 "Come, let's go.
  • 12:27 God's here."
  • 12:28 I hope this serves as a little stirring if you need it.
  • 12:30 I want you to know there is great hope for the future and
  • 12:34 the reason why that is because God does miracles even today.

  • 15:21 "Well, they look like trees walking."
  • 15:23 And then he does another, and then he sees clearly.
  • 15:26 In other words, it's incremental.
  • 15:28 That's what's happening here in the Nehemiah story.
  • 15:31 This thing is pacing out, and individuals are beckoned to

  • 15:37 Kirsten: And I think there's something in us.
  • 15:39 There is a satisfaction, should I say, of doing what we can.
  • 15:44 I mean, God could have built Nehemiah's wall.
  • 15:47 He could have, bam, and the wall's up, but our participation

  • 18:47 Israel of miracle is not if you believe in miracles or if you
  • 18:51 don't believe in miracles.
  • 18:52 The question is can you live without miracles?
  • 18:57 If you live in the Middle East, and if you see what is going on
  • 19:01 in Israel, but if you believe that there is a God, you have to
  • 19:04 believe in miracles because if you don't believe in miracles,
  • 19:09 you-- wrong because you cannot survive in this country.
  • 19:13 We, as Israel, we cannot survive without a miracle of God.
  • 19:17 I believe that the whole return of the Jewish people
  • 19:18 is a miracle.
  • 19:20 I believe sustaining 70-something years here in the
  • 19:23 lands, soon 75 years in the land, is a miracle.
  • 19:27 When you walk on the streets of Israel, and you look around and
  • 19:32 you see where the Israeli society is, where Israeli
  • 19:34 economy is, where is the Israeli technology,
  • 19:38 everything about Israel is a miracle.
  • 19:42 And you know, I grew up in a Messianic family.
  • 19:44 Both my parents came from Tunisia, North Africa.
  • 19:47 They started the Messianic movement in this country with
  • 19:52 some other brothers and sister.
  • 19:56 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: So original pioneers.
  • 19:58 Sam: Original pioneers.
  • 20:00 Both my parents, we're talking about the--at the end of the
  • 20:02 '50s, 1956, they came here.
  • 20:05 My father was a real pioneer and for those who know what pioneer
  • 20:08 means, pioneer is somebody that, when there is a wall and there
  • 20:12 is a door, he chooses to go headfirst through the wall, even
  • 20:16 if there is a door, because he believes he needs to get to the
  • 20:19 other side.
  • 20:20 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yeah, now there's a movement of Messianic
  • 20:21 Jews in Israel.
  • 20:23 Back in his day, you could count 'em on your hands.
  • 20:25 Sam: Yeah, when my parents came, there were maybe 20 Jewish
  • 20:28 believers in this whole country.
  • 20:31 So, growing up in this environment and seeing where the
  • 20:34 movement is today, I can tell you that's another miracle.
  • 20:39 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: So you've discussed the emergence of the
  • 20:41 modern nation state and pivoted to the emergence of Messianic
  • 20:45 Jewish experience in the state.
  • 20:48 Miracles both in their own right, to be sure.
  • 20:50 What about your own life?
  • 20:51 What resonates with you, when you personally think of miracle?
  • 20:54 Sam: When I look upon my life, it's a story of miracle
  • 20:58 combined with the grace of God.
  • 21:01 As I said, I grew up in this house.
  • 21:03 I grew up dyslexic. I could hardly spell my name.
  • 21:08 My father forced me to stay in school just for the sake
  • 21:11 of staying in school.
  • 21:14 I graduated but they put me in a class of girls, 'cause I was not
  • 21:17 good in anything, of tourism.
  • 21:21 But I flunk.
  • 21:23 So I went to look for a job as a tour operator.
  • 21:25 Everywhere I went, they asked me, "Can you write in English?"
  • 21:28 I said, "No."
  • 21:29 I went through all the agencies in Israel--in Jerusalem, sorry,
  • 21:33 'til I got to a very small, tiny agency, a three-people agency.
  • 21:39 And I went to the guy and I say, "I came for to work for a job--I
  • 21:43 came to look for a job, but I'll work for you for free.
  • 21:47 And if I'll make money, we'll share the profit."
  • 21:49 He looked at me and says, "Are you sure?
  • 21:52 'Cause there's no free meals in Israel.
  • 21:55 What do you mean, you'll work for me for free?"
  • 21:57 So I work for this guy for free for 2 years.
  • 22:00 After 7 years, my department became bigger than his office.
  • 22:05 So that was a miracle.
  • 22:08 It's like, I cannot tell you, I didn't have any business plan.
  • 22:12 I didn't know what I was doing, but everything
  • 22:14 I touched turn into gold.
  • 22:18 It's really the favor of God. It's, really, it's a miracle.
  • 22:23 After being with the gentleman for 7 years, he
  • 22:26 came to me and he says, "I think it's time for you to open
  • 22:28 your own company."
  • 22:30 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: You're a guy that couldn't put a sentence

  • 22:40 Beyond that, in construction you're putting a luxury

  • 23:08 You went from not being able to get a job in a tour company, to

  • 23:16 Sam: That's why I believe in miracle.
