• 01:04 Joshua Colson: I'm Joshua. Caleb Colson: And I'm Caleb.

• 01:08 Caleb: Welcome, friends.
• 01:09 David: Joshua, Caleb, not only is that your name but
• 01:11 also the Bearded Bible Brothers.
• 01:13 Caleb: Yeah.
• 01:14 David: They are with us now full time around this table.
• 01:17 We're really glad to have you guys with
• 01:19 all your insight, your wisdom.
• 01:21 It's been a great series.
• 01:23 Joshua: It's been amazing.
• 01:24 David: We're at the end of our program.
• 01:25 It's all about Joshua. Joshua, hey, speaking of.
• 01:28 Joshua: Yes, ma'am.
• 01:29 Kirsten: And I had this revelation.
• 01:31 You're sitting here, but you're also
• 01:33 in the dramatic reenactment.
• 01:34 So today is your farewell address in the dramatic
• 01:38 reenactment, right?
• 01:39 I mean, that's so neat.
• 01:41 Joshua: Well, it's funny, I mean, Joshua,
• 01:43 his whole life is spent to try to achieve this
• 01:45 thing that he understands that he's supposed to do, and then it
• 01:48 comes to the end of his life, and he doesn't get to do that.
• 01:51 I mean, I actually, when I was playing this part, I connected
• 01:55 so well with that concept.
• 01:56 I have these hopes in the dreams that God's placed in my heart
• 01:59 that have yet to be discovered and fulfilled, and so, as
• 02:02 Joshua's going through all this, he's facing all this opposition,
• 02:05 and he's standing for truth, and at the very end, it still hasn't
• 02:07 happened yet, but there's more to the story because God still
• 02:11 has Israel at his heart, and he still wants them to succeed.
• 02:15 And it's gonna be an interesting story today
• 02:17 to see this farewell.
• 02:18 Kirsten: So now we get to go to see you from set
• 02:20 to the dramatic reenactment.
• 02:23 Here's Joshua, Joshua's farewell address.
• 02:29 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: After 40 long years in the wilderness,
• 02:32 the children of Israel have found their home
• 02:33 in the Promised Land.
• 02:36 The boundaries of the tribes have been determined, and Joshua
• 02:39 has summoned the people together to give his farewell address.
• 02:45 Joshua: It was the Lord our God who brought us and our
• 02:49 parents up out of Egypt from the land of slavery and performed
• 02:55 those great signs before our eyes.
• 02:58 He protected us on our entire journey and among all
• 03:03 the nations through which we traveled.
• 03:06 And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the
• 03:10 Amorites, who lived in the land.
• 03:14 One of you routes a thousand because the Lord your God fights
• 03:18 for you as he promised.
• 03:21 Then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.
• 03:26 Put away the foreign gods that are among you, and yield
• 03:31 your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.
• 03:38 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Joshua's voice will long be remembered,
• 03:40 his leadership unmatched.
• 03:42 What remains after his death at the age of 110 are detailed
• 03:46 accounts of battles won and covenants confirmed.
• 03:51 Road maps to and through the Land of Promise
• 03:54 are noted as well.
• 03:58 male: Here's his plan for Jericho and a map on the taking
• 04:03 of Ai, battle plans for kingdoms to the south and the north;
• 04:10 another map, a recent one,
• 04:13 showing the boundaries of our tribes.
• 04:17 male: It is a treasure.
• 04:20 His victories, his losses, his dreams, they're all here,
• 04:27 and his final bidding as well.
• 04:31 male: And may we never forget it.
• 04:34 Joshua's covenant with the house of Israel.
• 04:38 It appears he recorded every single word.
• 04:43 male: Joshua was just the messenger.
• 04:45 Clearly, the words are from Adonai.
• 04:48 male: Here, his address of farewell:
• 04:52 "Thus says the Lord God of Israel,
• 04:55 'I took your father Abraham and led him through
• 04:58 the land of Canaan and multiplied his seed.
• 05:01 To Isaac, I gave Jacob and Esau.
• 05:04 To Esau, I gave the mountains of Seir,
• 05:07 but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.'"
• 05:10 male: Egypt.
• 05:13 He never wanted us to forget it how Moses led us away from the
• 05:18 hand of the Pharaoh, the miracle of the Red Sea.
• 05:22 male: Yes, and he continues on about Adonai's faithfulness
• 05:28 as we approached Canaan.
• 05:32 "Then you went over the Jordan," ah, "defeat of the Amorites,
• 05:38 defeat of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Jebusites."
• 05:44 male: But it was not with the sword
• 05:45 that we defeated the Amorites.
• 05:48 Joshua wanted us to know it was Adonai's might, not ours.
• 05:55 "I have given you a land for which you did not labor,
• 06:00 cities that you did not build.
• 06:03 You eat of the vineyards and the olive groves
• 06:06 that you did not plant."
• 06:09 male: May we never forget his final commission:
• 06:13 "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,
• 06:17 the Lord or the gods of the land you live in."
• 06:21 male: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
• 06:26 male: And we agreed.
• 06:28 The entire house of Israel agreed.
• 06:31 The Lord Adonai is our only God.
• 06:34 We will obey and serve only him.
• 06:37 male: And be faithful to the covenant with hearts
• 06:41 that are pure.
• 06:44 male: With Joshua gone, do you really think it's possible?
• 06:47 male: Our children will know.
• 06:51 I pray those who follow us will recall how faithful Adonai was
• 06:56 despite our shortcomings.
• 07:02 Lord God of Israel, may the generations yet to come remember
• 07:08 this covenant and our pledge before you.
• 07:12 May they understand how blessed they are because
• 07:15 of what happened here.
• 07:18 May they never forget these marvelous days of Joshua and of
• 07:23 your hand that led us to this magnificent Land of Promise.
• 07:32 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: The prayers of gratitude offered 3,300 years
• 07:35 ago still ring true here in the Land of Promise.
• 07:40 We came to Timnath-heres, in the very heartland of Israel, to
• 07:44 consider the legacy of the man whose strategic command led the
• 07:48 children of Israel from the banks of the Jordan to the
• 07:51 miracle that is now the state of Israel.
• 07:56 It is here that Joshua was finally laid to rest in
• 08:00 the hills of the land he loved so much,
• 08:03 the area allotted to his tribe, Ephraim.
• 08:09 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: It's a beautiful land,
• 08:11 and you can see it behind me, and it's all around me.
• 08:16 And I know that the children of Israel were thrilled to be here
• 08:20 and thankful that Joshua was the one who led them in here.
• 08:27 But now it's time to say good-bye, as they say.
• 08:33 Good-bye was the order of the day with Joshua.
• 08:36 He ran his course and served Israel well, and he closes the
• 08:42 book by recapping all of that, and I wanna alight upon some of
• 08:47 that as well here, from the area of Timnath-Serah, a beautiful
• 08:52 place where Joshua made his resting place.
• 08:58 He, for a certain period of time, belonged to humanity, but
• 09:02 now he belongs to history and is remembered through his writings
• 09:07 and through the legacy that
• 09:09 he left of faithfulness to the Lord.
• 09:13 That was attested early on in how he stayed with Moses
• 09:17 and served him.
• 09:19 Both as a military man he served him; he served him as
• 09:23 an attendant in the sanctuary.
• 09:27 He was just a go-to guy, and inasmuch as he was a go-to guy
• 09:32 to serve Moses, finally, then, the mantle of leadership went to
• 09:36 him, and he used his influence not to serve the
• 09:41 "man of the Lord," Moses, but the people of the Lord.
• 09:44 And so it is, he ran his course as a leader through valleys and
• 09:50 mountaintops, and he came to proximity to this place where
• 09:55 he made his resting place.
• 09:59 We pick up with the finale of Joshua in his--
• 10:03 the book that bears his name.
• 10:04 In the 24th chapter, we read,
• 10:08 "And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem,"
• 10:15 an interesting place.
• 10:17 In fact, that's where the promise began.
• 10:19 I say that because, back in Bereshit, in Genesis,
• 10:23 the 12th chapter, the gifting of the real estate, the promise of
• 10:31 the land is articulated, so he brings them to the place where
• 10:36 the promise was first promised, and there, among other things,
• 10:41 he recapped the story of God's faithfulness to them in so many
• 10:46 ways through so many days,
• 10:49 and he exhorted them to walk with the Lord.
• 10:52 In fact, you go to verse 14, and I'll be kind of working my way
• 10:58 through the text, he says,
• 11:00 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 11:08 "Now therefore," he says, "fear the Lord."
• 11:12 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 11:13 It means to revere him, to take him seriously,
• 11:17 "And serve him," he says "In sincerity and truth."
• 11:24 It's a beautiful exhortation, and he doesn't just stop there.
• 11:28 He goes on to say something that he's well known for.
• 11:34 Right thereafter, in verse 15, he says,
• 11:37 "Choose this day whom you shall serve."
• 11:39 That is to say, individuals have to make a choice.
• 11:44 Joshua made that choice.
• 11:47 People need to have an internal locus of control.
• 11:50 That is to say, we make executive decisions, and with
• 11:54 those decisions, we decide how we're gonna live our lives.
• 11:57 He says, "You make that choice."
• 11:59 He finishes up the verse with a very famous line in Hebrew.
• 12:05 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 12:09 Famous verse.
• 12:11 He says, "Me," ani, "And my house, we will serve the Lord."
• 12:18 When he thinks of "house," we're not talking about sticks and
• 12:20 bricks and an address on the street somewhere.
• 12:23 It's "household."
• 12:25 That is to say, he's made his mark, and not only as he made
• 12:30 his mark as an individual, but he is inculcating that faith
• 12:35 and virtue within his immediate web of relationship.
• 12:40 He made that decision, "Me and my house,
• 12:44 we will serve the Lord."
• 12:46 And I should say, parenthetically,
• 12:47 that's not simply a case of
• 12:49 "Well, we're gonna go to church on Saturday,"
• 12:51 you know, or Sunday, there were no synagogue services
• 12:54 to go to back then.
• 12:55 It's not being pious in the sense of religious attendance at
• 13:00 worship places and spaces, and I'm not tryin'
• 13:03 to minimalize that, much as it is serving the Lord.
• 13:08 There's a code.
• 13:10 There's an ethical code to be at Tzedeq.
• 13:14 Tzedakah is the Hebrew word for "righteousness."
• 13:16 It's also the word for charity, that is to say,
• 13:19 caring and sharing about others.
• 13:21 "We will serve the Lord," that is to say,
• 13:24 "We'll place a premium on doing his bidding,
• 13:28 on being his hands and his feet.
• 13:32 We'll go where he leads us to go,
• 13:34 and we'll do what he beckons us to do.
• 13:36 We will serve the Lord."
• 13:38 And that's what it was then, and we would do well
• 13:41 to recover it today.
• 13:44 Simply put, today, many of us say,
• 13:46 "Well, yeah, we serve the Lord, we go to church
• 13:47 on Sunday, and, yeah, you know, if the message
• 13:51 is good, I'll throw a few bucks in the plate."
• 13:53 I'm not trying to disparage giving and attending as much as
• 13:56 to say this "serving the Lord" harks to an executive decision
• 14:01 that, I'm gonna invest my energies and life not just to
• 14:05 contribute to my own concerns but mindful of God that I wanna
• 14:10 make sure that, "His kingdom come and his
• 14:13 will is going to be done on earth as it is in heaven."
• 14:16 And, friend, if we do that like Joshua,
• 14:20 we'll be more than a conqueror.
• 14:23 ♪♪♪
• 14:31 David: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,"
• 14:34 something that we practice every day.
• 14:37 Caleb: That's true, you know, everybody knows
• 14:40 that line from Joshua's farewell
• 14:42 address, but most of that address, he was kind of scolding
• 14:43 the Israelites, saying, this is years
• 14:46 after they took most of the land.
• 14:48 He dispersed them to their tribal territories to clean
• 14:51 out all the squatters.
• 14:52 They didn't fulfill the word of the Lord.
• 14:54 He's like, "What are y'all guys doin'?"
• 14:56 Joshua: Imagine stepping up as a leader to a doomed project.
• 15:00 He knew from the very beginning that this was gonna fail,
• 15:02 and yet, he did everything he possibly could to succeed
• 15:06 with what God told him.
• 15:08 Way back when, before, when Moses was gonna hand over the
• 15:11 mantle, God had a meeting with Moses and Joshua, and you can
• 15:13 read here in Deuteronomy 31, verse 16 and 17,
• 15:16 "Then the Lord told Moses,
• 15:18 'Look! You are about to join your ancestors.
• 15:20 Afterwards, this people will rebel and commit prostitution
• 15:23 with foreign gods of the land that they
• 15:25 are about to enter to possess.
• 15:27 They will abandon me and break my covenant
• 15:28 that I made with them.
• 15:30 When that happens, my anger will burst against them,
• 15:33 because they will have abandoned me.
• 15:35 I'll hide my face from them, and they will be consumed,
• 15:38 and many evils and distresses will find them.'"
• 15:40 Caleb: So that was before Joshua took over the job.
• 15:43 God said, "All right, Joshua.
• 15:44 You're takin' over, but guess what?
• 15:46 Your people are gonna fail."
• 15:47 I think that's heavy, man, having that
• 15:49 weighing on--I'm sure that weighed on Joshua
• 15:52 most of his life, thinking, "What can I do?
• 15:54 How can I use every moment and every opportunity to change
• 15:58 this, to change the future, if you will?"
• 16:01 I think he did a pretty good job.
• 16:03 Joshua: And I believe that's why,
• 16:04 in his farewell address, he says,
• 16:05 "I can't control what you're about to do now, but I
• 16:09 can assure you, as for me and my house, we are going to serve
• 16:12 the Lord with every breath, with every last moment,"
• 16:16 because he knew that not doing that was going to lead
• 16:20 to really bad things for a long time.
• 16:22 Caleb: Yes.
• 16:23 Well, Jeff's gonna continue teaching about Joshua's
• 16:26 final days and his farewell address.
• 16:29 We'll join him now.
• 16:31 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: While individuals need to decide to
• 16:34 serve the Lord individually, the means by which we do that is not
• 16:38 determined individually, and thus I have
• 16:41 some paraphernalia in front of me.
• 16:43 The menorah reminds us of the Creator God
• 16:46 who did it in seven days.
• 16:48 And the tallis here is a powerful reminder in the Jewish
• 16:53 people, among the Jewish people, that is, of serving the Lord,
• 16:58 and the reason why I note that is because the way it's designed
• 17:03 itself harks to the commandments of the Lord.
• 17:07 The tzitzit, the fringes, are a reminder to keep the Sabbath,
• 17:11 and there are other things built into this, which I won't
• 17:13 describe, that speak of putting on the commandments,
• 17:18 putting on the instructions, living within that.
• 17:22 In the Bible, Paul is referred to as a tent maker.
• 17:25 He probably made these.
• 17:27 I don't think he had a contract with Boy Scouts of America to
• 17:29 heave out a lot of canvas, but Hebrew people live
• 17:33 and worship in these tents.
• 17:36 In fact, even Paul talks about
• 17:38 "putting on the whole armor of God,"
• 17:41 and there's a cogent argument that he's referencing
• 17:44 to being compliant to the teachings in the covenant.
• 17:48 Well, in any case, you heard me in the previous segment give
• 17:51 voice to the fact that Joshua had an internal locus
• 17:55 of control, and he, as an individual, decided to use his
• 17:59 influence for godly purposes, and he was minded to inculcate
• 18:03 that into his immediate family.
• 18:06 We see, as well, that the individuals that he's talking to
• 18:09 similarly buy into that particular vision.
• 18:13 I mention that because, in verse 18, they say as much.
• 18:18 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 18:23 "We will serve the Lord," they say,
• 18:27 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 18:29 That is, "For he is our God."
• 18:32 See, if you have someone who's very direct, and there's some
• 18:37 forceful about it, if you will, then that has a way
• 18:40 of inculcating biblical virtues in those in proximity.
• 18:46 If you have the man of the house in a household who's rather
• 18:49 sheepish about religious things, that casual nature then trickles
• 18:54 down through the family system.
• 18:56 Better to have resolve, and then you see that it goes somewhere.
• 19:01 And here, the people say, as much,
• 19:03 "Joshua, we're going to do it with you."
• 19:05 And, again, in verse 24, "The people said,
• 19:09 'The Lord our God we will serve.
• 19:12 We will serve him, and his voice we will hearken.
• 19:18 His voice we will listen to.'"
• 19:21 And I'll tell ya that Joshua had something to do with that.
• 19:28 We get out of the story in verse 31,
• 19:31 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 19:37 The author says,
• 19:38 "Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua."
• 19:45 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 19:53 "And all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua."
• 19:59 The man left a mark.
• 20:03 The man left a legacy.
• 20:05 The man had influence.
• 20:09 And why is that?
• 20:11 What can we learn from that?
• 20:14 The reason why he left an influence is because he was
• 20:18 doggedly determined himself to serve the Lord.
• 20:21 This is evidenced throughout his life.
• 20:23 This was evidenced before he ever became a man
• 20:26 of such powerful influence.
• 20:29 He was an able servant of the Lord, and that's attested
• 20:33 in his earlier years with Moses as an assistant.
• 20:36 And, similarly, subsequent to that, when the mantle
• 20:39 came on him, he was doggedly determined to serve the Lord.
• 20:44 And that's evidenced by the way he finished up.
• 20:47 Even by coming here, to Timnath-Serah, it's an outpost.
• 20:52 You know, a lot of times, when people become very
• 20:54 successful, and if you take the literature literally, he has
• 20:58 some two million people in tow, and he's the macher, you know,
• 21:02 he's the big shot, a lot of these people leave a legacy in
• 21:06 wealth and monuments, but he had none of that.
• 21:09 He retired to a humble place, to a simple life, and he's known
• 21:15 not by the wealth, not by the power that came forth after him
• 21:19 but by the influence that he carried with him while he made
• 21:23 his journey from the womb to the tomb.
• 21:26 This was a man who wanted to make a difference in his
• 21:30 generation, and what he left for subsequent generations is
• 21:34 a memory, not a fortune, not a castle.
• 21:39 There's no big monuments built to him.
• 21:41 He died humbly as did his boss.
• 21:45 Moshe Rabbeinu similarly ran his course, and his burial place
• 21:51 we know not to this day.
• 21:54 While we know where Joshua finished up, we know it because
• 21:57 the text says as much, but, again,
• 21:59 he didn't leave a fancy monument.
• 22:02 The text says, in verse 29, and I'm finishing up
• 22:04 by backing up a little.
• 22:06 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 22:09 "And after these things, the,
• 22:12 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 22:14 Joshua, the servant of the Lord, died."
• 22:19 Finishes up like that, noting he was 110 years old.
• 22:24 Listen, I wanna thank you for going on the journey with me as
• 22:29 we, together, explored the life of one of the greats, and I hope
• 22:37 the experience will contribute to your own understanding
• 22:41 of what greatness will look like for you, faithfulness
• 22:45 to the Lord, faithfulness to his purposes.
• 22:49 If you serve the Lord well, you'll find it's reciprocal.
• 22:53 It'll come back to you thirtyfold, sixtyfold,
• 22:56 and a hundredfold.
• 22:58 And, yes, you, even you, like Joshua,
• 23:02 can be more than a conqueror.
• 23:07 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: I had the opportunity to sit down and talk
• 23:09 to Chaim Malespin, a friend, a leader
• 23:12 in the Israeli Defense Forces.
• 23:14 Let's look and see what he had to say.
• 23:16 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Chaim, great to be with you today.
• 23:18 Chaim Malespin: Good to be here.
• 23:19 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: And you remind me of Joshua.
• 23:22 Ask me why.
• 23:24 Chaim: Well, why is that?
• 23:25 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Well, funny you should ask, and I'll tell ya
• 23:26 because, in the Bible, Joshua led those people into the land.
• 23:32 Helped 'em get into the Promised Land.
• 23:34 You're doing the very same thing through your ministry.
• 23:38 Can you talk to us about what you're doing up in the Galilee?
• 23:41 Chaim: Well, yes, the Aliyah Return Center.
• 23:43 "Aliyah" means that very entrance to
• 23:45 the Promised Land just like Joshua did.
• 23:47 We're positioned right on the Jordan River.
• 23:49 You remember where he took those 12 stones and made a monument,
• 23:51 one for each tribe?
• 23:54 That's what we're seeing is that God's regathering his people
• 23:56 right now, just as he said he'd do.
• 23:58 There's 64 key Scriptures that are happening right now,
• 24:01 out of the large wealth of 700 Scriptures, promises of this
• 24:05 return that we're able to facilitate there.
• 24:07 We have, of course, the Lone Soldier Program.
• 24:09 Those people came here without their family.
• 24:11 You got the agricultural school.
• 24:12 They gotta learn how to work the land.
• 24:14 Of course, we have the pre-army training academy and welcome
• 24:16 volunteers from all over the world.
• 24:18 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: There's a lot of formidable obstacles.
• 24:20 Joshua had 'em, and I guess you have 'em too.
• 24:22 What are they?
• 24:24 Chaim: People, when they come to what would be a foreign land
• 24:26 to them, they need to learn Hebrew.
• 24:28 "How do I get a job, I have to go to the army,
• 24:30 I have to be trained for that.
• 24:31 My, oh, my, how do I get married?
• 24:32 How do I sign an apartment?"
• 24:34 You know, these are the giants in the land, not as scary as
• 24:36 Goliath but certainly are some formidable enemies to God's plan
• 24:40 of, "I will plant them in the land,
• 24:42 with all My heart and all My soul,"
• 24:43 Jeremiah 32, verse 41.
• 24:45 We're in the most exciting time
• 24:46 since the resurrection of Yeshua.
• 24:48 We are seeing the Ezekiel 36 happen where the new heart
• 24:53 will come, a heart of stone out; heart of flesh in, and that
• 24:56 all has to do with their great ingathering.
• 24:58 Thank you for participating with me in the vision that God has
• 25:01 for the restoration.
