Episode: “At the Jordan”
Joshua succeeds Moses as leader of the Israelites as they prepare to cross the Jordan River to battle for the Promised Land. God demonstrates that He will be with Joshua just as He was with Moses.
Series: “Joshua”
More than a Conqueror
In this series we examine how Joshua went from a dependable apprentice to the faithful leader of Israel during the conquering of the land of Canaan, a land promised by God to the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Many valuable leadership lessons can be learned from Joshua’s story taught by Dr. Jeffrey Seif from corresponding locations in Israel. David and Kirsten Hart discuss the meaning and application with Dr. Seif as we see dramatic reenactments of some of the key moments in Joshua’s life.

Note: A newer version of this series is available.

  • 10:02 think it's discouragement, that is to suck courage out.
  • 10:07 By way of contra-distinction, biblical literature encourages.
  • 10:11 That is to say, infuses with courage because it takes that
  • 10:15 in order to move forward in life.
  • 10:18 And I believe personally that it's Yeshua, it's Jesus,
  • 10:23 who gives us a kind of courage to face the future.

  • 11:01 And then we have the good Lord who enables us to get

  • 11:13 and the angel of the Lord says, "Look, you know, I'm here,
  • 11:16 the captain of the Lord of hosts.
  • 11:19 I'm gonna be with you."
  • 11:20 I think it's fascinating, by the way, in the Bible there's
  • 11:23 the term "the Lord of hosts, Adonai Tsevaot."
  • 11:26 Famous expression: "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh Adonai Tsevaot."
  • 11:29 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.
  • 11:31 That is, the Lord of the armies.
  • 11:33 And I don't mean that in a military sense as much
  • 11:35 as a spiritual sense.
  • 11:37 You know, when Yeshua was on the cross he said, "I could pray

  • 14:13 There's a Talmudic saying that the righteous

  • 14:33 got after it immediately.
  • 14:35 It's time to do God's work.
  • 14:36 Let's get on to it, you know, before our head starts spinning
  • 14:39 and the devil talks us out of it.
  • 14:41 You know, fear will do that.
  • 14:42 In any case, I know that Joshua had a certain fearful proclivity
  • 14:46 and he had to put that behind him to get after it,
  • 14:49 and he gets up in the morning and he does it.
  • 14:51 He goes for it.
  • 14:53 The reason why I know that he had a fearful proclivity
  • 14:54 is because over, and again, he's encouraged,
  • 14:56 "Fear not, fear not, fear not."
  • 14:59 And if he's told that over and again, that means he had it.
  • 15:02 And there's a point there.
  • 15:03 If Joshua can be fearful and still be more than a conqueror,
  • 15:06 then even that fear resides within us isn't a deal killer
  • 15:09 for us being more than a conqueror.
  • 15:11 We just have to listen to the faith, not to the feelings.
  • 15:14 And here, as noted, Joshua does just that.
  • 15:18 I love a passage in chapter 3, verse 5, where Joshua says
  • 15:22 to the people, "Sanctify yourselves."
  • 15:26 He says to do that "for tomorrow the Lord
  • 15:28 will do wonders among you."
  • 15:31 The word in the Hebrew, kadosh, you know,
  • 15:33 to make yourself holy, to set yourself apart,
  • 15:37 in order to see God do something through you, something to you,
  • 15:41 for you, and through you.
  • 15:43 Today, churches, I get it, you know, we wanna have different
  • 15:47 programs to attract more and more people but people really
  • 15:50 need to experience God at work in their life, a saving hand
  • 15:53 from heaven, and for that there is, "Sanctify here," he says,
  • 15:58 and then he goes on to say in verse 7, inasmuch as he said,
  • 16:01 "Sanctify" before, then he says, "This day will I begin
  • 16:05 to magnify you in the sight of all Israel."
  • 16:10 Actually, it's the Lord talking to Joshua.
  • 16:13 You know, Joshua was ordained and--but there needed to be
  • 16:17 something miraculous, heaven's help,
  • 16:19 in order for him to be elevated.
  • 16:22 I mention this and I affirm this and that is, many in ministry
  • 16:25 today, leaders, we get degrees.
  • 16:28 I have a doctorate.
  • 16:29 I've been a professor for years and I'm all about helping to
  • 16:32 prepare people to learn the Scriptures and be a minister.
  • 16:35 But more than academic pedigree, for someone really to be
  • 16:39 a leader, there has to be something of the divine,
  • 16:42 the hand of God on their life somehow, and that has to be
  • 16:46 manifest to others that they're gonna be inclined to follow.
  • 16:51 And I mention that here because the crossing of the Jordan, they
  • 16:56 could have just built some kind of embankment downstream and
  • 16:59 closed it off and marched, but they needed to see that there
  • 17:04 was heaven's help on the other side of the river.
  • 17:07 I mention that.
  • 17:09 If you look at those soldiers, the numbering of them is over
  • 17:11 600,000 and the various cities that they went into,
  • 17:17 in the city of Canaan, in the land of Canaan,
  • 17:20 the first city was Jericho, these walled cities,
  • 17:23 they were small towns.
  • 17:24 They weren't enormous metroplexes.
  • 17:26 An enormous army could overcome them but inasmuch as you wanted
  • 17:30 to see some kind of miracle here at the Jordan, similarly,
  • 17:34 according to the text, when they made their way to the first city
  • 17:38 and we'll get to this in another program, the walls came down.
  • 17:41 That is to say, there's a miracle.
  • 17:43 That is to say, there's the hand of God in the enterprise.
  • 17:47 To be sure, those men still had to do what men do.
  • 17:50 They had to get there and fight and work and take care
  • 17:52 of their business.
  • 17:54 Similarly, today, you know, men, we have to get up.
  • 17:56 If we're gonna be more than a conqueror,
  • 17:58 we've gotta take care of business.
  • 18:00 A good work ethic, some courage, you know, chazak,
  • 18:02 be strong.
  • 18:04 I mean, that's necessary.
  • 18:05 That's not gonna go away just because you have religion.
  • 18:08 But what you want is to see God's hand at work in your
  • 18:12 business when you're involved in the Lord's business.
  • 18:15 And so, this journey here with Joshua is punctuated
  • 18:19 by miracles on the front end.
  • 18:21 And then he goes on to say, in verse 7, you know, that
  • 18:25 "as I was with Moses, I'll be with you."
  • 18:27 In other words, there was miracle with Moses at the
  • 18:29 parting, there's a miracle here.
  • 18:31 Same God, but it's a new, new, brand-new generation,
  • 18:36 and there's new work for the new generation.
  • 18:38 And what happens according to the text, the way this story
  • 18:41 plays out, the priests then bearing the Aron Kodesh,
  • 18:45 the ark of the covenant, they go down to the Jordan
  • 18:49 and they dip their feet in the river and the river stops.
  • 18:55 It is a miracle and we're told at the end of chapter 3 and
  • 19:00 verse 17 that "all Israel passed over on dry ground,
  • 19:08 until all the nation were passed clean over the Jordan."
  • 19:13 Again, what's noted in the Bible is a miracle.
  • 19:19 I believe in miracles.
  • 19:21 As I've stressed, I think it takes miracles.
  • 19:23 God does miracles to break forth his kingdom into the world,
  • 19:28 to show that it is the Lord of hosts who's the advanced person
  • 19:33 in the enterprise, that he's spreading his kingdom,
  • 19:35 that his kingdom may come and that his will will be done
  • 19:39 on earth as it is in heaven.
  • 19:41 People are interested in eschatology, when is the world
  • 19:44 gonna all come under God's domain,
  • 19:46 and that'll happen in its own time.
  • 19:48 But we need to claim it in our own world right now.
  • 19:51 That is to say, within our respective spheres of influence.
  • 19:56 I'm talking to men.
  • 19:57 Not just men, women too, but principally, men,
  • 20:00 for you to be that man of courage, for you to be the one,
  • 20:05 the priest of the family.
  • 20:07 For you to go first in the water, for you to get up early
  • 20:09 in the morning and you let that faith drive you into the future

  • 20:15 You know, men, we want the best in life,
  • 20:16 we feel we don't always get it.
  • 20:18 We think we--we go for an ideal, we think we got a raw deal.
  • 20:21 Get that faith at work and seek the Lord for what he would have
  • 20:25 you to do and find the divine strategy he has for you to help
  • 20:29 you to be the head and not the tail, to be a conqueror and not
  • 20:33 conquered, to be a victor and not a victim, and you yourself
  • 20:38 can experience with God how, like Joshua, you can be more

  • 20:45 Jeffrey: For the Israeli Defense Forces, the saying,
  • 20:48 "More than conquerors" is more than a slogan.
  • 20:53 My good friend, Chaim Malespin, who serves with the Israeli
  • 20:56 Defense Forces, is gonna give us a window into how the Israeli
  • 20:59 Army is taught to go forth and slay the giants.
  • 21:05 Jeffrey: Sarge, I got a question for you.
  • 21:07 When I look at the Israeli Defense Forces back in the day
  • 21:10 with Moses and after Moses with Joshua leading 'em in,
  • 21:14 the religious go first.
  • 21:16 You know, they're bearing the ark, they're putting their foot
  • 21:17 in the water, there's miracle there.
  • 21:19 How does the religious work along with
  • 21:21 the Israeli Defense Forces today?
  • 21:24 Chaim Malespin: Well, definitely when your life is
  • 21:26 threatened, when you're about to go into enemy territory,
  • 21:28 you wanna pray.
  • 21:30 Even someone who's a complete atheist, doesn't believe in God
  • 21:32 at all, this happened to me.
  • 21:34 Someone came to me and said, "Chaim, would you say a prayer?
  • 21:35 You and God have got this thing going.
  • 21:37 Would you just say a prayer that I'll make it out alive?"
  • 21:39 And you had this ten minutes to call your family,
  • 21:41 you don't give away any secrets, of course.
  • 21:43 And you just say, "Hey, I just wanna hear your voice,
  • 21:44 you know."
  • 21:46 Hang up, then the Rabbi will come out and he says, "Guys,
  • 21:48 I wanna pray a prayer over you guys."
  • 21:50 And many of these people, they say--I said,
  • 21:52 "Only now, you wanna have a prayer?
  • 21:54 What about other times?"
  • 21:56 And they said, "I'm just curious today.
  • 21:57 I'm extra curious about God today,"
  • 21:59 'cause knowing that that evening we'd go into some
  • 22:02 very heavy machine-gun fire and very dangerous missions.
  • 22:05 Jeffrey: Yeah, there's something about being thrown up
  • 22:07 to the edge of eternity that gives people a little religion
  • 22:09 that wouldn't otherwise be there.
  • 22:12 People talk about miracles and just the exploits
  • 22:15 of the Israeli Defense Forces.
  • 22:17 I know people talk about it in America.
  • 22:19 Do Israeli soldiers talk about miracles and God being with them
  • 22:23 when they're there in the thick of the battle?
  • 22:25 Chaim: Well, absolutely.
  • 22:27 You know, right around here, the sun stood still for Joshua
  • 22:29 and even today, I mean, I was under heavy ammunition fire
  • 22:32 and we were out and caught in the open.
  • 22:35 That's the worst place to be.
  • 22:37 Under fire in the southern part of Israel, and bullets, I could
  • 22:39 hear them whizzing by my head, whoo, whoo, and I thought,
  • 22:43 "For sure, I'm gonna die."
  • 22:44 I ran and dove behind this thing.
  • 22:46 And later, when I processed this and I returned fire, and we
  • 22:50 secured the situation in the perimeter, set up a perimeter,
  • 22:52 but I asked myself, "How did I survive?
  • 22:54 If a machine gun is firing at your entire company and none of
