  • 01:31 Zola's teaching on that from old Jerusalem.
  • 01:34 Let's go there right now.
  • 01:36 Zola Levitt: Well, we came to Jerusalem, the old Jerusalem,
  • 01:39 the Jerusalem we have now to talk to you about the period in
  • 01:42 which we're gonna have a new Jerusalem,
  • 01:44 the period called eternity, the period I think of as--
  • 01:48 with the three words from Revelation, "No more tears."
  • 01:53 The final period of prophecy, and so it's our final teaching
  • 01:56 program in this series about the future of the believers.
  • 01:59 Now, somebody trying to describe eternity would be stuck
  • 02:03 to the Scripture.
  • 02:05 I mean, there's no other description of it anywhere
  • 02:07 and it's a little bit hard to understand, so in this program
  • 02:10 I'm going to refer quite a bit to the Scriptures.
  • 02:14 And well, we do right along, but especially we're dependent
  • 02:18 on them to describe a period that seems
  • 02:20 to have no correspondence to the world that we live in.
  • 02:23 Well, if we could start with the beautiful verses
  • 02:26 of Revelation 21:10-12,
  • 02:29 "And he carried me away in the spirit to a great
  • 02:31 and high mountain, and he showed me that great city, the holy
  • 02:34 Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the
  • 02:38 glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious,
  • 02:42 even a jasper stone, clear as crystal."
  • 02:45 There's an expression that originates in the Scripture,
  • 02:49 clear as crystal.
  • 02:50 "And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates,
  • 02:53 and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon,
  • 02:56 which are the names of the twelve tribes
  • 02:58 of the children of Israel."
  • 03:00 Now, this amazing period, and it's the one, of course,
  • 03:04 after the kingdom, the last period,
  • 03:07 could be compared to our world.
  • 03:10 Some theologians have called our world the probationary world,
  • 03:13 and the coming world, the eternal world,
  • 03:17 and they are quite different.
  • 03:19 In the probationary world, there's a division of light
  • 03:21 and darkness, day and night as we know them,
  • 03:24 but in the eternal world there'll be no night.
  • 03:27 We're gonna cover these things from the Scriptures.
  • 03:29 There's a division of land and sea in our world
  • 03:31 and no more sea in the eternal world.
  • 03:35 We are under the rule of the sun and the moon, so to speak,
  • 03:38 as we live our lives, but there will be no need of the sun
  • 03:41 or the moon in eternity.
  • 03:43 Man began in a prepared garden in the probationary world
  • 03:47 and he'll be in a prepared city, the new Jerusalem,
  • 03:50 in the coming world.
  • 03:53 A river flowed out of the Garden of Eden in the old world
  • 03:56 and a river will flow from God's throne in eternity.
  • 04:00 The things I'm saying about eternity are
  • 04:02 right out of the Scriptures.
  • 04:04 There was a tree of life in the Garden of Eden, if you remember,
  • 04:07 and there will be a tree of life throughout the city in eternity.
  • 04:12 The first heavens and earth were finished in Genesis 2;
  • 04:16 new heavens and earth forever in Revelation 21.
  • 04:20 And finally, man himself made in God's image in the probationary
  • 04:25 world and in God's presence in the eternal world.
  • 04:32 The Psalm 145:13 tells of God's conception of time.
  • 04:37 When we talk eternity, we're really talking about time.
  • 04:42 And it says, "Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
  • 04:45 and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations."
  • 04:49 God's time is different than ours.
  • 04:51 2 Peter 3:8-10, "But beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing,
  • 04:56 that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years,
  • 04:59 and a thousand years as one day.
  • 05:01 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise,
  • 05:04 as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering
  • 05:06 to us-ward, not willing that any should perish,
  • 05:09 but that all should come to repentance.
  • 05:12 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in
  • 05:14 the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise,
  • 05:17 and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also
  • 05:21 and the works that are therein shall be burned up."
  • 05:26 It's quite a change from even the kingdom is the earth
  • 05:28 that we know.
  • 05:30 It has seas, it has the animals, it has people as we know people.
  • 05:34 But eternity is so different, so I'll describe it from Scripture
  • 05:39 and try to make a picture.
  • 05:42 The theologians call the world we're in now the cursed world,
  • 05:45 since God cursed the ground in the Garden of Eden,
  • 05:48 and there is the redeemed world in eternity, no more curse.
  • 05:52 The cursed world has daily sorrow, I don't have to
  • 05:55 tell you; there's no more sorrow in eternity.
  • 05:59 We return to the dust in the cursed world;
  • 06:01 there's no death in eternity.
  • 06:04 Satan opposes this cursed world; Satan is banished in eternity.
  • 06:10 We are kept from the tree of life in the cursed world,
  • 06:14 but we have free access to that tree of life
  • 06:17 in the redeemed world.
  • 06:19 The Redeemer was promised in the cursed world.
  • 06:22 He finally came, but the redemption is completely
  • 06:24 accomplished in the eternal world.
  • 06:27 The cursed world has evil in it continually,
  • 06:29 even in the kingdom, and nothing that defileth in eternity.
  • 06:35 And cherubim are guarding this cursed world,
  • 06:38 but angels are inviting in the eternal world.
  • 06:42 So, it's a time of so many changes.
  • 06:47 Psalm 102:25 says, "Of old hast thou laid the foundation
  • 06:51 of the earth: and the heavens are the world of thy hands.
  • 06:53 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea,
  • 06:56 all of them shall wax old like a garment;
  • 06:59 as a vesture shalt thou change them."
  • 07:02 God will change the world like someone changes his vesture,
  • 07:05 his garments, his clothing.
  • 07:08 "But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
  • 07:12 The children of thy servants shall continue,
  • 07:14 and their seed shall be established before thee."
  • 07:17 That was Psalm 102:25-28.
  • 07:20 You know, Revelation 21:1-7 is the beginning
  • 07:25 of the Bible's description of eternity.
  • 07:27 It's right after the great white throne of judgment,
  • 07:30 which we talked about in our last program,
  • 07:32 and it starts this way.
  • 07:34 "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven
  • 07:38 and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
  • 07:42 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from
  • 07:47 God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband."
  • 07:51 We had no idea where to go to shoot the new Jerusalem.
  • 07:53 We went to this dramatic setting in the old Jerusalem
  • 07:57 where you see the Tower of David and the beautiful city wall.
  • 08:02 The new Jerusalem's gonna have some high walls,
  • 08:04 but when I tell you how high, you're gonna see these
  • 08:06 are nothing in comparison.
  • 08:08 You know, evangelists were talking once about eternity and
  • 08:12 one said, "You know, we work so hard trying to convince people
  • 08:15 of eternal life but some of them don't even receive it.
  • 08:21 Nobody thanks us.
  • 08:23 We're not paid very much to tell the truth,
  • 08:25 and yet we're giving these people eternal life."
  • 08:29 And another evangelist said,
  • 08:31 "No, actually they have eternal life.
  • 08:34 What we're giving them is location."
  • 08:37 The story illustrates that every soul that was ever conscious
  • 08:40 is conscious forever.
  • 08:43 It's not a question of you don't go to eternity
  • 08:46 or don't go to the kingdom.
  • 08:48 After the judgment of the great white throne,
  • 08:50 you are still in eternity.
  • 08:52 But you're not with God if you are an unbeliever
  • 08:54 and you are with God if you are believer,
  • 08:56 and what a difference that makes.
  • 08:59 In eternity, there'll be no temple.
  • 09:01 Revelation 21:22 says, "And I saw no temple therein:
  • 09:05 for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it."
  • 09:10 That's interesting because, you see, in this present world,
  • 09:14 the temple of God was the place where the people approached God.
  • 09:17 I mean, he met the high priest there on the day of atonement
  • 09:20 and accepted the blood at the mercy seat.
  • 09:23 That was the purpose of the temple.
  • 09:25 Then in the 1,000 year kingdom, another temple was built,
  • 09:29 the millennial temple, a splendid house of worship
  • 09:32 where the Messiah was King and preached
  • 09:36 and people came to see Jesus.
  • 09:38 They stood there and saw him and heard him in that temple.
  • 09:42 But now in eternity, you see, the temple was a place
  • 09:47 where people met God.
  • 09:49 That is, the original tabernacle when it was built
  • 09:54 was built so God could dwell among his people.
  • 09:57 Now they don't have to go to a special place to meet God.
  • 10:00 There is no temple because it says God and the Lamb,
  • 10:04 in other words, God and his Son, are the temple.
  • 10:06 You don't have to go to an intermediate place
  • 10:09 where they are because we are all one.
  • 10:12 We are with them all the time.
  • 10:15 And as to the light and how it's lit, it's interesting.
  • 10:18 Revelation 22:5, "And there shall be no night there;
  • 10:22 and they need no candle, nor light of the sun;
  • 10:25 for the Lord God giveth them light:
  • 10:27 and they shall reign for ever and ever."
  • 10:30 Somehow God lights everything.
  • 10:32 And you know, all the light, the glory and brilliance
  • 10:37 of an illuminated universe, was once stored inside one baby
  • 10:45 when God became incarnate.
  • 10:48 Imagine that. Back after this.

  • 11:51 Zola: Well, Jerusalem as it now stands is very impressive,
  • 11:54 and let me say a few things about the new Jerusalem
  • 11:57 out of the Scriptures.
  • 11:59 Psalm 132:13-14 says, "For the Lord hath chosen Zion;
  • 12:04 he hath desired it for his habitation.
  • 12:06 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell;
  • 12:09 for I have desired it."
  • 12:12 Zion is a word for Jerusalem.
  • 12:14 The Prophet Joel said, "Call out the name of the Lord
  • 12:17 on Mount Zion, you'll be saved," and so on.
  • 12:21 Isaiah 65:17-18, "For, behold, I create new heavens
  • 12:25 and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered,
  • 12:27 nor come into mind.
  • 12:29 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create:
  • 12:33 for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing,
  • 12:36 and her people a joy."
  • 12:38 And in Hebrews 12:22, " But ye are come unto mount Zion,
  • 12:43 and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
  • 12:46 and to an innumerable company of angels."
  • 12:50 Now, the place is going to be absolutely stupendous.
  • 12:53 I don't know how else to describe it.
  • 12:55 Nearly 2 million square miles.
  • 12:59 The city, it says in Revelation 21:16-17,
  • 13:03 "And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large
  • 13:06 as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed,
  • 13:09 twelve thousand furlongs.
  • 13:11 The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
  • 13:14 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty
  • 13:17 and four cubits, according to the measure of a man,
  • 13:19 that is, of the angel."
  • 13:21 Now, I deciphered all that and made some calculations.
  • 13:24 The place will be 2 million square miles.
  • 13:28 And if you laid it on the eastern United States, it would
  • 13:31 reach from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River,
  • 13:36 from the border with Canada to the Gulf of Mexico,
  • 13:40 and it would be 1,5000 miles high, okay?
  • 13:44 Miles, not feet high.
  • 13:47 This is some city, I can tell you, room for all the souls
  • 13:52 of all time who were believers.
  • 13:54 And I'm talking about from Adam, right on through
  • 13:57 the Old Testament times, the church age,
  • 14:00 the tribulation, the kingdom.
  • 14:02 Many people are saved in the kingdom.
  • 14:04 You know, we talked about that.
  • 14:06 And now in eternity, all of those believers are together
  • 14:09 with God and the Lamb in this stupendous new Jerusalem.
  • 14:16 The tree of life is there of course.
  • 14:18 Revelation 2:7 says, "He that hath an ear,
  • 14:21 let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches,"
  • 14:23 and this is the Lord commenting in Revelation.
  • 14:27 In the beginning of Revelation, you know, chapters 2 and 3
  • 14:30 are addressed to the churches of the time.
  • 14:33 And it says, "To him that overcometh will I give to eat
  • 14:35 of the tree of life, which is in the midst
  • 14:38 of the paradise of God."
  • 14:39 So, the tree of life back from the Garden of Eden
  • 14:42 will return and it will be remarkable.
  • 14:46 Revelation 22:2-3 says, "In the midst of the street of it,
  • 14:50 and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life,
  • 14:54 which bare twelve manners of fruits,
  • 14:56 and yielded her fruit every month."
  • 14:59 This was a remarkable tree.
  • 15:01 "And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
  • 15:04 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God
  • 15:08 and of the Lamb shall be in it;
  • 15:10 and his servants shall serve him."
  • 15:13 So, the relationship with the Lord in the kingdom
  • 15:16 is an intimate relationship.
  • 15:19 We'll know him face to face as it were.
  • 15:22 We'll have the realization of 1 Corinthians 13:12,
  • 15:26 "For now we see through a glass, darkly;
  • 15:28 but then face to face: now I know in part;
  • 15:32 but then shall I know even as also I am known."
  • 15:37 And in 1 John 3:2, "Beloved, now we are the sons of God,
  • 15:41 and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know
  • 15:45 that when he shall appear, we shall be like him;
  • 15:48 for we shall see him as he is."
  • 15:51 One of the pleasures, one of the mysteries of this time
  • 15:55 and the pleasures of eternity is that now we really
  • 15:57 can't picture God.
  • 16:00 Recently, people made a face of Jesus.
  • 16:03 You might have seen this on TV, some kind of a swarthy,
  • 16:07 Israeli looking face.
  • 16:09 And it was believable as Jesus, I suppose,
  • 16:11 but we really don't know.
  • 16:12 We just haven't seen him.
  • 16:14 You know, Rebecca also married a bridegroom she didn't see
  • 16:17 first when she went to marry Isaac.
  • 16:20 That story, you know, the servant showed her the gifts he
  • 16:23 sent, and she was wooed and won and went off to marry him.
  • 16:27 And the church is in the same position.
  • 16:28 The Holy Spirit shows us the gifts and we're willing to go
  • 16:30 off and marry the Lord, but we have not seen his face.
  • 16:35 And one of the pleasures of eternity will be that we will
  • 16:37 see the Lord, and his Father, God Almighty,
  • 16:42 and we'll see 'em with our eyes.
  • 16:44 We'll see what they look like and they'll see us face to face.
  • 16:48 A remarkable time.
  • 16:50 Now, what about the temple?
  • 16:52 In Revelation 21:3, "I heard a great voice out of heaven
  • 16:55 saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,
  • 16:58 and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people,
  • 17:01 and God himself shall be with them, and be their God."
  • 17:05 The tabernacle in particular we remark before God.
  • 17:09 Told them when they made the tabernacle in Exodus 25:8-10
  • 17:13 to gather materials and to build a house where he could dwell
  • 17:17 among his people.
  • 17:18 Well, now it is fully realized. They built the tabernacle.
  • 17:21 They carried it through the wilderness.
  • 17:23 They took the artifacts into Shiloh and finally Jerusalem.
  • 17:27 They built the two great temples of God on the Temple Mount.
  • 17:31 And in the tribulation, we'll rebuild the temple again.
  • 17:36 And finally in the kingdom, in the millennial reign,
  • 17:39 the Lord's temple will appear still again, a fourth temple.
  • 17:43 But in this city, there is no temple, but the tabernacle of
  • 17:47 God, that simple tent from the wilderness will reappear
  • 17:51 and be with men and God will dwell among them.
  • 17:56 And Revelation 21:4 is one of my favorite verses.
  • 18:00 I started out saying this is the period of no more tears and here
  • 18:02 it says, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes;
  • 18:07 and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
  • 18:10 crying, neither shall there be any more pain:
  • 18:14 for the former things are passed away."
  • 18:18 That's simply great news.
  • 18:20 Revelation 21:26-27, "And they shall bring the glory
  • 18:24 and honor of the nations into it.
  • 18:26 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth,
  • 18:30 neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie:
  • 18:34 but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life."
  • 18:37 Won't that be refreshing? No more lies.
  • 18:39 Everybody tells the truth in eternity.
  • 18:41 Ecclesiastes 3:11 puts it this way, "He hath made every thing
  • 18:44 beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their
  • 18:48 heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh
  • 18:52 from the beginning to the end."
  • 18:54 Now, life in the eternal city, it has certain characteristics.
  • 18:59 It's a life of fellowship with him.
  • 19:01 It's a life of rest. It's a life full of knowledge.
  • 19:05 It's a life of holiness. It's a life of joy.
  • 19:09 It's a life of service. It's a life of abundance.
  • 19:13 It's a life of glory. It's a life of worship.
  • 19:18 Revelation 19:1, "After this I heard what sounded like
  • 19:21 the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: 'Hallelujah!
  • 19:25 Salvation and glory and power belong to our God!'"
  • 19:28 So, worship right at the end will certainly be
  • 19:31 a feature of eternity.
  • 19:34 No wonder John ended his book of Revelation, and we pray
  • 19:39 with him, the last verses of the Bible, Revelation 22:20-21 say,
  • 19:46 "He which testifieth these things saith,
  • 19:49 Surely I come quickly, amen?
  • 19:52 Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
  • 19:54 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
